Wondering what my 770X is worth...

I'm considering upgrading to something better (possibly a decent A31P if I can find one) and am wondering what my beloved 770X is worth. Being that the majority of the 770's on Fleabay are parts only/junkers, it's really not much help for me to peruse those. Anyhoo here's the specs... *Thinkpad 770X...

I'm also hoping that I can take the front faceplate off the SR-8171-L and use it directly on the UJDA-750 -- the eject button and activity light look like they may line up correctly, and it looks like the connections on the rear of the faceplate may be almost (but not exactly) identical. If everyth...

Best Bet: M a t s u s h i t a SR-8171-L DVD Drive IBM FRU: 05k9066 ASM P/N: 05K9065 Date: 9909 Rev: 304 Connector: Appears to be a standard internal IDE connector fully compatible with current standard slimline 12mm CD/DVD drives. I can vouch for this as I transplanted the old 8171 from my 770X wit...

Is the original 770X 8GB HD *that* inefficient?

I recently replaced the original 8GB Travelstar drive with an 80GB Samsung drive that I acquired and find that I can maybe get another 30 minutes of battery life (2:30'ish vs. a shade over 2 hrs). Are the older drives this bad in terms of power usage or is this just a fluke? One other thing about th...

UGH--thought the problem went away...

But apparently there's still a gremlin at work on my 770X. After my replacing the CMOS battery a couple of months ago and running my TP on an "ice blanket" (one of those things you put in a cooler) for a few days, the problem seemed to go away....until yesterday when some manifestation of it came ba...

The 8178 will read burned DVDs (+/-R/W) as well as DVD-RAM. There's usually a couple cheap on Fleabay (none right now, though)

I know for a fact that XP will run on a 266 (my old 770E before the screen died), and it'll definitely run on a 300 (the 770X I have now). You just want to make sure to get as much RAM in there as possible.

Re: itunes & 600e

i understand if you download them to just listen to them on that computer but once you are done with it on your computer and want to put them on your ipod, presuming that you have one, the transfer speed is very slow, becuase the 600e only has one USB 1.0 port, albieght that you can get a USB hub. ...

Newer DVD drive on 770--it works!

Bought a newer M a t s u s h i t a SR-8178 drive off of Ebay to replace the SR-8171 that was already in there and with just some slight modifications to the bezel from the old drive, I got the newer drive to fit perfectly! Very economical and it even reads DVD+/-R's to boot (I think it may work with...

There's something to know before doing the mods. If you disassamble the DVD-ROM of your 770X into the bare ODD module and bezel (guide or connector), you can put the ODD "bezel" of 770X to a new DVD/CD-RW Combo. Then it will fit to the drive bay of your 770X. However, some early models of the 770 s...

I changed the battery and it seems to be working ok right now, but I'm still not sold that it was the root of the problem. When I changed the battery, it took a good 4-5 tries to get the computer to power up (would keep coming on for a few seconds then shutting down), and the power management is sti...

Assuming the AC adapter itself works, either the battery is kaput or the charging circuit in your TP isn't working (will the computer work with it plugged in?)

Now it gets worse

Ok, this has become more serious...an hour ago it shut down and pretty much refused to power back up altogether (came on for a few seconds then shut right back off). I took the CMOS battery out, tested it (2.8V) and reseated it. Got the unit to come back on again (reset time/date screen), fixed that...

770X power problem?

I usually run my 770 with the battery partially ejected (but in the holder), so it'll run on AC only and not needlessly put wear on the battery. Once last night, and just now (a few minutes ago), the unit unexpectedly dropped into hibernation and wouldn't power back on again (for more than a few sec...

The pin jumper setup that controls whether a drive is marked as "Master", "Slave", or "Cable-Select" is sometimes slightly different from one drive to the next, but that is beside the IDE connector pins, not part of it. That's where my concern lies...the jumper pins ARE a part of the IDE connector ...

I'm assuming the cable pinout (where it attaches to the drive) is universal (at least amongst notebook drives) and not something proprietary to the Travelstar drives, correct?

770X HD upgrade questions

I may have an 80 gig notebook HD available to me soon (no, not the $34.50 one :P ) and have a couple of questions regarding how to go about replacing the one I already have in my 770X (8.1GB, I think) (1) Will any notebook form HD work in the 770 or will only certain brands work? (2) I know that you...

The SR8171/05K9066 DVD drive (M a t s u s h i t a) is one of the more "standard" casings that you can probably swap something else into (best to look for a replacement drive that's slot loading if possible as the drawer bezel won't fit)

It seems odd how the drive CAN read (most) DVD movies (including "burned" discs), but DVD data discs you can forget about. Is there something in the disc's file system that's confusing the drive?

Unfortunately, the Fn+F8 combo doesn't work in XP and the "screen expansion" option in Thinkpad Configuration doesn't do anything either. The other issue with 1280x1024 is that (on the 770X, at least) you can only use 16 bit high color...32 bit color only works up to 1024x768 (which won't work full ...

That Panasonic drive Newegg has would be PERFECT if you have the 05K9066 you're willing to gut (even the dimensions are exactly the same).

Too bad I don't have the $75 lying around or I'd buy one. :(

Would the guts from the SR-8175 fit in the case of the SR-8171 (Pana 05K9066) or are they different form factor/sizes? Seems like the 8175 will read +R's and there's a couple on Fleabay relatively cheap so I'd be willing to try that if there's a chance for it to work.

770 DVD drive...can it load burned/copied DVDs (+/-R)?

I remember asking this on the "old" forum and nobody had a straight answer. Can the DVD drives on the 770s mount/load DVD +/- R(W)s? On some strange whim this morning, I stuck a burned (DVD+R) movie I made a while back in and the thing actually worked! I hadn't thought to try before as all t...
