Re: IBM Personal System 2 8550 50Z Processor upgrade
You're not going to get those Windows 3.1 floppies to boot because they don't have anything to boot on them. They just contain the install files for Windows 3.1. You still need an MS-DOS boot floppy. You will also need to first partition and format the hard drive and install MS-DOS. Here's a link to...

Re: 14.1" T61 in T60 chassis Frankenpad
If you're really careful you should be able to swap the stickers inside the lid so the FrankenPad is correctly labeled as T61. That aside, I'd consider that a huge upgrade just based on looks; the T61's bezel is just plain ugly.

Around the turn of the century, my late father gave me his old Northgate Omnikey Ultra which I believe used Alps Blue key switches. I'm split between that or the keyboard on the Amstrad PPC640 as the most comfortable keyboard I've ever used.

Re: T410 Days are far from over.
Nice looking computer. My late father purchased a refurbished T410 in 2014 and it's my mom's daily driver now. Also, I've been using Linux Mint since Fall of 2016 when I bought a T400 off eBay that had it preloaded. I decided I like the OS and now run it on most of my computers (though alongside Win...

You could always use it as a terminal to RDP/VNC into a more powerful but less portable machine in your house. You might also find renewed functionality with some versions of Linux.

Re: T420 16gb RAM success stories? Will ECC (or "registered") work?
Late last year, I had a T420. I never ran it with 16gb but I did have one with 12gb RAM (4gb and 8gb chip in it) and it ran. They don't officially support 8gb chips simply because they weren't around yet when the T420 came out.

What exactly is the issue you are having? I know a Korean guy who works on older ThinkPads and a few who work on computers. It's a longshot but I could bring the issue up and ask one of them about it next time one of us are in a conversation.

^Back in the mid-2000s when I was still new here, I regularly did that with ThinkPad 760s. I had even sold a few 760s in the marketplace here that were built from spare/leftover parts.

Re: T420 slots
A thought I had was to stick an MSATA SSD in the slot on the bottom side of the computer. It will only run at SATA II but that's still sufficient to boot off of. Since the system is running off that, you can just keep a screwdriver and a collection of old SATA 2.5" drives handy and use them as secon...

Re: T400 P8400 to T9600 worth it?
Funny enough, with a Dell laptop I had about a year ago, I did the opposite. I went from a T9600 to a P8400 in hopes of making the machine run cooler. If it made a difference, it wasn't obvious as the culprit was actually the nVidia Quadro chip it had and a heatsink that clogged easily and quick. Th...

Re: What computer have you had for the longest? When did you get it?
I have a ThinkPad 600X I picked up off eBay in 2010. However, it looks like absolute butt and when I say it's still functional, I mean so in the most remote and technical sense. At the beginning of April, 2012, it looked brand new having just had it's keyboard, lid, hinges and battery replaced. By M...

Re: What operatings systems are y'all using on your vintage ThinkPads?
I have a 600X running Embedded POSReady 2009 and a T60 running Windows 7 Ultimate. Until sometime in January of this year, I had a T420 and a T400 both running Windows 10. I sold the T420 shortly after upgrading the screen on my Latitude E7250 from 1366x768 TN to 1080P IPS touchscreen and gave the T...

Re: How many of you no longer own laptops?
The first laptop I ever owned was a ThinkPad 350C that was given to me while I was in 6th grade in 1998. Since then, I've always had to have a notebook handy. I have a pretty nice cell phone but I like having a keyboard and large screen. I don't think I could get along without a decent notebook. The...

Re: 760LD LCD 640x480 or 800x600
Is the 760LD are rare or worthful machine? Looking to get one at some point. Not particularly. The L and LD were marketed to schools and government agencies. They're pretty much de-tuned 760C/CDs with smaller displays that only ran at 640x480 and in lieu of the mWave audio/modem combo, they have an...

I noticed several months ago when I replaced the LCD panel on my Dell Latitude E7250 that it's hinges have a design really similar to what was used in the ThinkPad 600.

Re: 760LD LCD 640x480 or 800x600
As far as I know, the 755CX is the only member of the 755 series to support an 800x600 display. Also, FWIW, on the later PCI based 760s, you could replace the 800x600 display with a 1024x768 panel if you also replaced the video board with the appropriate part. That being said, you might be able to u...

A few years back, I tightened the hinges on a 600X and the more I used it, the tighter they got then they just snapped and now I can only use it if the lid is resting on the wall or some books.

The hinges themselves have a bolt you can turn to tighten them. However, in my experience, that fix doesn't last and also, if you overtighten, you'll flat out break your hinges.

Re: The official 755 Upgrade and general information Topic
FWIW, you can install a 760 series CD drive into a 755 (but a 755 CD drive won't work in a 760). If you get one of the newer 20x drives from towards the end of 760 production, you'll have faster read times and better luck with CD-Rs. Also, not totally relevant but if you have a Pentium version of th...

Re: 760LD LCD 640x480 or 800x600
A few years ago I attached the 800x600 display from a ThinkPad 760E to a ThinkPad 760L. You'll get a picture but with some distortion and it won't be usable and you won't be able to use all of the pixels of the higher resolution display.

Thrift store find
Yesterday I was at a thrift store and found this gigantic and quite ugly computer marked for $10. Naturally I had to look inside of it and when I saw it had a somewhat modern motherboard in it (just saw it had an LGA775 motherboard) I had to have it. When I got home, to my surprise, it had a Core 2 ...

Re: 365 and 755 LCD Assembly Swap?
A lot of the mid 90s models had similar parts but were just different enough to make parts swaps difficult. I know the 750s and 360s used the same parts but with different fittings. The 365 used the same shell as the 360 but with modifications. If you want to modernize a 360 or 750/755, your best be...

With the Radeon, I run my screen at 1024x768 with 32-bit color and a 100mhz refresh rate. I ran the matrox at 1024x768 with 24-bit color and an 85mhz refresh rate. However, regardless of refresh rate, color depth and resolution, the age-old Matrox card looked significantly better than the Radeon.
