It was actually a mysterious firmware update (SMC v1.0) that alleviated the heat problems. I say mysterious because Apple listed the firmware with few details on what it does (supposedly fixes boot problems with BootCamp) but actually does more than that. The update has made the fan spin 100% of the...

I have Paralllels Workstation for OSX on my MBP (2GHz, 2GB RAM). It runs and feels like a Pentium 4 2.2GHz or AMD Athlon 2100+ (the only two slowish computers I have experience with) with 512MB RAM allocated to it. It's a lot faster than VirtualPC using a dual-core G5 PowerMac, and I'd say very acce...

From past experience (my old notebook was a 15" AL 1.67 PB), the 'slick' Suspend and Resume wasn't all that 'slick.' It's not all that slick on my MBP either. It wakes up instantly which is nice. But it takes a while to go to sleep, sometimes 15-20 seconds, longer than my T41. Twice, I've shut the ...

I did it! I just bought a MBP. I said I would wait, but I decided to take my chances. Also, for two days I monitored how often I used the right-mouse button, and it really wasn't a lot. So ctrl+click in OSX or Ctrl+Shift+F10 in XP wouldn't be too inconvenient. The first MBP I got was a "week 14" bui...

You basically just download the install DVD, burn it, boot the ThinkPad from CD, install it, and 20 minutes later you're running OSX. Driver support is nearly non-existent in my experience. No power management, no sleep, no wireless, no graphics driver, no advanced mouse features.....not really suit...

I just check ArsTechnica and Apple Discussions. Thanks for the valuable information. What is your plan? How long are you going to wait? I want one now, but I don't really need a laptop until the end of summer. So I'll wait until "Rev B" or until Apple releases a small 12-13" MBP if it has the same hardware as the 15" MBP. In Apple land, the sad ...

Thanks for clarifying! I will trek up yet again to the display piece and check this out too. The other thing you should do is check out several of the display models. There appears to me to be a lot of variation in the LCDs. Some of the displays at the store I go to (UTC in San Diego) are nice and ...

2. Someone was saying that the viewing angle is tiny, and even working with it standing up causes colour distortion. I beg to disagree, I did a near Pi radian walk-around, and the intensity/colour barely changed---eerily FlexiViewey. Vertical viewing angle is narrow, not horizontal (which is great)...

Also the MBP gets freakin HOT. I don't want my handy to be toasted even when the machine is idle(the bottom is even hotter). That's the one thing that I can't understand. At the Apple Store, there were a few 2GHz MBPs sitting next to each other on a table. I was playing around with one for 15 mins,...

As far as the viewing angle goes, who here will actually lay their laptop down flat? I think the viewing angles by the mac is more than ample for everyday use. It's not even that. On a few MBPs I've seen at the Apple Store, the vertical viewing angle is so narrow that when you look at it straight o...

So what resolution is it running at now? It still looks like 1280x1024 which seems to be the max setting for OSX on a PC. 1600x1200x32 on my R50p  If you can figure out how to get my T41 with Radeon 9000 to run at 1400x1050 with OSX 10.4.5 you'll keep me from going to the dark side. I can get...

There are two reasons why I would consider the MBP: (1) Dual-link DVI output. I have a 30" LCD at home and 24" LCD at work. I would love to use a laptop with either display. VGA output is poor on my T41. The MBP is the only laptop I am aware of that has DVI on the laptop itself. Moreover, it is dual...

Meh. I tried using FireFox but don't see what's so great about it. Biggest issue for me is that pages seem to load slow, whether real or perceived, because there's a icon place-holder for each image that is shown before the image is actually loaded, which is annoying. IE probably does have security ...

I'm not clear what errors you're getting when checking the C: drive (not the pre-desktop area), but there is a bug in which chkdsk will say after stage 3: Correcting errors in the Volume Bitmap. Windows found problems with the file system. Run CHKDSK with the /F... Running chkdsk /f on the next boot...

I've got that problem here. It was pretty severe when the laptop was new, happening all along the top and bottom 1 inch of the screen. It occurred during transitions from a red or white screen or text to a black. The LCD had no dead/stuck pixels, so I decided to keep it for the tiem being. But after...
