Re: Thinkpad X1 Yoga (2nd): ethernet adapter?

If you use Ethernet, then yes. I think I worded my question badly. I have a Cat5 cable to my office upstairs, where my old networked printer is connected. There's also a hub or switch (not sure which, have to check) and a cable I used sometimes on my X220. The WiFi signal isn't great, and I'm sure ...

Thinkpad X1 Yoga (2nd): ethernet adapter?

I'm trying to add Ethernet capability to my ThinkPad X1 Yoga (2nd), I think model 20JD. Wondering whether it's better to use USB-C, USB3.0, or the dedicated port. Don't have any known need for gigabit but I guess I could get it. ThinkPad USB3.0 to Ethernet Adapter (4X90S91830) C$23.99 Lenovo USB-C t...

Re: X300: Problem w/ SSD, also can I use HDD?

Thanks for the help so far. I'm stuck again and hoping it's something simple I'm overlooking. I got a 1.8-2.5" adapter it's a Lenovo 42W7888 and I assume used. But it's a pretty simple thing and there's no obvious damage. I went with this instead of a USB-1.8" cable, since I have one of the latter a...

Re: X300: Problem w/ SSD, also can I use HDD?

X300 has same chipset as T61, so it's SATA 2. Okay thanks. I found a SATA II 1.8" drive for about $55, and the combination 3x5cm and mSATA adapter (assuming I got the terminology right) is about $47. The latter is SATA III I believe. Since the X300 only requires SATA II as you say, I'll probably go...

Re: X300: Problem w/ SSD, also can I use HDD?

The 1.8-2.5" adapter finally came on Friday and I was able to test the X300's 128GB SSD in both the external enclosure and the "toaster", using my X220. In both cases the drive wasn't seen (the toaster came up as drive F: when it was plugged in, but when I clicked on F:, it said "insert drive"). I d...

Re: X300: Problem w/ SSD, also can I use HDD?

If you want more storage maybe you can look at fitting a 7mm spinning drive to your Caddy.
Interesting idea. On eBay I found a caddy for $18 from China, and 320GB drives for $28. Is that all that's needed?

Thanks!

Re: X300: Problem w/ SSD, also can I use HDD?

Just want to make sure I'm on the right track here. I have all the following at home, but I'm now pretty sure I didn't bring any of it with me on vacation: - Original 64GB 1.8" SSD - USB cable to use 1.8" SSD as a bare external drive - USB cable to use 2.5" SSD as a bare external drive - 128GB USB t...

Re: X300: Problem w/ SSD, also can I use HDD?

Ah sorry, I didn't think of that. It seems an mSATA is 2.5" (too big for the X300 but the size of the X220), microSATA is the 1.8" size? What is the thing called that goes in the microSATA adapter (and is presumably smaller than 1.8")?

Thanks!

Re: X300: Problem w/ SSD, also can I use HDD?

It looks like that adapter allows me to use an even small SS device in the SSD slot? I'm not clear how that's better than buying a 1.8" SSD. Though I do have a 128GB thumb drive which is why I was wondering if it could be used as a bootable drive.

Thanks!

Re: X300: Problem w/ SSD, also can I use HDD?

Thank you. I guess I'll hope I still have the old 64GB that shipped with the X300 (though don't know how long it will last). Is there any useful combination where I could boot the X300 from the optical drive, then run it from a 128GB USB stick? I know (or assume anyway) that it would be slow. Or can...

Re: X300: Problem w/ SSD, also can I use HDD?

Thanks, am I right that I would do these tests with the drive mounted as an external on another machine, or does it need to be in the X300 with perhaps a bootable optical disk? I have both computers with me so I can do it on the X220.

X300: Problem w/ SSD, also can I use HDD?

My venerable X300 (Win 7 Pro, upgraded 128GB SSD) came out of hibernation yesterday with the error below. It seemed likely to be a failure of the SSD. I googled the error message and got some very long and complicated discussions of the issue. Not sure I understood the discussions completely. After ...

Re: Replacement for X220: X260 or E470? Or something else?

Thank you. I wish I could do that but I don't think it's there (unless it's not in the Win 7 Start Menu). I think I blew away whatever was on it and moved my existing install from the 500GB HDD that came with the computer and which had a couple of years use. The only Acronis I can find is an ancient...

Re: Replacement for X220: X260 or E470? Or something else?

Thank you both. To your questions... 1. Windows Properties says C: is CT250BX100SSD1 which is Crucial and highly rated (mostly 4/5 or 5/5, Google's rating aggregator would seem to be giving it 4.8/5. I couldn't find any known issues but that doesn't mean there are none. 2. The fan (which was labelle...

Re: Replacement for X220: X260 or E470? Or something else?

I'm betting fixing your X220 is likely to be considerably less than a new notebook, if you're happy with it otherwise. A board is probably less than $50 on eBay. You're right, and I'm certainly the first to tell my friends and others I support that they don't need a new computer, they need to run a...

Re: Replacement for X220: X260 or E470? Or something else?

Thank you both. I guess I have to resign myself to Windows 10 (or Linux I guess). So be it, I can adapt to pretty much anything (especially if I can turn off auto-updating). I should note, in case it wasn't clear, that the Dell Inspiron has been here less than a week and I believe has 30-day return ...

Replacement for X220: X260 or E470? Or something else?

I hope this is the right forum for this, I'm leaning towards the X260. :) My X220 is acting up again and I'm thinking it's time for a replacement. I'm hoping to get some expert feedback on some of the options. I don't want to spend a lot on it and I actually bought a Dell 15" Inspiron (!) which came...

Re: Does anyone have X220 recovery disks (64-bit Win 7, I think Pro)?

Thank you. I found the original slow HDD in a box and I'm trying to limp along with that until a replacement SSD arrives. Having trouble with Windows update, 174 important (or whatever) updates but only about 40 installed. It had trouble downloading again so I'll give it a break. Several apps update...

Thank you. I have since found the original HDD which is painfully sure but I might limp along with until a replacement SSD gets here.

I used it to burn recovery disks. Is 2 DVDs right? Send awfully few but I may be comparing to CDs on older machines.

Thanks!

Re: X220 recovery media?

Thanks! It looks like it's asking for a product key but I don't think I have one. When I did the friend's Toshiba I was told not to worry, the key wss in the BIOS. Is it different with Windows 7? Where would I look for product key for the X220, some piece of paper or electronic?

Thanks again!

X220 recovery media?

I posted in Marketplace asking if anyone had recovery disks (or images) but I had a few other questions that might be more X220-specific. My X220 is a model 4286CTO and has the USB3.0 port. I'm pretty sure it came with Win 7 Pro 64-bit. But I can't find recovery media (probably did make it) and my S...

Does anyone have X220 recovery disks (64-bit Win 7, I think Pro)?

My X220's SSD is failing and I can't find the recovery media anywhere. :( I'm sure I made some, just can't find. My X220 is a Type 4286-CTO, the one with the USB3.0 port. There's a sticker saying "Windows 7" so I know it came with that, and 64-bit, and I'm pretty sure it's the Pro version. Does anyo...

Re: T40p and T41 - mini dock vs port replicator II

I heard back from the seller of the no-key Mini-Dock. It sounds like it's actually a PRII (no keyslot). I think an honest but sloppy mistake because they both have the same manual. If it's really a PRII, it makes it a mid-range price (towards the high end). The Mini-Dock with key is still the cheape...

Re: T40p and T41 - mini dock vs port replicator II

Thanks. I don't know why I thought one was bigger in the manual at http://download.lenovo.com/ibmdl/pub/pc/pccbbs/options/92p1837.pdf , perhaps I was confusing PRII with PR. The illustrations on p8 of that PDF make it pretty clear they're the same. I can see the MD adapter is big, I guess if it only...

Re: T40p and T41 - mini dock vs port replicator II

Does the Mini-Dock stick out further than the PRII? It looks like it in the manual drawings but there are no sizes that I can see. And by how much? And I've seen PRII part numbers 74P6733|74P6734, is there a difference? I really just want to make connecting/disconnecting simpler, and I have 3 AC ada...
