The Atheros card is better, IMHO...01C9 solved
I had this identical problem in my A31p. The 01c9 error has been solved. I believe the Atheros card has better control over the transmit power over other cards and has exceptional sensitivity. I am using the card sometimes sold as a CM-9. I have personally performed this fix and it works on my a31p ...

James: Jeez, I get so sick of reading this complaint. I'm sure I speak for a lot of us here when I say I do not fault IBM for not supporting devices which were not on the market when the a31's were being made. Their product is good or we would not have purchased it. Please do not take it personally....

Previous versions of the A31p BIOS have been comparatively permissive regarding wireless LAN mini-pci upgrades. For example, no error messages is displayed regarding too many Ethernet adapters, subsequent to application of the 1802.com patch. Huh? As you can see from many posts here, I believe the ...

James: I took a look at the page you mentioned as I would like a copy of the HMM myself. But since IBM went to a password type ftp site many of their web links don't work. This page contains one of them. For a while now I have been unable to connect to the IBM ftp server....more accurrately I can co...

A thought
From further research, more speculation: Since the card which was removed to make room for the 802.11abg card was a IBM "high rate wireless" /modem combo card, is it possible its hardware ID returned to the BIOS was identifying itself as a "modem" therefore the 01C9 error is not returned? If this is...

Reply to friedrich-eugen: Friedrich: I just emailed the ebay seller of the 802.11abg card you mentioned. it is indeed the same card as mine. Unfortunately he is staying clear of the issue, I suspect his CMOS patch is indeed the no1802.com. He says the 01C9 "too many ethernet controllers" is a "warni...

Continued....
As you can tell from my email, I am a pilot and do travel with my laptop a lot. If I log off, go to standby mode, that works for short durations, however one time when I did that and placed the laptop in its case (metal, foam lined briefcase) it became quite warm. I much prefer hibernate when the la...

BIOS mod, Atheros 802.11abg PCI, bios error A31p, SOLVED!!
Greetings all: I just upgraded my a31p with an Atheros 802.11abg mini PCI card. I am looking for someone with programming expertise to modify my bios to eliminate the "too many ethernet controllers" POST bootup message. I successfully eliminated the expected 1802 error with the no1802.com utility ru...

no-1802.com
I am doing the same on my a31-p. Seems there are two "versions" of the no1802.com floating around.
Send me your email and i'll email you the one which worked for me (at least on the a31p).

Try a different card
A couple of years ago I went through two 3com 10/100 and modem combo cards. On an A20p. However in both cases I was getting errors on POST (bootup). IBM replaced the 3com card with an Intel one. In your case, I would suggest swapping the card with a known good one. Then if you can connect you can ve...

Downgraded to 1.01 embedded controller
Well I found the 1.01 version and sure enough, the flash from OS version (no floppy) *will* allow downgrading to an earlier version.
The second battery is recognized fine now. I am convinced this is a bug in the firmware of the 1.06 version. My A31p uses the "N" bios.

Me, Too. How to downgrade???????
I just "upgraded" to the new embedded controller 1.03 (1NHT06WW) and BIOS 1.07 (1NET13WW). Am running A31p, (2653R9U) with a second ultrabay battery installed in the left bay. CD-DVD combo in RH bay. No battery problems before the update. WinXP SP1, 1gb. I ran the updates to fix an intermittent resu...
