Indeed I checked in my bios (a brand new x61s) and I see that AHCI is in grey, and grey usually means "not available". Maybe it is not the case in the computer language ?

Battery life I haven't tested battery to the max, but my best guess is a little over 5 hours in Windows Vista with Aero turned off and a dim screen.
