Re: T460p ssd configuration options

You have the 2.5" x 9.5mm SATA drive bay and the M.2 2242 SATA slot. The M.2 slot can take a max 512 GB drive and unfortunately no top-tier brands make drives in that form factor. Best available is probably Transcend; slower than big names but probably not enough to notice. As dr_st said, a 1 TB 2.5...

The xx40 Thinkpads need the Transcend MTS400 Series drives, NOT the MTS420 Series, which have a RAID-engine. The MTS400 works there without problems, e.g. this one: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B075P1JSGL/ref=twister_B07QHQ5QVF?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1 I believe MTS420S has now been reported to work in T4...

New option now available: Transcend MT430S
Basically same as MT420S except it has DRAM cache, higher speed rating, and is available in 512GB capacity. Also seems to be lower cost (only $80 for 512GB on Amazon).

Blame Micro$haft's W10, because it doesn't fully switch off when you shut down. Unless you fix it in the power options. NGFF "Next Generation Form Factor" is just what they called the M.2 slot before it was standardized and some places still use it as a keyword for searches.

I don't have a 210 but as general advice you'd almost certainly never notice the memory latency difference in actual use. I'd avoid the Timetec/Dataram but Crucial should be fine.
If you can afford it and just want to know you have the fastest then sure get the HyperX.

Thinkpad 600, 600E, and 600X all use the same 440BX chipset so I'd expect any drive limits to be the same between them. I've had 12 GB drive in a 600E and 60 GB in a 600X with no problems.

The XPS 13 had a nominally faster CPU (with basically same GPU as the SP4) but in practice it was consistently slower because of thermal throttling. With a small external fan the SP4 never throt...

I would have expected the MTS420 to work; that's a SATA drive (3D NAND version of the MTS400 I have).
Might have some other problem than a bad/wrong drive. Maybe the M.2 slot is damaged or something.
Does the laptop work fine with nothing in the slot?

Sounds like maybe there's some issue where they can't or don't want to offer nVidia graphics with Gen8 CPUs in Europe, the Middle East and Africa so they came up with a Gen7 option for that region.
Or it's just a lower-cost option even compared to a Gen8 i3.

If you are more concerned with capacity than performance you could put a 4 TB SATA SSD in the main bay. The M.2 2280 slot is an adapter in the 7mm 2.5" drive bay. I believe that the 2242 slot may have better theoretical performance than than the 2280 slot. From what I've read it sounds like the 2242...

No it will not. There's a boatload of proprietary software where the compatibility was broken either in W8.x or W10.
Not to mention the fact that Win10 is locked out from CPUs that don't have specific features not required by Win2k or XP.

"depending on version" probably refers to M.2 slots newer than the T440p that use NVMe instead of SATA. An NVMe/PCIe x4 slot would have max speed of 32 Gbps. I don't think you can put more than 512 GB in the M.2 slot unless you use an extender cable to put the actual drive somewhere else. The slot i...
