Creating a Windows 7 install disc?
Hi all, I recently bought a new lenovo, but I want to do a clean install (goodbye bloatware). I've noticed that, not surprisingly, there is no windows 7 installation disc included with the new computer. Is it possible to create an install disc from windows 7 itself? If so, how do I go about this? Th...

X61 fan running very noisy and with rattle/rumble on high
I'm no expert, but it sure sounds like my fan is on its last legs. I bought the x61 new in July 2008 and while the fan was always somewhat loud, it seemed pretty normal compared to the size/speed of the machine. In the last month or two, however, the fan has gotten louder and louder. Additionally, a...

Re: 513 MB Disk...what is it? Turbo Memory?(+ merge partitions)
That's your ReadyDrive memory. So, if I understand ReadyDrive correctly (and Wikipedia is fairly accurate), this is related to my Turbo Memory. So, back to my more basic question. Is it possible to screw this up? Is it a physically distinct disk from the hard drive or is it just a virtual distincti...

Re: 513 MB Disk...what is it? Turbo Memory?(+ merge partitions)
Right-click on "Disk 0", choose "Properties"...? On the properties screen, it says, "IMD-0 Device type: disk drives Manufacturer: (Standard disk drives) Location: 0(0)" Under the volumes tab, it says, "Disk: Disk 0 Type: Basic Status: Online Partition Style: Master Boot Record (MBR) Capacity: 513 M...

513 MB Disk...what is it? Turbo Memory?(+ merge partitions)
After restoring my x61 to factory state using the service partition, I burned the DVDs so as to be able to do so in future as well, and decided to delete the partition. I used diskpart to delete it and attempted to install windows 7 on the whole drive. I obviously failed at this and am still trying ...

Re: Reinstalling Vista/recovery CDs
Sounds good. So I should install as an update rather than fresh and it'll do that.Marin85 wrote:Yup, provided the hidden partition is intact after installing Win 7.
Thanks for the help guys!

Re: Reinstalling Vista/recovery CDs
So, to clarify, let's say I installed Win 7. For some reason, it just never worked right and I decided I wanted to go back to Vista. I could reboot the computer, go into the rescue and recovery screen, click on restore to factory configuration, and it would wipe the computer back to how it came ship...

Re: Reinstalling Vista/recovery CDs
No, see here http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?sitestyle=lenovo&lndocid=MIGR-68317 Bill B. I've read that before, but how does the recovery partition differ from a recovery disk set made when one immediately gets the computer (before doing anything else)? I still don't understa...

Re: Reinstalling Vista/recovery CDs
Additionally, back in the day, when I bought several Gateways, they always came with the recovery CDs that included Windows.
I think Lenovo is full of it on this issue.

Re: Reinstalling Vista/recovery CDs
I recently thought about this thread again because I thought about beta testing Windows 7, so I figured I would post the relevant reply that Lenovo gave me when I emailed them about this: "Dear XXXXXX, Thank you for contacting Lenovo, the makers of ThinkPad and ThinkCentre products. Please note, tha...

A lot clearer already. I did not intend to denigrate anything you use. The Symantec product(s) I meant were those that come, or came, pre-installed on a Thinkpad as it is sold to consumers, not corporate machines. The most important of which is Norton AV. The original post as I read it asked which ...

@WFU03... if there is a part# on the disks, post them and we may be able to help you determine what you've got. On the "Rescue and Recovery CD" it says Disc 1 of 1, January 2007, CD P/N 43R4481. On the other CD, it says types #7673, 7674, 7675, 7676, 7678, 7679, 7666, 7667, 7668, 7669, 7670, 7661. ...

Reinstalling Vista/recovery CDs
I recently got a new x61 and I think I want to wipe it clean and do a clean install of Vista with none of the Lenovo bloatware. Additionally, I think I killed my wired internet settings when I had to connect to a university network the other day. I can't seem to connect to any other wired internet n...

New Thinkpad: What is YOUR must load software? Must delete?
While this post isn't complete curiousity (as I did just get a new X61), I am interested to know what you guys consider must load and must delete software. I imagine it will be at least 25 programs for most people and it might help everyone get some new software ideas. 8) The rules: you must start f...

Ordered 7/14 after the sales rep assured me that the x61 would get here on or before 7/25. I explained that I absolutely had to have the computer by 7/25 or else I would not be placing the order. *sigh* this has been discussed so many times before... it's a special 1.8" drive with the 2.5" (44 pin ide) connector attached on its side. size-wise, it's 1.8", connector-wise, it's 2.5". pull it out of the machine and compare to any other laptop hd you might have lying around, you'll see what i m...

OK...then is this site incorrect?
"Hard Drive: 1.8" 20GB, 30GB, 40GB or 60GB @ 4200RPM"
http://www.notebookreview.com/default.a ... inkPad+X41
Or am I just not understanding why you would have a 1.8" hard drive but need a 2.5" adapter?

I'd suggest that you don't use the laptop anymore! Remove the harddrive, put it into an external drive case and retrieve your most important files by hooking up external drive case to another computer. I'm not sure I know what products are needed to do this. Does anyone have any suggestions (and ho...

X61 with WWAN but not using AT&T or Verizon?
I'm curious as to the swapability of the preloaded AT&T or Verizon WWAN setups. I'm planning on moving to Europe for a few years and would not use either the AT&T or Verizon service before I go. If I get either one built in, can I insert a SIM from a provider in Europe once I get there or is the sys...

Has my X41 passed away?
Last night, I was surfing the web and clicked on a thread on a message board. The computer froze and I tried to ctrl-alt-delete and shutdown firefox, but no luck. It hung on the ctrl-alt-delete window. Then I forced it to shutdown by using the power button. When I turned it back on, before it could ...
