Re: A31p - a decade later (LONG)

Well, I fired up both the A31p and the X41 last nite. Good grief! If you let these things install all the *&$^%*& updates they've been missing since the last time they were fired up, the computer is basically unusable for 3-4 hrs. Why are there still updates to install? Are you really running 7 on ...

Yes, nice pic. It's like the proud momma holding up the baby! I could probably do one like that. I've still got the A31p and a non-tablet X41.

Re: new member w/ an a31p 2653

WIll do some research on those sponges now. One of IBM's less stellar moments. Not to mention that a NOS set of these - if you can find it to begin with - runs over $100... At one point, I tried shimming the sponges with strips of Aluminum glued to the Aluminum that presses against the sponges. Tha...

He's right, you know. Past 2.0, the inherent weakness of the cooling system will probably kill you. The cooling system depends, in part, on sponges. Yes, thermal sponges. Search the archive for "thermal sponges" and you'll see some tech info and a rant I posted a while back.

Re: A31p - a decade later (LONG)

I still have my A31p. It was part of a contract deal I took on when the company I was in went belly up in 2004. I really loved it back then. Later on, it was nice as a "backup" machine when some other laptop was in for repairs. I have an X41 to fill that need now. I do not use the A31p regularly. It...

The computers might gang up on you. I worry about earthquakes causing avalanches... I have a Televideo terminal for an Ohio Scientific C2-OEM box I have. Single sided 8" floppies. That was back when floppies were REAL floppy. You can play Adventure on that machine. (An angry dwarf throws a lit...

I have recycled some in the last year or so, but not enough! I can see 3 candidates from where I'm sitting. I acquired a Dell PE 1950 2x4 core server cheep. Added a drive and Ubuntu, and voila, in-house compute server. (Don't ask) I also have a real nice A31p I should try and sell, but haven'...

Thanks for finding that, but the link did not work. I think this is it: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/windows/desktop/aa366778#physical_memory_limits_windows_7 As mentioned above, I use a HP z800 with 48Gb at work, and it's not big enough for some designs. Re: Can Windows 7 run on a server box with a Xeon chip?

Here I go dredging up old topics again. :) From info gathered on another forum and confirmed on the MSFT website, it seems only some editions of W7 can address the amount of DRAM discussed here. From MSFT: "The 64-bit version of Windows 7 Ultimate, Enterprise, and Professional editions can all use u...

Re: Lenovo Thinkpad Support Website has moved...

Canceling the annoying pop-up does not get you to the old site, but "Use Quick Path" gets you to a box where you enter the model type. As long as I can still find things for a 2653-N5U (A31p), I'm OK with it. Annoying, but not felony stupid.

Re: If you've ≥5 computers, do you use them all or feel guilty?

Over the last year or so, I've recycled about 6 systems that were simply not worth saving. I have decided that anything in a short tower or a proprietary case is junk because a generic MB or modern CPU fan won't fit in it under the PS. That is, a modern CPU fan that doesn't whine like a 747. ...

BTW, you can get hand-tailored shirts or a complete business suit in Singapore much cheaper than elsewhere. That's one thing that's fairly widespread in Asia. I would have that fairly high on my agenda. To H*ll with electronics, find me a good tailor!

Hey, don't say that! I'm typing on one righ LOL! But seriously, because the graphics are integrated on the MB, (it's not a discrete video card), that is the Achilles heel of these machines. Another big limitation of this series is the USB ports are all 1.1. You can get USB 2.0 by adding a PCM...

Re: Thinkpad Stuff in Singapore? Need guidance!

I'm not so sure Singapore is a great place to buy tech items. Last time I was there (on business), the prices seemed rather inflated what with import duties, VAT (or whatever they call it locally), etc. Great looking stores, but frightening prices. :? I spent my spare weekend hours on Sentosa Island...

As for the lid close switch, on the motherboard the solder pads are indeed there. I wonder if I could solder the switch's pins here and have it work. Re: X41 tablet BIOS on non-tablet X41

I noticed that my X41 runs the LCD at 50hz (even with an IPS LCD from an X41 tablet) while the X41 tablet I had before ran its LCD at 60hz. For what I do it's imperative that my LCD is at 60hz. Since the video BIOS is in the main BIOS, would I have issues flashing the X41 tablet BIOS to an X41? If ...

Or this, also in Paris. Rendezvous by Claude LeLouch. Yes, it has been proven to be mostly cinematic magic, but still fun to watch.

As mentioned before in this thread, my Alfa is virtually identical to the one in The Day of the Jackal (1973) only mine sounds more bad-a**.

@goofyGAguy: Good choice. Very good choice. 8) Having heard a lot of race motors at the track, the Ford race motors have the prettiest sound, but the Chevy race motors sound more like race motors. The Bullitt car was a 390 CID ~325 BHP. Can-Am cars like the Lola were around 500 CID, 800 BHP in a car...
