t42 and 4.1 speakers
i had a 4.1 speaker system connected to my t42 for a year and recently I noticed that there is no sound from the rear speakers (neither for music CD's nor standard windows sounds). I tested all the speakers and cables separately and they work fine when connected to the "front speakers" outlet on the...

T22 battery and power supply
My T22's hdd recently died and during replacement I was told that the batery was malfunctioning and may have caused the problem and was also damaging the motherboard. does this make sense? it was not the original ibm battery but one of those replacement units bought online. it seemed to work ok as f...

Very easy to change the logo on the System Properties page - simply add a bitmap named OEMLOGO.bmp to the Windows\System32 file. You can also add information - who to call when the system crashes (bit late by then...) etc. by adding another file OEMINFO.bmp to the same Windows\System32 If you mail ...

startup and harddisk passwords
probably an obvious question, but where can I find a simple step-by-step instruction on setting startup and harddisk passwords on a T42 and a T22? I also read somewhere that its possible to configure so you only need to enter them once per startup (ie, not to have to type the (same) password for sta...

finally the UltraTV has arrived and been installed with no problems (took me 10mins or so to fix the audio, specifying the microphone input for "live" and "record"). the TV tuner card works fine with T42 in battery mode @ 600MHz, although the instructions call for at least P-4 2.0GHz. One strange th...

CD-ROM speed applies to all cd drives? (inc external?)
I changed the CD-ROM speed from normal to silent as it (the built-in CDRW) was a bit noisy when playing music, and noticed the speed of an external DVD-RW also seemed to decrease, leading to longer burn times. Is this CD-ROM speed setting universal, and is there any way to set it differently for dif...

thanks Leon, just a clarification: I would need a cable from an existing "box" to the TV tuner card (ie, split the output from the box so that it goes to both the TV and the laptop), or I need to split the 'cable' cable so that 1 branch goes to the 'box'-TV and the other to the TVtuner card. This wo...

thanks Leon. I noticed a review onlne that mentioned that installation/configuring of this card is tricky (but product worked great after that). did you find the same? for viewing cable, would I need to just connect the 'cable' cable into the card, or would I need to prchase some extra hardware (eg,...

does anybody have any experience with these? PCMCIA or USB? This is likely a dumb question, but presumably I can also watch cable using such card, right?
thanks in advance!

finally got the replacement BigDisk as the original was defective (didnt format). Connecting via Lacie-FW800 card on the T42 PCMCIA slot I get 75MB/sec transfer rate (regardless of block size) measured using HD tach, which is great (although practical write speeds seems more like ~20MB/sec max when ...

i noticed that if I use the Lacie firewire 400/800 card WITHOUT the power adapter to connect to an external DVD burner (which has it own powersupply), WindowsMediaPlayer dies 10-20sec after starting to play Cd's. This hasnt occured (at least yet) when using the power adapter. Neither does the proble...

thanks JD, its becoming much clearer (and I got the file sharing working). 1) so i should be able to unplug DSL from the phone line and the network with the T22/T42 will still work (as long as the router is powered on), just as an 'intranet' without access to the www? Btw, should I worry about the m...

i am making some progress, but still need a bit of help... 1. As expected both the T42 and T22 have same IP except for last 3 digits. thanks again Ron, when you say 'neither could compete with a real video card' you mean a desktop-type video card installed in the dock II PCI slot? Incidentally, would there be any dock-based constraints on the performance of this card, eg, if I got a 256mb card? I presume in any case any slowness w...

wow - thanks for the very detailed info. I have tried maxivista and its a great cheap solution, which I will use in the interim. the only annoying thing is the need to have an actual cpu-box attached to the monitor (for obvious reasons, of course). for the moment i've found an old crappy celeron sma...

thanks for the clarification JD. I thought the term "wireless" was generically used for any communication without wires (including, eg, bluetooth), but it seems the term excludes bluetooth. Now, with the infrared transfer from a T22 to/from T42, how do I get started? Do I need to create some network...

does anybody have any experience with using these in a T42 (with Radeon9600)? wireless communication between T42 and T22
I am a bit confused about the difference between wifi vs wireless vs infrared vs bluetooth. In particular, I would like to wirelessly transfer files between a T42 (it has winXP, wireless and bluetooth) and T22 (win2000, judging from device manager, has infrared port). is this possible and how do I g...

wireless on T22 win2K: which wireless network?
The wireless on my T22-win2K runs fine as far as transmission goes. However, I have no indea/control over which wireless network is it actually connecting to (we have about 6-10 networks active at any time due to neighbours etc.). is it just win2k limitations or am i missing some drivers/softeware?
