Re: X41 pasive cooling options ?

RMClock as mentioned in previous posts. somewhere there is a list of "reliable" voltages for the X41 and just using those without any further experimentation my machine is silent 95% of the time. the HDD also makes a lot of noise and that got shut up by going with the SATA SSD mod. working on a way ...

Re: done: X41 with SATA SSD mod (pics)

well it's been 4.5 years since i did this mod and the machine still gets used hard every single day....still on the same XP install and still as snappy as it was when i first got it up and running. never bothered figuring out any kind of TRIM or wear leveling scheme other than what may or may not be...

Re: The "Titanium" cover on a "Z"

while i have only played around with anodizing titanium many years ago it is dead simple compared to aluminum which i do a lot of. all it involves is a weak acidic solution (lemon juice works good) and DC voltage. since no real heat is involved there should be no problem at all with the plastic part...

Re: T43p SATA Guide (Beware pictures, 56k-ers)

the thing i don't like about most of these SATA mods is that the drive pretty much becomes a permanent part of the machine, no easy removal as per the original design. and on the X41 the drive cage and the the way it clamps the IDE connector and system board to the case is a big part of the machine'...

Re: Windows 7 on X40 via USB stick?

good to hear it worked! on my X41 7 worked just fine but it's a pretty big step up hardware wise from the X40. VLC should be just fine but i don't know about itunes, never used it myself and have no need for it. i would assume that you'd be forced to use the latest version and that it would be bloat...

In my dreams I have a slipstreamed install disc for each series of Thinkpads, with the correct drivers and updates etc applied. but that will probably just remain a dream.. i have some of those but they're like 3 years old and probably missing a few thousand "critical" hot fixes...who cares though,...

Re: Windows 7 on X40 via USB stick?

IMO the easiest windows for a noob is XP with classic theme, classic start menu and classic folder view. office would be anything up to 2003. XP with all the "helpful" crap, 7, vista and the newer office are just too cluttered with crap. BUT, since they got new computers i guess they'll have to lear...

Re: T23 in my opinion is about the best.

while i like all the old T series up to the T43 i think the ultimate thinkpad is the X41 with a sata ssd. ultra portable and so much tougher than any of the others. easier to tear down than the T20s and T30s and tons easier than the T43. at home i usually sit at a T30 or T43 but at work it's the X41...

Re: Windows 7 on X40 via USB stick?

i had to learn the process when i got my X41 that came with 7 and i wanted XP. decided that i would stick it out and find a way to do it with a thumbdrive instead of giving in and using an external CD drive. i hate discs and by using a thumbdrive there is a really nice speed advantage. there are ton...

Would be interesting to see if anyone is able to perform the said modifications, without having to worry about the machine falling apart, any cables coming loose and what-not. I guess that moving to Windows 7 from XP was a bad move, as I have only 3.5 hours of battery life with a configuration similar to yours Zagnut. kepp in mind that i'm also using an SSD and the SATA-PATA bridge which i believe is a power hog has also been removed from the system board. the XP i'm usi...

Wow, a very ballsy modification. Gettin' comfy with a soldering iron on a hard drive must take nerves of steel. How is performance? Have you run any benchmarks? no soldering done on the drive itself, just on the adapter and the four small wires to the system board...and removing the pata-sata bridg...

in the end i went for cosmetics and got a machine that is just about "as new" as is possible and it's a 1.6GHz.

the 60GB HDD doesn't really seem slow to me (even with win7) but since i love to tinker i'll still be going with the SSD.

the X40 is the one that's limited to 1.5GB.

and while i can agree that a wide screen is usually better for viewing a pair of windows side by side it doesn't really make that much of a difference when you're talking about netbook sized displays.
