Re: Thinkpadders Rejoice (*LARGE PICS*)

Microsoft have finally announced a 3:2 Win 10 laptop. Looks great except for the keyboard. Perhaps this will encourage others to produce a 3:2 laptop.

Maybe the topic starter prefers a unnecessary thin laptop?

the display is very good according Lenovo standards (Contrast 1308:1, 95% sRGB, minimum brightness 3 cd/m2, no PWM). The quality is better than the X1 Carbon FHD A caution, that applies to all Lenovo laptops: "It appears that author of the review received a t470s from Lenovo with a good quality AUO...

A good deal for $36. Screen shows signs of age but is in good condition except for a few small spots. Keyboard is NMB and works well (shiny keys); 2GB memory; has some minor scuffs but cosmetically is in good condition. Only serious defect is that the fan is very noisy and needs replacing. The keyboard/bezel is one piece with a rectangular hole for the touchpad. You should be able to push the touchpad out.

They are reliable. I've bought two from forum members. Both had had considerable use before I bought them, but have worked reliably for me over an extended period.

Re: Lenovo Is Seeking Interesting User Stories

Sure, I'm doing "innovative, creative, and pathbreaking" stuff with my technology --- a 2007 era T60 with a T61 motherboard. I might do even more incredible stuff if someone would make a new computer with a decent keyboard and a tall screen. But sorry, I'm not interested in "a ton of free promotion ...

The keyboard layouts on the T460 and the Thinkpad 13 look the same to me. Both are the new standard Lenovo layout.

Re: Thinkpadders Rejoice (*LARGE PICS*)

I hope this isn't the future. The screen is still 16:9, and they further shrunk the keyboard from 6 1/2 rows to 6. There's just one issue I have with the keyboard: the right Shift key has been shrunk to fit the up-arrow key next to it. As a right-handed person who spends most of her day typing, this...

Re: Suggest a replacement for x61s

Nothing is as compact as the X61/X61s but the X1 carbons are no heavier and have a larger screen (84 sq in vs 70; 6.9 in tall vs 7.3).
The X220 has a smaller screen than an X61 (66.8 sq in vs 70.3; 6.1 in tall vs 7.3), but some are IPS, and they have very good keyboards, and are quite fast.

Re: Is XP too unsafe to use?

I mostly use XP on my work laptop, and have had no problems, but I'm fairly careful, back up frequently, have a clone of the whole hard drive, and run the free version of Malwarebytes every few days. Without the hassle of monthly backups or an antivirus program, it runs fast and free (touch wood).

Re: PgUp/PgDn vs Page Forward/Page Back

I don't think so. Apparently the Fn key behaves oddly: "Unfortunately holding down the fn key prevents any other key to be scanned by the OS. So I guess fn+s will never work the same way as alt+s works. " Other key combinations will work --- see the autokey documentation. https://autohotkey.com/docs...

Re: PgUp/PgDn vs Page Forward/Page Back

You can do this with an autohotkey script. For example, the following script will revert PgUp/PgDn to Browser_Back/Browser_Forward within any Mozilla based browser (but not elsewhere). The real problem is that the 6-row keyboard has too few keys, and so you will no longer have PgUp/PgDn. (Install au...

Fifteen inches is too small for a desktop monitor, and the best of the new monitors are spectacularly good. Re: How long a max-ed out T601 FrankenPad will last until obsolete

I'm a mathematician who spends a lot of time working on a laptop, and my answer is they will never be obsolete so long as new laptops only have short screens. There has been little change in the software available for what I do in the last ten years, and so no need for a different machine. In my vie...

In my experience working for long periods on text with mathematics, the most important factor is how black the blacks are. Here IPS wins. Some TFT screens are OK, for example, those on the T42, but many are terrible, for example, those on the X301 and some T61 s. The website notebookcheck.net measur...

Re: Are new Lenovo ThinkPads the real retro ThinkPads?

I don't need an ODD; I need a tall screen. Since there are about 300 laptop models, each with about a 0.3% share of the market, a model doesn't need much of a share of the market to be a success.
