Re: MS Nightmare: Windows 7 deemed LESS secure than Vista

This "uncontrolled beta" is an incredibly smart move. They get feedback from the users, (probably surreptitiously as well as with their knowledge). Look at the technet forums and you'll see tons of posts that the MS staff can troll for data. There's always gonna be folks who decry every version of w...

Re: W7 Beta 7k+build on Thinkpad X41

surprisingly the divx video player runs far better. I suspect that the xpdm drivers have some sort of failure to properly integrate and execute code passed by wmp using dx11. anything that runs its own internal codecs seems to run tons better. I've heard good things about VLC so some of you may wish...

Re: add bluetooth on x41

you have to replace the internal card with the correct ibm replacement i believe. IBM Partnumbers ■IBM FRU PN: 39T0022 ($37.50 in July 2005) - no longer available at IBM ■IBM FRU PN: 39T0024 ($49.00 in September 2005) - no longer available at IBM ■IBM FRU PN: 39T0026 ($56 in Dec 2006, $50.00 in July...

Re: Windows 7: what is your opinion/take?

w7 isnt just vista sp3. its been streamlined and extremely optimised for ram use. And the windows classic look is still in there for now.... i don't know if it will get pulled for RTM, but I use it right now. I still maintain that w7 is at least a good percentage ahead of XP for me in terms of every...

Re: Maximum memory on intel 915 chipset (X41)

the long and short is that the bios does not support more than 2gb of ram, (video card can eat a maximum of 128 mb), Technicaly the bios doesnt support more than 1.5gb, so when confronted with 2+.5 the bios "forgets" some of it. At least that the way it was explained to me.

i think MS has the same idea... my father didnt believe me when I told him about the beta.... He was convinced that MS would never abandon their ship then patch model.

you shouldnt have any problems with the 945 driver at all, only 915 and prior.

Re: Is Vista 7b stable enough for normal usage

the more you install the more unstable the system gets for me.... but running only a fe select apps seems to do the trick for me.... and I'me using it for work..... although I do backup 2 or 3 times daily.

i think the 945 chipset is in the clear on the hardware accel issue, anything prior is probably not.

Playing video locks up your system

Theres a problem with chipsets that only use the XDDM drivers.. and not WDDM This seems to be happening mostly to intel 915 chipsets and earlier. Video drivers Systems which use XDDM drivers may completely stop responding in certain scenarios. The computer will not respond to CTRL+ALT+DELETE and you...

Re: W7 Beta 7k+build on Thinkpad X41

Good call, I've seen some references to drivers provided by third party, and a bios update to other systems.... i wonder if its all related. If anyone has the old x41 bios they should check this out byt seeing if this is due to the new bios update for x41.

Re: Windows 7

I'm running side by side with mandrake on my X41t(in case I bork W7). I've found it to be fast, but have some issues, like the video acceleration is a no-go because the intel 910/915 is not well supported.

Re: W7 Beta 7k+build on Thinkpad X41

Fixed the video playing problem. Reducing hardware acceleration on the intel 915/910 series to th midpoint(no D3D accel) will let videos play. Of course this limits your other functionality, but this is a workaround till real drivers get released.

Re: W7 Beta 7k+build on Thinkpad X41

Thinkpad Access Connections is nto supported on this machine or OS, but the wireless is. The Video driver is completely Borked, as Intel never made a WDDM driver for vista, which W7b needs for backward compatability with DX11, and so you can not play back video of any type an even attempting to tran...

W7 Beta 7k+build on Thinkpad X41

Downloaded and installed W7B from MS and burned it to disk. Hooked up an external DVD Drive and installed. Install took about 30 Minutes. Not all drivers installed immediately. When attached to internet via cable updates included video driver, and audio. To get Intel PRO wireless running "manually" ...

Brilliant write up sir. I am completely confident in doing this to my machine now... especially since the HDD is failing. You and the supporters of this project should be commended for this work.

My original post had links to some batteries on ebay for about 25 and 36 bucks each... one used and one new, but the links were causing some issues. They can still be found easily though through the general search though.
