Re: 750C HDD doesn't spin up
Based on what's going on, I'd say the system board is bad. It sucks, since your other board doesn't put out video. I know it might not be an option, but there is a PCMCIA boot, where you can use a compact flash card as your boot up device. I don't remember if this is limited to 512MB or not, since ...

Re: 701C replacement batteries
Using a spot welder is definitely not rocket science. I worked for a laptop battery rebuilder back in 2007, so I have first hand experience with them. It's a form of welding, but nothing like if I were building a farm trailer or farm equipment (I hire someone else who knows how to weld to do that s...

Re: 750C serial port max bit rate?
K, I'm not sure why, but while set to 38.4Kbps I've been getting a buttload of lost packets, but bumping the speed up to 115.2Kbps suddenly everything works fine, with packet loss being mere 1-2%. I don't understand why the packet loss would peak out at certain speed and then drop when speed is rais...

[SOLVED] 750C serial port max bit rate?
I've been playing around with some very old OS/software on my 750C, and part of the setup was getting network to work. Since the OS (very early, pre-2.0 Linux) doesn't yet support any of the PCMCIA network cards I have I've tried using PPP/SLIP with null modem cable. The setup works, but the maximum...

Re: 750C HDD doesn't spin up
Did you also try to boot from a diskette? Yup, works fine. is the drive detected by bios? Nope, the only sign of something being connected there is the half-lit HDD indicator LED. AFAIR it's possible to test HDD and Mobo in BIOS. From what you tell, I assume it's indeed something wrong with the mot...

Re: 750C HDD doesn't spin up
First thing to do is to clean the contacts. The contacts look clean upon visual inspection, but I'll clean them anyway, with Deoxit. Did you try to plug into 750c any other HDD asembly? Yes. Same result - works in another machine, doesn't work in this one. I have another 750C motherboard, but that ...

I then, rub Nivea hand cream into the rubberized coating, then wipe it off like I didn't want it on to begin with. I buff it afterwards, with a blue, lint free, paper shop towel shop towel. Not only does it restore the coating to almost new condition, it reduces fingerprints. Wait, do you mean it r...

Re: Thinkpad 701cs Upgrade AMD 5x86 133Mhz
No, I didn't install any heatsink on the CPU. Yes it's hot but I think it is acceptably. It doesn't freeze if I don't use floppy drive or sound card. It had been tested it in Quake for an hour or more. It's a pity that you don't have photos of your board, they could help me to find what else should...

750C HDD doesn't spin up
Subj. Pulling the HDD in the caddy as a whole single module from 750C and plugging it into 755C it spins up fine, but plugging it back into 750C results in a half-lit HDD indicator and no HDD sound of any kind. I suspect that there is simply no power to HDD connector on the motherboard, but I can't ...

Re: Thinkpad 701cs Upgrade AMD 5x86 133Mhz
I do have an AMD 5x86 133MHz board, got it from the very same badabumm. But it's a lot of hassle to open up the machine to get to it. 701C(S) is probably the most difficult to disassemble/reassemble ThinkPad I've worked on. The comments in the post mention heat, and mine does get quite hot after run...

That I'm reserving for those machines that are already gooeying away, those that don't yet stick to everything that touches them I'd like to preserve the best I can.RealBlackStuff wrote: ↑Sat Sep 21, 2019 12:49 amIf all else fails, try this: viewtopic.php?f=28&t=121754

Preserving rubberized coating - what environmental factors to avoid?
I have multiple ThinkPad from early nineties, on some of them the rubberized coating is still in a very nice condition, and on some it's gone tacky and sticky and stays on whatever touches the machine. I have some newer machines (like 760-series) that are more tacky than my good 750C, and I broken 7...

Re: (WANTED) A31P QUALITY CONDITION
I can only wish you good luck - other than m-models, A-series machines appear to be extremely hard to find, especially the p-models, and even more so in good condition. A2Xp/m/e commonly suffer from power problems, and A3X(p) commonly suffer from desoldered RAM slots. After trying to collect A20p th...

WTB: 770X/Z hinges for 13.7" screen
Subj. The mentioned models can have either 14" 1024x768 screen or 13.7" 1280x1024 screen, the later using wider hinges that serve also as spacers between the smaller TFT panel and the lid. Alternatively, I'm willing to buy a whole machine with a 1280x1024 13.7" screen.

Apologies for necroposting.
I'm running a W510 unit with 840QM (720QM originally) and 32GiB RAM. No issues so far, but I'm running Linux and not Windows, if that even matters.

Re: 701C replacement batteries
I'm kinda cringing, because you really should have used a spot welder, though both battery ends need to be flat. I guess it at least works, but I'd still be leery of your method. Though I have noticed some of the battery circuitry is spotty; I built a 760 LiIon battery, and mysteriously, 4 of my ce...

Re: 701C replacement batteries
Did you rebuild your primary battery? I regret tossing my leaked NiMH batteries over a decade ago, as I still have a 701C and CS, though both are stored away. Yes. I used 20 AWG wire to solder standard AA NiMH Eneloop cells together. Macgyvered a stand for said cells to hold them in place during so...

Props to ckaufman - I was at first reluctant to make a purchase with money order, but he did well on his promise, and the machine arrived extremely quickly. According to him this is his first sale, and it continues his good reputation as a buyer. Well deserved, sir!

A20p/A21p/A22p motherboards
I found a place that still sells the subj. Problem is they've made a mess out of FRU numbers - e.g. an FRU for an A21p mobo (with Rage Mobility 128 and 16MiB video RAM) is assigned to a mobo for A21e with Rage Mobility M and 4MiB video RAM. Pretty much the only board that doesn't seem to have that m...

Re: Wanted: A30p, A31p
Hmm I do have an A30p and an A31p. However, both have some form of motherboard problem. A30p doesn't charge any of the batteries (main or Ultrabay), but drains the battery just fine (which makes me think it is not a fuse problem), while the A31p has the famous RAM slot contacts issue. But both unit...

Re: ThinkPad T41p screen size confusion (did I get a T42p instead of the claimed T41p?)
If both of the above questions have positive answers, then my guess is I got a T41p with a T42p CPU in a 15" T42p body, which effectively makes it a 15" T42p machine. If that's the case, is there anything other than sourcing and price that's stopping me from installing a 1600x1200 display panel in ...
