The loud beep doesn't occur if the system is muted. If your system isn't muted, just mash the mute button on the keyboard as it's booting.

Re: Has anyone tried an SSD in the X41? *PICS*
Hey just an update, I'm currently using the Ubuntu 9.04 (Jaunty Jackalope?) pre-release formatted with ext4 on my compact flash card and it's much faster than ext3 was. Well, I suppose it could be 9.04 that's faster than 8.10, but either way performance is much improved. The latest Fedora installs a...

Re: X40/X41 motherboard compatibility
I would guess no due to the placement of the tablet hinge and the incompatibility of batteries. Maybe you could jury rig it though.

Well that's a shame. I never used the bluetooth much, but it wasn't completely unused like the fingerprint scanner. Oh well, maybe it'll still get some reception anyway.

Re: Has anyone tried an SSD in the X41? *PICS*
I'd just like to add that I enabled writeback mode for ext3 in ubuntu and it gave a big performance boost to my 32GB Transcend compactflash. It's no speed demon, but it at least has usable performance online now, rarely stuttering or freezing. (used to have to use Flashblock to disable all flash app...

Severed a gray wire to the X41T LCD...what's it for?
So for the longest time, I've had a very wobbly screen on my X41T, to the point where the tablet functionality was useless and I couldn't use the laptop in a moving vehicle. A year ago I sent it to some 3rd party (thinkpad authorized) repair place which told me they could repair it easily and cheapl...

Re: Did it!
The Y axis is the block size - you are correct that the HDD is faster writing at to about a 64k block size. Read and write. How often does HDD/CF need to write 64k or lower block size? Quite often I'd imagine. Using the system entails so many small changes, just saving settings, temp files, etc.

I am very worried about exceeding the maximum writes on my LExar 300x CF. I have the following quetsions: 1) With a write lock on the C: drive (the Lexar) which has all the OS files, about how long will the Lexar last/perform at full capacity. Assume daily usage. -Probably a while, reads are virtua...

It pauses a bit whenever something is loaded from disk, really. It's sluggish, but not unbearable. FAT32 performs better on these drives than NTFS, btw. Under Linux, I've found ReiserFS to work quite well. There's also the option to do a loop mount and store everything in RAM, sort of like a liveCD,...

Ok, more stuff: Using Windows 2000 and FAT32 Disksped.exe returns its maximum cached write performance with 8KB clusters. Perhaps the card has some optimization for this cluster size as its the default formatting the card ships with. Sisoft Sandra returns the maximum write performance using 32KB clu...

Not bad k0lo. Vista, even with the hampered disk speeds, was already performing better in use than 2000 did (without the altered registry settings at least), so that wouldn't be a bad way to make use of Vista's better responsiveness without having crippling speeds on compact flash cards. Still, inst...

The X40/X41 series, afaik, does not support SDHC. There are some non-SDHC 4GB sd cards, I have one, made by Transcend. Currently, it's formatted at FAT16 w/ max cluster size and in my Dell Axim x51v (FAT32 has horrible performance on the axim for some reason) I would stay away from Ridata, I had a R...

Well, I'm installing Ubuntu on a 32GB Transcend card now. Install is SLOOOWWW but not the slowest I've ever seen. Still, way slower than an install onto the default hard drive (which has completely died for me, forcing the switch, and I didn't feel the 16GB cards offered sufficient space). Updates a...

So there are now 32GB cards popping up, anyone try them? There's a Transcend 32GB card, and it's rated at up to 40MB read/ 16MB write, but I doubt actual speed is that high. I'd imagine speed is similar to the 16GB card, which I believe people had poor results with. There's also an updated version o...

The X40 has a SATA controller and uses a SATA-to-IDE bridge just like the X41. This is evident in Linux when viewing the X40's devices and mounts. Could you post that device and mount information, please? Accoring to specifications X40 uses Intel 82801DBM. It allows 2 IDE channels with 2 drives eac...

Btw, I just noticed that my results for cached reads are about twice what DVormann got in his tests. Has anyone been using a CF card for a main drive for more than a few months? I'm really tempted to try this out but am worried about the write cycle limitations and don't fully understand the worst case scenarios. Honestly, even anecdotal evidence wouldn't help much since everyone uses their drives...
