Re: Anyone upgrade a T420 from 8 GB to 12 GB of RAM?

I believe your assumptions of it not being helpful to be correct. I run 16gb in mine (just to have it maxed out and never have to wonder) but have not seen a boost in performance. If your cpu is maxed out you could put that money toward a better processor since they’re socketed in the T420 machines.

Re: New IPS FHD Upgrade Kit for thinkpad T420 T430 ,And T430S T420S

I bought one. Works pretty well. I have noticed a little flicker occasionally on startup, but works flawlessly after a minute or two. I’ve been using it regularly for the last 6-8 weeks or so. I’ve been happy with it and have found it to be worth it. The hardest part was finding an authentic AUO...1...

Re: USB-C in t420/t430

Depending on whether you use your CD/DVD drive, you could remove it and replace it with a modified hard drive adapter fitted with a USB c hub and run the wire over from that adapter card. As long as you find the right hub, you'd be set. Could 3d print any necessary mounting parts if you needed somet...

Re: Reserve edition teardown?

Thanks! Someone on Reddit posted a link to the HMM for the reserve edition. Much of the information needed is in it. Obviously, I'll need to experiment a bit, but there's potential.

Reserve edition teardown?

I'm interested in the special leather casing. I'd like to make my own for my T420 (and perhaps others), but I'd like to see how the reserve edition's case is attached. Clips, screws, glue? Does anyone own one and if so, would you be willing to share photos of how it attaches? I've been wanting to do...

Re: Flashed Coreboot now T420 won't power on

I have since received a motherboard I bought on eBay and have successfully flashed a coreboot Rom I compiled myself. As for the original motherboard, iirc I compiled coreboot, but used files I found online (couldn't tell you which one at this point). I was attempting to boot from an SSD I had in the...

Re: Flashed Coreboot now T420 won't power on

I was unaware that Coreboot could be flashed on anything later than a T500. Maybe I'm thinking of Libreboot. Libreboot is limited to the older systems. Coreboot does in fact support the T420. Is the behavior any different with AC in and battery out? The laptop is almost completely disassembled on m...

Flashed Coreboot now T420 won't power on

I flashed Coreboot to my T420. When I plug in the AC adapter, the power button lights up for a second or two, then turns off. After I press the power button it lights up for another second or two and turns off. The fan does not spin or twitch, there are no beeps, no output to LCD, or any other signs...

Re: My T500 finally died. What do I replace it with?

I ended up going with a T420 I found on eBay for ~$130. i5-2520M, 6gb RAM, Intel GPU, 1600x900 LCD, and I think it had a 160gb HD i swapped for the 64gb SSD I had in my T500. I couldn't be much happier. Overall the unit is in good condition (in fact, better than I thought). Keyboard has some shine, ...

My T500 finally died. What do I replace it with?

My T500, which I've had for about 8 years finally died. I loved that machine. I don't intend to repair it as I'm sure it's the motherboard that went. I'll probably do a little troubleshooting, but I've been looking to upgrade anyway. I'm pretty sure I'd be looking at either a T420 or T/W520, but any...

X60t Volume Buttons Ubuntu 12.10

My X60t running Ubuntu 12.10 (Kernel 3.5.0-46-generic) volume buttons work. They change the volume, but not the master volume you'd find under the volume icon in the taskbar. I open alsamixer under a console and none of the volume controls change when I press any of the buttons. However, after hitti...

Thanks George! I guess I'm just double-checking to make sure it wasn't a replaced panel from a W500 or some other type of anomaly. I'm probably just being overly cautious.

Re: Stylus options / preferences / issues?

I cannot speak of a full disassembly, but as with several Wacom stylii, you can take a super-small flathead screwdriver and pry off the side button. Underneath, you will find two screws, one for adjusting pressure sensitivity of each end of the stylus. This same thing works for the stylus to my Gala...

I've been using my T500 (with a solid t6x keyboard) now for nearly three years and have only a light shine on a few keys. I'm curious to see how fast/slow others' keyboards have become "polished".

W701ds - I don't say that lightly either, I'd love to have a Wacom digitizer built in, and the second screen seems like it would work quite nicely for all my GIMP dockable dialogs - freeing up valuable real estate on the main WUXGA panel. ...Drools....
