Re: Need replacement X230 keyboard

Hmm good suggestion, I do see some there. I hadn't looked there because I've been avoiding ebay in general, and I don't use paypal, but maybe I can figure something out. Thanks!

Shipping computer from Canada to US might not be worth it... I'm looking to buy an X230 keyboard, see my other post if that's of interest to you. tx

Need replacement X230 keyboard

If you know where I can buy one or have one for sale, let me know. The one I'm using now is near trashed. There are some new ones on amazon but way too expensive for an also-almost-trashed machine like this. I see some people managed to use x220 keyboards (nicer!) via some firmware mods, also a poss...

"quick" storage device test??

I bought a new X230 and immediately replaced the Windows-infected hard disk with a (so far empty, i.e. no OS) Samsung SSD. I found my way to the Lenovo Diagnostics screen, ran the memory test (passed after a few minutes) and am now running the "quick" storage device test. The "smart status" and "sma...

Re: Haswell thinkpads coming soon?

Thanks. Haswell has drastically lower idle power than earlier cpu's and so a Haswell x230 should have much longer battery life. I'm also interested in the TSX extensions for concurrent programming. Overall you're probably right though, and I should probably get an X230 while they are still out there...

Haswell thinkpads coming soon?

I'm shopping for a new laptop and notice that discounts at lenovo.com are unusually good. Meanwhile, Haswell cpu's in at least some configurations (maybe not mobile) will supposedly ship June 1. I guess I can wait that long. Any idea what past observations have been, when Intel releases a new cpu? W...

Re: First time buying ThinkPad, question about product refresh

Haswell will apparently bring a big boost in battery runtime due to much lower idle power consumption. When running flat out it's somewhat more efficient than Ivy Bridge, but not radically so. Haswell also will have some new concurrency features (TSX) that are promising for future software. I'm goin...

Re: Rant about 16:9, and maybe switching back to X60t from T520

It's not just the screen area, the screen height is smaller with the "wide" screens. I'm kind ot tempted to get a Chromebook Pixel. It's 3:2 screen seems great. Main thing I don't like about it is non-expandability of the SSD (can't use an mSATA SSD) and absence of USB 3.0. They really want you to s...

Re: 60GB SSD 41W0736 WTF?

I think Crystalmark has already been run on the Lenovo/Samsung drive. 4k random write speed (the most important number as I see it) was around 1M/sec, which means it's not one of those basically broken ultra-slow drives, but not all that impressive. The Kingspec pata drive gets around 2M/sec and the...

Re: Kingspec ssd users? (Pic Warning)

It could be that JMicron has finally gotten their act together and made controllers with reasonable performance. Or it could be that crystalmark doesn't exercise the disk sufficiently and make sure the sectors are really written out, in which case I'm going to be annoyed :(. Yes, paging to an SD car...

Well, I'm pretty impressed with memoryc and international fedex. My package arrived this afternoon, though I probably wo...

Re: Kingspec ssd users? (Pic Warning)

Well I went back and forth a bunch of times and am still not sure it made sense, but I just ordered a 64gb kingspec drive from memoryc.com. It was $183.30 before discount and I used coupon code ME12QV to get 5% off, about $9. I decided to spring for fedex shipping ($25) instead of standard shipping ...

Cover the camera with a Post-it to make it obvious that even if it is running, it's not taking anyone's picture.

Re: If you had to use another brand of computer what would it be

Panasonic Toughbook seems to be the only laptop brand that doesn't suck these days, and maybe even they suck (I haven't tried one). They're at least 4x as expensive as thinkpads and I can't afford them. Some Dells seem decently made but I never want to buy direct from them because they never stop se...

Re: WANTED -- DEAD OR ALIVE: 701C Battery

I don't think you should expect good operation from any battery that old. I'd grab it anyway though, with the idea of prying it apart and replacing the cells inside. There are a bunch of different web sites about how to do that, and a few commercial services, though the commercial places have appare...

Re: Kingspec ssd users? (Pic Warning)

The memoryc link is interesting. I did some surfing around and found they seem to be legit, but some people reported customer service problems, and slow delivery when using the cheap shipping option. Fedex shipping is $25 so I think I'd go with that. It's still cheaper than the ebay dealers and avoi...

There is a new 600x cf card from Transcend, supposedly 4-channel MLC, supports UDMA 6. Available in 8gb and 16gb from mydigitaldiscount.com but quite expensive, even more than their older 300x SLC card. Anyone want to try it?

Where did you get the Sandisk SSD and how much did it cost? I care about small-file and random write speed enough that the CF adapters aren't attractive to me at the moment. I am still thinking of getting one of the Lenovo or Kingspec SSD's from ebay, but it just seems sort of dubious spending $200+...

Has anyone actually measured the thickness with a ruler? If 1.02" includes the feet sticking out, I wouldn't count that. Anyway I think I'd calculate the average thickness.

Thanks. A little experimenting and a voltmeter test seems to show that the problem was actually with the adapter plug. I switched to another adapter and it seems to be working better.
