Re: Advanced Format Drives in ThinkPads and using Windows XP
Any drive can be reformatted as long as it still works... If one has the proper tools! These two sources provide free disk wiping tools. IBM / Lenovo embedded controllers may or may not allow enough access for the UCSD program to work. http://hddguru.com/software/HDD-LLF-Low-Level-Format-Tool/ http:...

Re: Hard disk service life
One of the included tools with Speedfan (http://www.almico.com/speedfan.php) is the ability to read the S.M.A.R.T. status of your hard drive AND compare it online with other drives from the same manufacturer. This should give a general idea of the condition of the drive. As others have said, every m...

Re: Hardware
Sorry for taking so long to get back with you. If you can see the OS desktop on the LCD screen (Put a flashlight against it and check), you have one of two problems. The easiest to fix is a bad LCD inverter. ($10.00-$25.00 on eBay) The difficulty here is due to the complexity in dis-assembly of the ...

Re: RAM Upgrade
For What Its Worth. Intel Pentium IV processors and above run at the slowest speed of the installed RAM. If you mix PC2100 (266MHz) with PC2700 (333MHz) you get 266 MHz. It does make a difference. I do not know about AMD, but assume they work the same

Re: Hardware
Excessive heat has been the most common culprit for this problem in my experience. Next time just put your hand near the exhaust from the processor fan (Left center of the keypad near the Fn key and on the right palm rest {hard drive}). If these places are hot to the touch, you have a heat problem. ...

Icons
After doing this on three pc's, I am not sure. Two of the PC's are laptops, one an R31 with XP Pro, the other one is a T22 with XP Home. Neither of the laptops removed the Icon. The first computer (a desktop with XP Pro) worked on the first re-boot. It did not work on the second re-boot. I tried re-...

Removing the ICON
If you want to remove JUST the ICON from NWC, you will have to make changes to the registry in three different places. The places are all in the HKLM\SYSTEM\ControlSet area. In order to do this correctly, you need to open Regedit32 (Windows/System32/Regedit32) and do a search for the EXACT name as i...

Disable the card
Have you tried to disable the card rather than un-installing it? To disable the card you should either right click on "MY COMPUTER" or open Control Panel and open System. That will pop-up a new window named System Properties. You should then select Hardware followed by Device Manager. Under Device M...

TKIP and AES
If your T30 supports TKIP, you may be able to find a new driver from your card manufacturer that supports AES. Both TKIP and AES can be done in firmware. But, due to the complexity of the mathematical computations used in AES, many manufacturers add hardware to the card just to support AES. I upgrad...

Go to www.netstumbler.com and download Netstumbler. Netstumbler is a software package designed to locate access points. Install Netstumbler. Then go to MS and download the update KB893357. It adds WPA capability to windows XPSPK2. And finally go to www.pingplotter.com and download the latest version...

WPA
Assuming you are running WINXPSPK2, there is a MS update. Search for WPA update and you should find KB893357-v2-x86-ENU for the English language version. It includes WPA2-PSK. It will NOT improve your speed (that is a hardware issue with your card). If you change your cad you will probably loose som...

Ray: You are correct. The company name is eBattery Inc. They have several web addresses, but their URL is 216.240.158.164. Thinkpad batteries
I ran across a place the other day that offers to REPLACE the cells in LI-ON batteries for around $60.00. And if memory serves, they will send you a loaner while they work on yours. I e-mailed the link to a friend and will find it and post it here. It is at least worth a try as my experience is that...

Reset Switch
Of course it is possible to add a micro switch to almost anything. Actually, the power on switch on most laptops is a micro switch. The problem is there are too many unknowns at this time to tell exactly where such a switch should be located and if such a switch would work. I just dis-assembled my T...

Not really. A power supply is typically rated by the amount of current at a specified voltage that the supply can provide without exceeding the other specifications of the supply. Specifications such as Temperature, output voltage ripple, output hum and noise etc. A power consuming device is typical...

Sounds like you could have a conflict between the BIOS and the Windows settings. I have never liked either the suspend or hibernate functions. I guess I am too impatient and do not want to wait the amount of time it takes a sleeping system to wake up, load enough of the operating system into memory ...

FYI: I am using an Airlink 101 WIFI PCI card in two different desktop computers on two separate services (DSL & cable modem). I have two D-link DI-624 wireless routers. One on each service. Wireless access
Have you tried disabling the WIRED adapter?
Right click on the icon in network connections and left click on disable. Then re-boot the unit.
I am assuming you are using XP and some (read most) versions of XP do not work well with more than one active network connection in my experience.

Blink of death
I was reading about this problem on my T20, feeling very smug as I had never seen the problem. But with 40 plus years of electronics experience and playing with personal and mainframe computers since the early 70's I thought I would join the group and watch in case I found something I could share in...
