Note that dvd drives can become defective in a way where only the dvd portion of the drive fails while the cd portion still works.
Happened to a dvd-rw drive of mine not long ago.

Re: Extracting preloaded software from a recovery Iso

In the old OS/2 days, IBM created two DOS programs (LOADDSKF.EXE/SAVEDSKF.EXE) to copy diskette images to diskette and back. Using file extension .dsk

I believe they are available from the old IBM pccbbs.

I think that the format is raw - that is - sector by sector from the floppy disk.

Re: T61 fan error + 3 beeps. How to fix it?

Many years ago I had a car. Then one day the speedometer stopped showing the speed of the car. It just showed 0 kilometers per hour all the time, even when the car was moving. It turned out to be the rotation sensor that was broken. Just an easily replaceable piece screewed into the motor. To me, it...

It could be the classic "coffee in the keyboard" case.
Take a look at the backside of the keyboard - look for signs of dryed out coffee or similar.

You will have to remove the mainboard to get to it.

When chips that are designed to operate from more than one supply voltage, is operated with one or more, but not all supply voltages present, then it is normal behaviour that they can get warm. There are chip, where a specific combination of supply voltages present/not present will damage the chip, ...

Re: Fan error on A31

Actualy, with A30, A30P, A31 and A31P it doesn't have to be the fan. These models has a screw hole where there is a high risk of putting a long screw into a short hole - and doing so will cause a fan error. If the problem first occurred right after the machine had been opened, it is most likely the ...

If not, then you may want to try that. You can get it from IBM/Lenovo.

Re: Where is the fuse for LCD on a T20?

On a T20, the fuse for backlight is F4. It is located on the bottom side of the board - just below the lcd connector.
Generally, you can find the value of a fuse, by looking at it's top marking.
In case of F4 it should have an 'N' as top marking, which means it's value should be 2A.

Re: T42 shows it's on battery when AC adapter plugged in

The output of the mentioned op-amp ends up on the TB62501F pin 2, where you can measure it.
I beleive that, 0 V on TB62501F pin 2 means that current is being drawn from the AC Adapter and 3.3 V means that no current is being drawn from the AC Adapter.

Re: T41 LCD inverter problems

Given the high number of components sitting between the 3.3V and ground, it can be very difficult to find a short there. The only way of doing - that I know of - is to unsolder all possible components one by one. It can be a chip that has shorted, but it doesn't have to be so. There is also a lot a ...

Re: T41 LCD inverter problems

There are 3 supply voltages going to the LCD assembly. They are all going through a fuse. That is F3, F7 and F8. Since you do see the IBM logo the F3 fuse (3.3V) will have to be fine. Also, if the power led lights up, then the F8 fuse (3.3V) will have to be fine. This leaves only the F7 fuse, and ye...

1. Try to swap the palmrest with the palmrest of another t43. See if the error goes with the touchpad or the motherboard. If the error is with the motherboard, then check fuse F15, located on the top side of the board, close to the touchpad connector. 2. Try putting your fingers on the 2 power induc...

Basically, the audio circuitry in a t41 consists of 2 chips. These are the SoundMax Codec chip (AD1981B) and the Audio Amplifier chip (AN12942A). Audio comming from Windows (eg. .wav files) must go through the Codec chip to be converted from digital to analog audio signals which is then routed to th...

Steve When an area of the board is getting warm then that can only mean that some energy is being wasted. Some of the fuse numbers aren't used. The point between the 2 mentioned TPC8014 chips are the system DC. Voltage will come to this point from either the AC Adapter through one of the two mosfets or from the battery through the other mosfet. If you start your fault finding at the DC in jack and goes ...
