Windows 7 SP1 install error 0x800F0A12

Word of warning regarding the above error. I've now installed SP1 on both my T60 and T30. SP1 installed flawlessly in 30 minutes on the T60 but the above error was encountered on the T30. Both machines had retail Windows 7 Professional installed and were fully patched prior to the availability of SP...

Re: Thinkpad Rescue & Recovery: Pros and Cons?

Last version I tried to use was 4.21 which was still far too slow.

I would recommend using either Acronis or Paragon (which I use).
Furthermore, Windows Backup in Windows 7 is improved and I now use that as well for making regular system images of my C: (OS only) partition.

Re: T60 for T400?

I certainly could never justify spending that kind of money if my T60 was slow, which by the way, it isn't :D You need to do some proper troubleshooting on which processes are running slow and why, CPU constraint, memory etc. ? Failing that and after any other cleaning up attempts why not try a clea...

Please be aware that for Windows 7 Ultimate, mainstream support will cease on the 13th January 2015 and there is NO extended support. See here for the lifecyle details, http://support.microsoft.com/lifecycle/?p1=14498 Only Windows 7 Enterprise and Professional have extended support until 14th Januar...

Re: Windows 7 64 bit -- Is it a no brainer on a Core 2 Duo?

By investing in a 64-bit capable machine you have, as you rightly infer, already made your decision. There is no additional software cost in adopting 64-bit Windows 7 rather than 32-bit. The aditional RAM you mention may not be required but its relative cost is minimal. If you have 32-bit applicatio...

Really?! I had read here that the ATI Mobility 7500 really struggles with Windows 7 Works fine here. All my machines that run Windows 7 do not use Aero and indeed are made to look like Windows 2K/XP. There are no W7 drivers for the ATI 7500 but I use the XP drivers and they will work perfectly well...

Sorry, missed this thread when first raised ... I don't seem to get that behaviour at all. Explorer works pretty much as I would expect. I have amended some of the settings, so that may explain it. Settings as follows, Explorer > Tools > Folder Options > General Tab > Navigation Pane Show All Folder...

Re: T30 viability

My T30 is still going strong (touch wood) and running Windows 7 really well. I upgraded the RAM to 2GB and the disk to a WD Scorpio Blue 250GB. It's only really used as my hot spare to the desktop but runs better than when I had XP on it. It was a clean install of retail Windows 7 Professional, so n...

Re: Clean install Win7 x64

Agreed on a clean install. During the install process you will get the opportunity to partition the drive to your liking. I see no reason to have the ThinkPad recovery partition and have never used it on any of mine. Furthermore, Rescue & Recovery is far too slow to use as a backup tool. Windows 7 B...

Re: Specific questions about upgrade path for T60 with T2500

That's the idea. In fact the link regarding the TRIM command is part of a larger article about SSD's in general and it's worth a read. Windows XP also suffers from a problem related to Partition Alignment. In order to maximise performance of an SSD, the partition(s) need to be on particular boundari...

Re: Specific questions about upgrade path for T60 with T2500

I don't think the SSD Toolbox has any command line switches, so you couldn't schedule it and get it to run without manual intervention.

Here's a link to the Intel download, which includes a User Guide.

Re: Specific questions about upgrade path for T60 with T2500

It's to ensure the correct reuse of free space. Here's a good link for a description, http://www.anandtech.com/show/2738/10 As Windows XP does not support the TRIM command you need to do it manually. For the Intel SSD's, Intel provide via a download, a utility called the Intel SSD Toolbox. One of th...

Re: Specific questions about upgrade path for T60 with T2500

Please be aware that Windows XP does not support the TRIM command. Using an SSD without this support will lead to performance degradation over time. If you plan to install an SSD and use XP, you should get an SSD that provides the equivalent support directly, for example the Intel SSD's which includ...

Re: Win 7 64 Bit - SSD vs HDD

If you're asking about comparing XP and W7 on the same machine with the same HDD, then I've found W7 to be noticeably faster for boot/shutdown. Program loading seemed comparable with W7 being slightly faster.
This was on both a T60 and T30 with WD Scorpios (250GB black and blue respectively).

Re: Should I upgrade my T400 to Windows 7 from XP?

Another vote for Windows 7 here.
I put it on my old T30 and even though I had to use the XP graphics driver (ATI Radeon 7500) everything works fine. I have no need for aero (even on my desktop). Startup and shutdown is much quicker than XP and for me Jump Lists are a huge boon.

Re: Moving T61 from XP to Win 7 Pro with a new hard drive?

If you've already got a C: of 100GB and a D: of 100GB, you probably have only about 100GB left. It's the age old problem of disk manufacturers confusing decimal and hex for sizing. My 250GB drive only has 232GB of free space even when it's brand new and unformatted. A 320GB will have (roughly) 300GB...

Re: Moving T61 from XP to Win 7 Pro with a new hard drive?

The Windows 7 Upgrade setup is different from previous Windows Upgrade installs. You no longer get a prompt during the setup process to insert the CD of the previously eligible product, as you did for example with upgrading W2K to XP. It now looks for an activated version of an eligible product on t...

No problems. I used Windows Update to drag down all the required fixes and ThinkPad System Update to i...

Ah but that's the problem with the Commit figures ... Unless they've changed it (recently), commiting virtual storage does not mean that the storage is actually allocated on the pagefile. It indicates to the virtual storage manager that it's guaranteed to be backed (by a pagefile slot) at some point...
