Re: WTB: W700 GPU

I have a new one which I have been saving for a project, but why don't you get one off of eBay? I see both new and used ones there, specifically for Lenovo.

Re: Adjust Screen Contrast T60P

I'm not averse to doing the whole package if it installs a new driver (if needed) automatically and safely.

My current driver is 8.561.0.0 on the ATI V5200. Is there a link to download the appropriate package?

Re: Adjust Screen Contrast T60P

Can I download Catalyst without upgrading my present driver? Is there a download link for the correct version of Catalyst for the T60P? (Windows 7)

Thanks

Adjust Screen Contrast T60P

I have a T60P with the Boe Hydis UXGA screen and am wondering if there are controls for adjusting screen contrast. I went into advanced display settings, see a number of different profiles, and also went into color calibration. In the latter the on screen instructions tell you to check your manual t...

Re: W700 Reliability

Thanks for the clarification. It really didn't make any sense to me, as all windows files are formatted the same. All that's important to me are my documents and other store media. And, as you say, I can write to it and use it as storage.

Any opinion on USB enclosures?

Re: W700 Reliability

If I remove the hard drive from my T60P, which has windows seven installed, is it possible to put it into a USB enclosure and connect it to the HP 8740W? A friend of mine told me that the HP will not be able to read any of the files due to some peculiarity of the ThinkPad file structure. Is this true?

Re: W700 Reliability

My screen seems pretty darn uniform to. me…no color distortion, and whites seem pretty white. With regards to other screens, there are two considerations for me. First I don't believe that 4K is at all necessary and a screen of this size, and 16 x 10 seems more than just an aesthetic choice. 16 x 9 ...

Re: W700 Reliability

Money is tight, I want to put it to good use, and I really have bad memories of taking electronics apart, even if 7 year olds love doing so.

About the DC2 screen, all I can tell you is that it's the best laptop screen I've seen.

Re: W700 Reliability

Well wouldn't a simple fix of this machine be simply easier? T60/T60p boards are dirt cheap now :) Some people have a knack for avoiding the simplest solutions and finding creative explanations to why these solutions are not simple at all! Some people have a knack for not hearing other people...

Re: W700 Reliability

A friend from another forum cited an article from early 2018 wherein Intel said that after they patch processors of the last 5 years, that they will work on and release patches for all processors going back an additional five years. So the processors for the 8740W may indeed get their patches.

Re: W700 Reliability

Some old programs, the disks and installers for which are misplaced, would be lost. Also not all Documents are placed in "Documents" but are in several locations. I have backed up most all of them, but it would be great to migrate to a different machine with everything the same. What imaging program...

Re: W700 Reliability

Very cool. So the T60P and 8740W both have ATI GPUs, but wildly incompatible drivers? So you loaded the appropriate 8740W video driver, and everything seems normal so far?

You imaged rather than cloned?

Re: W700 Reliability

From what I know it's not the driver but the mechanism itself. Apparently Lenovo had (has) access to the best Trackpoint hardware due to an exclusive agreement. Other iterations of Trackpoint are somewhat lesser in quality. The Hp's version is heavier in action, and its associated buttons more awkwa...

Re: W700 Reliability

Your system will work perfectly fine for couple of extra years. It's still very future-proof. However, it has flaws (color distortion at the edges, poor backlit keyboard), but it is definitely the best system with 1200 horizontal lines available, and there is no argue. I like my 8770w better, but t...

Re: W700 Reliability

Being screen-centric, the 8740W DreamColor variant is a great machine for me, so obviously I want to protect it against Meltdown and Spectre. So what's the practical thing to do? I can take a try if you need it. Got both 8740w and T60p. I guess it shouldn't work, but may give a shot. W7 or W10?
My T60P is running Windows 7, and I'd like to clone it to the 8740W.

Re: W700 Reliability

I have an HP 8740W, but the last I looked there was no hardening firmware/software/bios available for many of these HP's, even though the CPU is up to it. I'm running Windows 10 on it and let Windows update automatically, though I use O&O Shutup10.

Re: W700 Reliability

Thank you very much for your input and advice. it's very helpful. Can you specify which CPU I should look for in a W701?

Is the screen in the W701 (WUXGA) LED Backlit? Is it any good?

UPDATE:

The Dual Cores appear to be on the W700, and Quadcores on the W701.

Re: W700 Reliability

Why do you recommend the W701 over the W700? Better CPU/GPU? No W5XX for me, as the whole point is to get a larger display. If I understand correctly, the 701s (and some late Gen W700s) dropped the Super Bright CCFL for RGB LED backlit I think the use of the word "stated" is good, because it's hard ...

My point was not that machines with older technology are less vulnerable, but rather that until they fix the problem, spending less on equipment make sense. Why buy several thousand dollars worth of computing equipment that is just as vulnerable?

Re: W700 Reliability

Can you describe your power plug issue? The reason I'm looking for a W700 is the Thinkpad keyboard and the sense that the W700 is like a T60P with a more generous screen size and better brightness. Re: W700 Reliability

Is the Quadro 3700M unreliable? I bought one(a Lenovo variant) in order to upgrade an HP HDX Dragon, but the upgrade, though working performance-wise, has a lingering issue that results in the display lacking full "punch" due to the card only outputting 6 bits to the 8 bit panel. As a result I have ...

W700 Reliability

As I ponder not spending money to repair my T60P, and instead putting it into a W700, it occurred to me to ask about how reliable the W700 is. I like the W700 (haven't found a good one yet) because it feels like a Thinkpad, but has a 17 inch screen.

Re: T60P Startup Anomaly

I did buy a 16 x 10 HP 8740W a few months ago, and it's great with its DreamColor 2 screen, but the keyboard is nowhere as good as a ThinkPad. And there is no way that I can clone my drive into it. In what ways are the W700s deficient? Your idea of buying the bottom chassis with motherboard installe...
