For what it's worth, I had an 8-cell battery that sat around mostly unused for about a year. When I finally started to use it I also got less than 4 hours per charge (dim screen, wifi off).

I'm thinking of buying a secondhand T or R model, and would prefer to wipe the existing harddrive completely before I use it (basic paranoia).
