Re: T42p GPU Thermal Compound

Thanks for all the reading tips. I cleaned off all the black gunk from the GPU and under the heat sink. When I dry fit the fan back onto the MB, it fits snugly over the GPU. There's a copper shim that fills the gap so it doesn't look like there is any room for a 2mm thermal pad, or even a 1mm. Is th...

T42p GPU Thermal Compound

I've just completed a GPU reflow on a T42p and noticed that the long fan covering the GPU has some hardened black material unlike the white thermal grease used on the CPU. Can anyone identify it or suggest a suitable replacement so that it can be reassembled?

R52 Powers up only with battery

It works fine otherwise. I've bypassed the rear power jack using a port replicator and swapped AC adapters - same problem. No charging lights appear when either jack is used.

While searching the forum, I've found similar problems on other models, but no real solutions. Any ideas?

Re: GUIDE: Reflow GPU fix - 56K WARNING!!!

I've just joined this very interesting thread. I have an assortment of T40 -T42 with classic GPU symptoms. Fortunately, my employer has a professional BGA rework station and a trained tech to operate. I would like to know if all Thinkpad T40-T43 with ATI GPU's use lead-free solder and what temperatu...

WTB or trade: R40 XPP restore disks.

Have A31, T43/R52 and T42/R51 if you'd like to swap.

I've had the battery, backup battery, and expansion RAM out, but not the onboard RAM. That too? Is that under the mainboard?

X20 doesn't power up - maybe?

I bought a X20 off a guy who said his HD died. He said the drive was making knocking sounds before it died altogether. So I assumed all this machine needed was a new HD. Before installing the replacement drive, I attempted to power up and inspect the BIOS settings. All the indicators light for a few...

FYI: All of the "p" models use the same disks as the original series, for which ever model you are looking for. (ie. T40/T40p, T41/T41p, etc... Do you know whether that applies for A31/A31p? The factory preload for A31p has additional aps to handle video capture which don't appear in the A31 versio...
