Will this work?

After replacing the old hard drive with this, can I just directly boot to a Windows XP install cd and then format and install the operating system?

The BIOS and other system stuff is separate from the hard drive, right?

Thanks.

After reading some other threads, it seems like the gray thing between the CPU and fan is actually a rubber thermal pad. Could I replace this with something like Arctic Silver 5? Or would I have to apply thermal grease on top of this? As I said in my last post, there is a small crack in one corner. ...

Update: So I figured out how to remove the keyboard and the fan. On the end of the fan that contacts the cpu, there is still a thin gray layer of thermal grease, but it's cracked on one side. Is this regular thermal grease? Anyone know how to reapply it? I'm probably going to clean everything with c...

So now I have the keyboard open, but I can't seem to flip it back very far. I can see the two ribbon cables I need to remove (p.45 on the HMM), but I can't get the opening big enough to reach them.

Any ideas on how to flip the keyboard out more?

Thanks.

WTB: 600x cpu cooling fan

Hi, I'm looking for a good condition and quiet replacement CPU cooling fan for the Thinkpad 600x. My current fan has a loud, humming noise. My 600x is the 2645-9WU model, so I'll be looking for the P/N 08K5909 fan (the 2645-5Fx and -9Fx use a different fan). Please PM or post with any offers. Thanks.

Thanks for the PM. Just replied. Also, I just had a few questions.

Are these batteries IBM brand? Is there a part number?
Do you have any references (Ebay, heatware, beerology, etc.)?

Thanks!

How do you remove the covers over the screws? Do you use a small flathead screwdriver to pry it out? Is it possible to put them back in? Thanks.

Yes, that is indeed 'cat's tongue'.
Thanks.

Thanks. It's a 2645-9WU, so I'll be looking for the 08K5909 fan. Installation doesn't seem too bad. From the HMM, it looks like the fan just has 2 screws to connect to the CPU, 2 screws to the main board, and a power cable.

edit: do you flip the keyboard up to get access to the CPU?

Loud, whining fan on 600x?

Just picked up a 600x from Ebay. Everything works great but the fan towards the back of the left side has a loud whining sound.

Is there some way to fix this? I guess it's not too bad as long as it's not a sign of a bigger problem. Thanks!

By microphone, do you mean the audio-in? So the audio-out port
still works?

Also, what do you mean by play on the display?

Thanks.

Those error numbers (should be 161, not 162) are indicative of a loss of power in the backup battery to the motherboard. The system is telling you that the date and time needs to be reset. In order to do that, you must be able to access the BIOS (by pressing F1 at power on). If the password is prot...

Where is the blemish on the screen? I can't really see it in the picture.

Is this laptop basically a more portable version of the 600x?

Thanks.
