Re: Creating a USB keyboard from any TP laptop keyboard?

OK I finally found the thread with details about which models work: http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.php?f=18&t=86096

Oddly, the mouse button has been getting better! So maybe I won't need to replace/fix it, at least for now.

Re: Creating a USB keyboard from any TP laptop keyboard?

Does anyone know exactly which model keyboards do work inside a SK-8855? Has anyone replaced theirs? My left mouse button is failing, and I don't like the new compact bluetooth keyboard. I'd like to buy a new or used kb to install. If there's more than one choice, I prefer something close to the fee...

If still available, I can also use the link to ISOs. (R51, and may work with my x40.)

Thanks.

Re: How to power on a T60 while its lid is closed?

Thanks for the correction on DVI. In the manual for two of the three docks, http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?lndocid=MIGR-61394 it is clear that the port replicater does not have a DVI port. I also looked into the USB hub a bit, since I've had problems with USB ports when docke...

Re: How to power on a T60 while its lid is closed?

You caught my reply before I remembered that you already have a dock or replicator and edited those words out. :) I think all the versions have DVI. The advanced dock can accept a video card, the advanced mini dock cannot, and the port replicator I think does not have a usb hub. There's other differ...

Re: How to power on a T60 while its lid is closed?

That one has little bumps on the bottom part, to fit the advanced mini dock or whichever T60 or T6x dock or port replicater you bought. It's heavy and strong. I never tried it in converted mode, with a monitor mounted to it. If anyone reading doesn't use a dock, I don't think it would work well beca...

You also would have an extra 256mb at 2700, outside the computer. If there is no obligation to keep the one given to you, you could buy a single stick of 1gb 2700, and sell all of the other sticks, or maybe all of the sticks except for the 2700 256 or 512. With your computer, I don't believe there i...

Re: Changing GPU in T60

You know, if the GPU was upgradable, we'd prob be complaining about the T60 being too big and/or thick, too difficult to take apart/for amateurs to fix, too expensive, or arriving too late compared to competing brands. I'd also like swappable GPU, but can appreciate that everything in a laptop is co...

Re: How to power on a T60 while its lid is closed?

Maybe someone with more knowledge than me can reply, but I don't think foam inside the computer will help much, and might make things worse(?) because there's less room, a tighter squeeze. The rigid board, if not supported by the desk, and only supported by the computer, would not solve the problem....

Re: Questions on buying an under-laptop cooling fan

The adapter sounds like the right one. I'd fully charge the battery and see how long it lasts. You can also probably see info about the battery in your Linux distro, but I don't know about your distro in particular. You can see % of capacity available. Maybe in Power settings area. So "undervolt" me...

Re: Questions on buying an under-laptop cooling fan

The R51, especially if you have a Dothan chip (2M cache, not 1M cache. Pentium 715 or better) is a very undervoltable computer. If you haven't tried undervolting yet, you might be surprised how much cooler&quieter the computer runs. You can use NHC or Rmclock to undervolt. Here's a huge thread about...

Re: How to power on a T60 while its lid is closed?

I ask because my T60 is parked on the desk under a 22" monitor. Hope you don't mean that the monitor is directly on top of the T60. If so, the weight of the monitor can press the keyboard or plastic casing into the Thinkpad's LCD, causing permanent damage to the screen. Some models are more vulnera...

Re: Cable to externally connect 2nd Hard Drive Adapter to TP

I'm pretty sure that the device works with the 2nd Hard drive adapter for Sata hard drives. Of course, it is still using PATA at the connector we're talking about. (The 2nd HDD adapter is an Ultrabay slim Pata adapter, that accepts SATA drives and converts to PATA.) I think it is a proprietary conne...

I've got one that looks like this: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=130373910322 and it works great. The one above seems to be $15 shipped worldwide. The ebay one I linked says "USB" in the title at the top of the page.

The one I bought, from a different seller, slightly different design, is USB. That's how I connect it to the computer, and it works fine, even with only one port for power.

I've bought something very similar to ebay item 140408838769 at the same $10 shipped price, but these are for 9.5mm drives. Works great. I suppose you might be able to expand the case with some or a lot of difficulty. :)

IMO for word and excel, a 1.5 Dothan would be fine. But you'll probably do internet too... Even for internet 1.5 Dothan is ok, but you could spring for a 1.8 or faster. If it were me, I'd skip the desktop, and buy both a nice $150-$300 15" R60, T60, or R52, with intel graphics, for use at home/dorm, and as a backup, and for classes/libe also buy a $150+ 12-13" X model, X40 or newer. Interesting. Dual channel-makes sense. Really I only expected 1gb to be visible, I happen to be out of 1gb sticks at the moment. :) If I ever get around to it, I guess I could experiment with 2.5gb and the BIOS setting for reserved memory for suspend mode, to see if there's any benefit of 2.5g vs 2g...

Single 2GB stick works in R52

A 2gb stick seems to work fine in an R52, even though we've been told it's limited to 1GB/slot.

Of course, if I were to add more memory, it would probably not be seen.

In case this helps anyone out there.
