Re: Who still uses a IBM ThinkPad as their daily?

I was just about to make a topic asking if anyone uses a daily driver as old as mine when I saw this topic. My only computer is an R61. Despite the whole XP support issue, I see know reason to change. The machine is lean and handles everything I do very well. XP aside, it's not broken so why fix it?

Edit/Update:

Before anyone wastes any time on this, I did a reboot, and the clock speed is back to 2.4.

Re: Request for input on new heat related problem

Thanks again to both of you for your help, theterminator93 and Cigarguy. Here's an update. Last night, like a butcher, I took the unit apart and tried to remove some of the compound. To be honest, it didn't even look like there was enough there -- it was that thin -- but I still removed some, put it...

Re: Request for input on new heat related problem

Thanks for the great info, theterminator93. It gives me a lot to go on. The temperature problem can happen even with the core usage low. I'm starting to think I used too much of Arctic Silver; I used way more than a grain of rice. I think I'll start by taking it apart again and getting rid of some o...

Request for input on new heat related problem

I've replaced the fan on my R61 many times, whenever it has gotten noisy or failed. A few weeks ago I changed it again, because it had gotten loud and immediately started experiencing a problem I haven't seen before. This is the first time that I've re-used the original heat sink assembly and replac...

Re: Why don't certain Windows Updates "take"? (small pic)

Terrific info, Majestic. Thank you. I'm actually relieved that others have complained about these before. I thought it was only me and that some virus (or worse) was preventing me from getting the updates. One thing I did notice about one of them (forget which one). When I expand it to look at its d...

Why don't certain Windows Updates "take"? (small pic)

Whenever I've updated Windows XP on my ThinkPad, consistently there have been two updates that have successfully installed (with the rest of any updates) yet are still there as available updates after I restart the computer and run Windows Update again. Lately it has become three updates that don't ...

Re: I am a traitor and I love it

I'm excited that you're excited about this Dell. What you're saying is familiar to me because that's how I felt about my R61 when I got it and still do now. Yes, my R61 has lots of wear and tear on it, but it still seems to suit my everyday needs, and I'm able to tinker with it and do a host of repa...

I'm not turning down the AC; I'm turning it up to maximum. I couldn't care less about reducing my "carbon footprint," being "green," or doing anything else to worship at the altar of this false god, the environment. In less than one hundred years I'll be dead.

Re: Virgin Mobile Overdrive Pro 3G/4G review

I believe that WiMAX was Sprint's first attempt at "4G" technology. Much slower than current 4G systems and even some of today's 3G. That's why it's being phased out in favor of LTE. For the uses that I need it for, even Sprint's 3G system is okay for the $35/month I'm paying for it. Is there any o...

Re: T61 falling apart - what now ?

Hmmmm. I have an R61. The case is a bit beat -- I've given it regular hard use in my vehicle -- but it's still reliable. I've replaced the fan three or four times, and I had a broken hinge, too (replaced the set of hinges this year). I think I got this computer back in '07 or '08, so I'd consider it...

Re: Your favorite Thinkpad

I came to the ThinkPad by virtue of my Lenovo 3000N100. I handed the 3000N100 down to someone else in my household, and went all out with my R61, my daily driver (also my only computer). Therefore, I guess my R61 is my favorite ThinkPad. I think I maxxed it out pretty nicely (processor, higher speed...

My cell phone is by many peoples' standards a "caveman phone." I'm on old school BlackBerry (Bold 9650 - Sprint). Numerology "Here is wisdom ... "

An interesting calculation -- Assign a multiple of six to every letter of the alphabet starting with A=6, B=12, C=18, and so forth. Then add up the numbers for the letters that spell the word "computer," and what do you get? C+O+M+P+U+T+E+R = 18+90+78+96+126+120+30+108 = 666  Uncanny. Haven't t...

Re: Border Security

It's absurd to believe that a United States which is capable of invading several countries that are 10,000 miles away practically overnight has logistics and cost problems securing its southern border. No, the truth is that it's the policy of the US government to allow illegal aliens in.

It was time again (changed another fan)

This is the third (maybe fourth) time. My R61's fan was getting a bit noisy, so I ordered a new one on Amazon. It came today, and I changed it out. All is quiet again. I normally order the entire assembly with the heat sink and all, and I did that again this time, but this time around I also ordered...

Yes, but I want to use the option that you have the keep pressure on the trackpoint if you want to keep scrolling. I'm the sole user of my ThinkPad(s), so I don't even have another account on them. :( You have to enable "Standard" scrolling in UltraNav settings. Control Panel>Printers and Other Har...

I make about five 3 GB encrypted containers using TrueCrypt. I store all the data I want to backup from my hard drive inside these containers. In my experience, it's the setting like Ray said. I use the second one you show with the round symbol that shows up when I press the middle button. With it I can just scroll up and down fast on a web page using the trackpoint. I also close tabs by clicking on the tab I want to close with the middle ...

Re: Unmountable Boot Drive Error - Should replace my hdd?

Well, no good news to report. I obtained an XP recovery disk from Amazon and just tried to run it. It gets to the part (after pressing any key to load from disc) where it loads a bunch of Windows files, but then it immediately goes to a BSOD: disable bios memory options such as caching or shadowing ...
