T420's palmrest in T420s?

Funny how the title worked out...

Anyway, I have a T420s with somewhat banged up palmrest (with FP reader).
Can I replace it with a palmrest from a regular T420 (with FP reader) or is there some incompatibility?

They look exactly the same when they are mounted.

T420s - randomly offing itself

I have a problemy with my T420s. First, it started randomly generating a signal as if the power button was pressed, so it gracefully shutdown at random occasions, but only when I was typing on the right side of the keyboard. I replaced the keyboard, but it did not change anything, so I just disabled...

X40 with non-working USB ports

I got two X40s with latest bios. The problem is, that one of them behaves like it has no USB ports at all. They cannot be selected as boot device in BIOS when there is a USB stick or ThinkPad USB DVD drive plugged in, neither do they function within OS. Linux lists 4 ports, but no device is being de...

"ME is in recovery state"

When I boot my T420s, I get the message "ME is in recovery state" right after the BIOS screen and before the boot process starts. Normally, I suppose there should be some info on Intel net boot.

How do I set this right, or - even better - disable this screen completely?

Re: Hardware flashing bricked T420s

Probably you've been scammed. Binary BIOS image can be obtained from the BIOS update package which is published on Lenovo website (there are tools for that). That's what they tried doing - they said their hardware programmer cuts the Lenovo file automatically to binary size, but for some reason fla...

Re: Docking station and the Ethernet port

Yes, I meant CardBus, indeed. The accounts of PCMCIA/CardBus being superior to USB NICs you can find all over pfSense forums. And I would imagine they know their stuff. Interestingly, on those forums, ExpressCard NICs are considered inferior to CardBus NICs, too. Might be a FreeBSD specific environm...

Re: Docking station and the Ethernet port

If there is no dock option, I will have to resort to a PCMCIA ethernet card. Which is going to be worse than USB. :) Care to elaborate? By all accounts I have found over the last few years, PCMCIA is incomparably superior to USB as far as ethernet NICs go (also eSATA and other uses, but that's not ...

Beeping 3-1-1-3 means: Detect and install external RS232 ports. Unlikely on a T420s, but you never know how the BIOS was "unlocked". Have you tried booting from a regular BIOS-update CD? Or... T420s does NOT come with a fin in this particular USB port. Here's why I think it might be so: 1. I used very little force when probing for a whole with the headphone jack. Certainly not enough to brake a plastic fin. I also did not hear nor feel any breaking action occur. 2. I looked inside t...

I think I have a problem. Tried plugging in headphones to the headphone jack in my T420s. It was dark, so I “plugged” it in to the USB post right nest to it. There was a spark. Now, USB stick plugged into it is not being detected.

I am guessing it it burnt. What can I do about it?
