Re: T440p storage question.

"depending on version" probably refers to M.2 slots newer than the T440p that use NVMe instead of SATA. An NVMe/PCIe x4 slot would have max speed of 32 Gbps. I don't think you can put more than 512 GB in the M.2 slot unless you use an extender cable to put the actual drive somewhere else. The slot i...

Re: Thinkpad T440p M.2 speeds

Is it better to get a regular 2.5 SSD for this machine or will the M.2 provide faster throughput? Theoretically, the M.2 should be faster, but as I said, I can't find any details. Not sure why you'd think it would be faster. M.2 does not equal NVMe. I don't think there were any NVMe laptops when T4...

OK- I know the original input is quite old, but have followed the link to the Lenovo Bios update and I cannot for the life of me see anywhere that it says that this Bios update allows the support of 16 gb of ram. Can someone or the person who posted the link please confirm that 16 gb is acceptable ...

Re: Install 16GB RAM on T510

W510 is actually a bit of an oddity. It has quad core and dual core models. The quad cores are Nehalem/Clarksfield, while the dual cores are Arrandale. The dual core model is basically a T510 with NVIDIA Quadro FX 880M and probably limited to 8GB like the T510, T410, and X201. Nehalem's MCH is evid...

I'm skeptical about some of the known good RAMs off the post you had suggested jdrou, just because the post was for a different model and the fact that I am already encountering inconsistencies here. I should probably make a post similar to that one specific for the T500s and their different varian...

Re: Win10 upgrade failed on both my X40 and T43p?

Win10 require some CPU features (Intel eXecute Disable XD) , but Dothan is supposed to have these unlike the earlier Banias core. Not ALL Dothan (although yours do seem to have it). Older Dothan chips don't have NX/XD (e.g. the 745 in my T42). I'd expect the T43p at least to work since others repor...

True and false. X201 is also available with i7. (My X201 came with i7-620M.) I'm going to take a guess regarding your second question. You may be thinking that i7=quad-core which is not always the case in mobile processors. i7 just means higher-tier than i5. 1st gen mobile quad-cores are 'Clarkfield...

Re: What is the purpose of the light in the top bezel of the ThinkPad T400?

To be fair, sometimes the light is so dim it barely lights up the kbd. It was sort of ahead of its time; we've got brighter LEDs available now. I've been saying for years that pretty much anything that has a battery should have an LED light of some sort, given the battery is generally the largest &...

Thanks. I think bigger W is more future proof and usable. Does the T61 laptop limit the usable wattage to max.90W and excess W is kind of "reserve" ? Is there a list of different charger variations ? For example in ebay there are different variations for 90W newer and older designs. The 'newer' 90W...

Personally I've never used the "Homegroup" feature.
I always set my home network type as "work" instead of "home" in Windows 7 and managed shares/permissions myself.
Note MS has apparently removed Homegroup in latest version of Windows 10.

I suggest you buy a Toshiba KBG30ZMT512G, it is the original M.2 SSD of T480.
Do you have a source for buying that? AFAICS it's not available through any normal channels.

Re: Certified X200/X201 2x4GB Memory Sticks

While this is true, my understanding of computer architecture is real RAM communication is not done necessarily through the FSB of the CPU, as opposed to the Northbridge Chipset controller on the motherboard (for Intel systems, I believe any AMD system is indeed CPU FSB limited). Does this still me...

While USB 3.0 drivers is probably an issue it also seems to be true that most UEFI firmware only supports 64-bit OS. If the BIOS doesn't allow you to revert to legacy mode you won't be able to install 32-bit OS. In legacy mode you'd still run into the USB driver issue though if the system has no USB...

Re: Dell D$20 vs. X6x

Compared with X60 (same generation) D420 would have lower CPU performance because of ULV processor and it uses a 1.8" PATA drive which limits your storage options. 1.8" spinning drives are normally only 4200rpm. X60 uses far more common 2.5" SATA drives. X61 would be even more powerful with 64-bit C...

Yeah, some of those terms are annoying.
I don't understand why carriers don't want you using large amounts of data when you're paying by the GB. As long as the network is not congested it seems like they should encourage heavy use.

Yes unfortunately this formfactor seems to be ignored by the tier-1 manufacturers so the few companies that do make them can charge a lot more (and the smaller drives tend to be more expensive per GB too).
