Re: W530 Minidisplay port to HDMI TV?

When Microsoft Word for Windows version 6.0, and Microsoft Word version 6.0, were both released around 1986, I had 1200 pages of fine documentation to read, and I got a chance to find every feature in each program. Which was the norm back then. In fact, Windows used to come with documentation. Now t...

Re: W530 Minidisplay port to HDMI TV?

Thanks, but F7 and FN+F7 both do nothing here in Win10. A quirk about Win+P: the laptop screen drops to a smaller image area, black shadowboxed on both sides, when I have it set for "Duplicate", even though the laptop has nothing connected to it. Is there a setting someplace that is telling it what ...

Re: W530 Minidisplay port to HDMI TV?

Thanks guys, I think dr nailed it! Oh DUH, who ever heard of Win+P ?? A shortcut to settings that apparently just aren't in someplace logical, like the display settings or the control panel? (Sigh) Sure enough Win+P shows I'm set to "primary only" and that probably is all it needs. On trying another...

W530 Minidisplay port to HDMI TV?

[Mods, if there's a better W530 section, I couldn't find it. Please feel free to move as appropriate.] Today I just tried to connect my W530 with Nvidia graphics via a cable, theoretically a 4k capable minidisplayport to HDMI cable, to a 24" Toshiba TV with HDMI inputs. The phrases "No joy" and "Som...

Refinishing a W530 case?

I suppose this is about as generic a "hardware" question as you can ask. After six years, the top (back of screen lid) of my W530 is looking a bit tired. Some streaks and shallow scratches in the "rubberized" coating that they are finished with. I've seen folks use fine polish to make them look bett...

Re: W10: FIX for Lenovo Power Manager

George- I run MS OSes (reluctantly including Win10 since everything else is already tombstoned) because in today's world, if you go into someone's office and work on their computers, those computers stand about a 95% chance of running a MS OS. The UNIX systems are mainly secured in server closets, o...

Re: W10: FIX for Lenovo Power Manager

Well, pid, last I'd seen was some five years ago. And at that point industry estimates were that 25% of all personal computers (office and home alike) were running malware, typically sending spam or doing other tasks for which the owners weren't being paid and might not have been too happy about. So...

Re: W10: FIX for Lenovo Power Manager

Not an important puzzle...I can see you haven't read Clifford Stoll's book, The Cuckoo's Egg. He found a real tiny discrepancy in computer time-sharing billing, which led to one of the (then) largest espionage investigations. Given that my email client is accessing multiple accounts and routinely ta...

Re: W10: FIX for Lenovo Power Manager

Yeah, after I found that "new" place to go, I took out the big flamethrower and just nuked 'em all. Which seems to have curved the "Weren't you asleep when I was last night?" issue, but still seems to leave the system with odd things like emails that sure weren't there when I shut it down. Between p...

Re: W7 is still safer than W10...

There will always be a problem with "new" software, in that no one has had experience with it. Add in the mass of code and MS's habit of not discussing things, or admitting them, and it gets worse. I found the Win10v.1511 upgrade that I was stuck on, was blocking any major upgrades a year later. Fou...

Re: W10: FIX for Lenovo Power Manager

Has Lenovo come up with a fix to restore the lid closure/sleep options? I've noticed that W10 (upgraded or clean) will put the computer to sleep when the lid is closed, with no option to change that. And, that sometimes when the computer has been sleeping, it automatically starts to wake when the li...

Re: My computer is waking itself up!

No such option in the MS Power Options menus here. There was something similar somewhere else, among the things I turned off after the original post. But you still need an EVENT to "awake from sleep" and there were no events happening. At least, none scheduled or logged. Which leaves the unlikely bu...

Well, either I'd better try to corner the market in tinfoil hats (genuine tin, because aluminium just doesn't work the same way) or some of the talk about "wtf is intel up to anyway?" really is worrisome. There's mystery code that keeps special ports open at all times? And is so persistent that fede...

But then Gargoyle would know I'm trying to switch it off, and they'd tattle to Intel, who would send the stealth ninjas in the moon suits to come around in the middle of the night and send magic packets to wake my LAN and hack into my computer to turn it back on. Catch-22. (VBG) It can be good sport...

I hadn't played with the management engine. There was no simple clear explanation of what it might do FOR me, so I said screw it and didn't enable anything there. I don't think it ever appeared before W10.

I'm not sure if comptometers (and I've used them) are ever considered "computers", any more than abacuses (abaci?) are. They are computing machines to be sure. Classic Victor Comptometers. Did you see "Hidden Figures" ? Good movie. Claims that "computers" were people, "computing machines" and such w...

Re: What computer have you had for the longest? When did you get it?

My oldest computer would be the 6" analog computer that my mother gave me, made possibly around 1942. Followed by my own Hemi log log duplex, 1969, which still gets used. So nice never to need batteries or backup power or have problems reading it in full sunlight. And before you say "I meant DIGITAL...

Thanks. I found the system logs yesterday, and for the life of me there's nothing in there that would seem to be a "self triggering" event that would wake the computer. My computer is waking itself up!

W530 stuck on Win10 v.1510 (?) an older Win10 version. (Older because it can't upgrade past this. Don't ask now.) Normally I just suspend it, watch to make sure it has powered down, and close the lid at night. And lately (month or two?) I've been noticing the fan is on at a good power when I wake up...

T61P: Reinstall XP and Intel Wireless LAN?

I've taken my old T61P and tried to reload the drive so it is a clean dual-boot to DOS and XP. Silly me, I forgot that makes a clean installation but leaves driver issues. And I can't convince the machine that the Intel (ABN? standard) wireless network adapter is in there. It just sees an unknown de...

"Micro$haft Update for W7" Especially since that will never happen again, according to MS. A general update, i.e. a Service Pack, is n longer going to happen. Re: i7 Seventh generation won't run Win7?

Consider the limits of virtual machines, regardless of OS. For something like communicating over a USB3.1 port, unless there is code in the virtual machine that allows that hardware to be used, it will be inaccessible. And with WIn7 being unable to access some of the new hardware, that could be prob...

Re: i7 Seventh generation won't run Win7?

From what I've been reading overnight, it is actually a financial decision from Microsoft. Those new ports of course didn't exist when Win7 was being...

i7 Seventh generation won't run Win7?

I saw mention online that new new Intel i7 SEVENTH generation processors, the ones that are "new" now, will not or cannot run Windows7. So users buying a 7th gen i7 are forced to buy into a new OS as well, like it or not. Can anyone confirm or refute this for me? Or are there tricks to getting Win7 ...

Re: And another reason to avoid Micro$haft's W10

OK, was the old Windows Cardfile (cardfile.exe) program bug-free? Of course, the 1024 "card" limit was problematic, but many people kept using it until MS effectively killed it, by blocking 8 and 16 bit apps in the new OSes. And of course with bigger programs like dBase or Lotus, you could even repo...

Re: And another reason to avoid Micro$haft's W10

Sometimes it is something SO trivial that you'd never find it without hours examining both machines (new & old). Like, the software requires dot net 2.5 to run, and the new machine only has 4.x installed on it. And the updates don't roll-up everything cumulatively you need the old one there. Little ...
