Re: Looking for Win 7 Pro/Ultra/Enterprise COA

Apparently the German courts have decreed that it is legal to sell Win 7 OEM Activation codes without hardware. As a result you can find them on ebay for about $6. I've bought several from "cheapercodes" and they have all worked.

Re: Have you joined the 3:2 club yet?

It's not about having "sexy thin bezels". It's about having the largest screen for a given laptop size.

Ratio of screen area to that of laptop:
TP25 (16:9) 69.1%
T60 (4:3) 14.1in 77.2%
T60 (4:3) 15in 78.3%
X60/X61 (4:3) 81.7%
Matebook X (3:2) 88%.

@IBthink. What are you talking about? A 12.25x8.15 screen in a 13.35x9.15 computer would allow half-inch bezels on all sides. They could do that 10 year ago. Are you arguing they can't do it now?

Re: Thinkpadders, do NOT Rejoice, WEEP and/or DESPAIR!

Missed opportunity indeed. Ten years ago there were laptops that whose screens were only one inch shorter than the laptop (e.g., the X60/X61). The T470 is 9.15 inches tall, and so, instead of the 14 inch 12.20x6.86 (16x9) screen they could have put in a 14.7 inch 12.23x8.15 (3x2) screen. That's 20% ...

The best 4:3 screens were the 15 inch IPS UXGA (1600x1200) screens on some T42, T43, T60 computers.

Re: Thinkpadders Rejoice (*LARGE PICS*)

Nice toy, but the screen is simply too small for serious work --- smaller than a "classic" 13.3 inch screen (83.75in^2 and 6.86in tall versus 84.91in^2 and 7.98in). Also, we don't know if the keyboard has the "classic" quality.

If Teddy Roosevelt were President, he would force MS to divest itself of Windows 7 and allow someone else to maintain it in order to break up the monopoly. And that's not half of what he would do the cable monopolies etc.

Re: Reasons why the 14" screen got terrible options.

My impression (from my own experience and looking at the literature) is that 140dpi is optimal for someone with 20/20 vision viewing a screen at 22 inches. That means that 280dpi would be optimal for 20/10 vision with the screen at 22 inches, or for 20/20 vision viewing a tablet or phone at 11 inche...

Re: Replacement for my x201

The X220 is the last with the classic 7-row keyboard, and one of the last with a full-power cpu --- it's faster than many later laptops. The IPS screen is beautiful, but 16x9. You may not notice the lack of pixels unless your vision is better than 20/20. If your budget reaches that far, consider a T...

Re: Thinkpadders Rejoice (*LARGE PICS*)

A T470 with a 7-row keyboard would be better than a T470 with a 6-row keyboard, but its screen is smaller than the 13.3 inch screen on a Thinkpad 600e from year 2000 (83.75 in^2 vs 84.91 in^2). Not for serious stuff.

Nothing is as compact as the X61/X61s but the X1 carbons are no heavier and have a larger screen (84 sq in vs 70; 6.9 in tall vs 7.3).
The X220 has a smaller screen than an X61 (66.8 sq in vs 70.3; 6.1 in tall vs 7.3), but some are IPS, and they have very good keyboards, and are quite fast.
