Re: Where do I put my screws?

RBS is not saying "Hmmm..." he is saying "Hardware Maintenance Manual." Which is here: https://thinkpads.com/support/hmm/thinkpad-hmm.html Having recently disassembled my T61 to replace a broken LCD mag frame and carefully taking photo's of all my steps but relying on HMM manual to cover my oversig...

Re: Need suggestion for broken lcd frame

I'm sure someone around here has a T61 lid without LCD in decent shape and ready to go for not much money. Try posting a WTB (want to buy) ad in the Marketplace and take it from there. Good luck. Thank you, I found a frame on eBay and after soaking my hinges for a week I have it all back together a...

Re: middleton question

Take the hinges off and soak them in marvel mystery oil or just plain old oil if that's all you have around. Soak them for a couple days and hopefully that will free them up. Thanks again, did this, soaking for about a week. It did help. It appears as if there was old dried grease around the pin. T...

Re: middleton question

Great info, thanks. I have sourced a new frame on eBay (thanks RBS) and looked at hinges. There are both used hinges (USA) and new offerings from China. Have read poor things about China new hinges. For the price of frame & hinges I’m starting to ponder just getting a used top end off eBay. But I fe...

Re: WTB: Frame for 15.4" T61 LCD

Here's one brand new: https://www.ebay.com/itm/282493367066 Thanks. That's a great find. I didn't see that last night, mostly just entire top kits. I pulled my R hinge and it is very tight. I cannot move it by hand, I have to use a vice & pliers to get it to budge just a bit. So now I think I need ...

WTB: Frame for 15.4" T61 LCD

NO LONGER NEEDED My cage, frame, or whatever it is called that the LCD mount onto is cracked at the hinge: https://imgur.com/a/8iDrR3l I'm looking for the frame only (with or w/o hinges). My LCD is fine (at least it was when I started taking the machine apart  Again, this is for the 15.4" wide...

Need suggestion for broken lcd frame

Referring to prior posts regarding my 'broken hinge' https://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.php?f=29&t=126795#p821781 . What I found is it is NOT a bad hinge but a cracked backframe of the lcd panel. I am referring to the frame that you see once you remove the top piece of the T61 lid (cover). The fr...

Re: middleton question

BTW: you can run 64-bit OS any time, with or without M's BIOS. I never wouldda guessed that my T61 could run 64bit. Have linux Debian x64 running now and as soon as I find time I've gotta tackle the hinge issue (spray lube didn't work). Hopefully once I get it out maybe I can free it up manually & ...

Re: What can I do w/ my T61?

Obviously, this is not a problem for those running Linux, just wanted to point out the issue since I just had to deal with it on my T61p. Great, thanks. I'll try to install debian x64 over my x32 install and see if it works. I've downloaded Middleton but not yet installed it. I'll wait until I fix ...

Every T61/p is a 64-bit system, since all of them sport 64-bit capable CPUs.
Hmmm. I have a T61, not sure it is a T61/p
The CPU is Intel Core 2 Duo T9300 (2.5GHz 800MHz 6MBL2)

Re: What can I do w/ my T61?

I've been wondering what (if anything) I could do about these hinges :?: :??: :help: [/size] I have the opposite problem. Due to frozen hinge merely attempting to change the lid causes severe distortion of the bezel and it will probably crack the plastic if I continue. I'll be digging into it this ...

Really? I'll have to give that a shot. Didn't know that 32bit systems could do that. Thanks.

middleton question

My T61 has 3 partitions. XP, Linux, & the original Repair & Recovery My linux is 32bit and my plan is to install the middleton bios so I can run 64bit linux. However, I want to keep the XP partition. Will XP continue to run after updating the firmware to middleton? I just don't want any surprises. I...

Re: What can I do w/ my T61?

Great info in less than an hour! I don't know if I need BT but if so a dongle will work for my needs. My HD is 7200rpm 200gb w/ encryption and IIRC some other high end features that I've forgotten (impact resistance?). I'm on fence re: SSD. Middleton sounds like it's easy enough to do. What does an ...

What can I do w/ my T61?

Haven't used my T61 for several years. Pulled it out of basement and installed 32bit linux and found 1) a frozen hinge threatening to break the screen bezel and 2) 32bit linux is too old (lacking recent security updates) for my liking. Reading around here I see lots of interesting possibilities but ...

Read the HMM before you take the lid apart.
You could also try a minimal squirt of WD40.
Excellent. I was thinking of trying a spray lubricant but was not sure. I'll do this first.
THANKS

T61 hinge binding

I bought my T61 new about 11 yrs ago. I have NOT used it for about 5 yrs. Today I pulled it out and opened the lid, it was very stiff. Checking more carefully, the right hinge appears to be binding. When I move the lid the outside cover (don't know what to call this) pulls away slightly from the lcd...

Re: Irrepairable damage to battery occurring out of the blue?

I still don't quite "buy" that it goes from about 60% capacity to dead. Same problem here. This weekend my battery went from a working 3hr battery to zip. I ran it to about 6% on the meter before shutdowning down. Now it won't charge and shows 67% but is really 0. So I need a new battery, can anyon...

Re: T60 fingerprint reader: creeping loss of sensitivity

I have similar problems with my T61. All in all I'm fairly unsatisfied with the reader. That said, sometimes I find lightly licking my finger helps. I've had to 'refresh' my fingerprint every 3-5 months.
