but the problem remains as described above.

There must be thousands of T42 model 2373 with XPSP2 in the field.
Has noone seen this behaviour on his machine?

Which router or access point do you use on the other side?
Do you know which Atheros chipset is build in?

Mine has a AR5212 chipset and definitely supports 108Mbit mode,
because I use it with PC cards.

... Don't worry it won't have any effect on the drivers, but will install the Client Utility just fine. After the install is complete it'll ask you to reboot.
