Re: Mobile data as main source of internet questions

And tethering is a huge "no-no". I've had no issues with USB tethering/hotspot use from T-Mobile or Verizon in the last few years. Also have a MetroPCS phone I regularly use as a hotspot. I used a Verizon pre-paid tablet plan as my home internet for a couple of years. Certainly some plans from vari...

"Running DirectX 11" doesn't mean having access to DX11 features. Same is true of DirectX 12. If you are running Windows 7 (or the right updates on Vista) you have DX11. The GPU in the X201 supports feature level 10_1 I believe. https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/windows/desktop/ff476876%28v=v...

Is this the service described only as "Lenovo PM service" is the msconfig list of services? Manufacturer is shown as Lenovo, as opposed to the "Power Manager" shown to be from Microsoft.
It's shown as just "Power Manager Service" when running.

IMHO, just IMHO, the obsession over aspect ratio (Not 16:9!!! Please Oh God not 16:9!!! Anything but 16:9!!!) in this thread has gone beyond lunacy. :??: Personally I don't care much about ratio, just vertical pixels. Anything less than 1000 feels cramped. 1280x1024, 1400x1050, 1680x1050, 1920x1080...

I believe Intel only supports 2x4GB on the 1st generation Core however quad-core workstations like W701 or Precision M6500 can use 4x8GB (and this was a shipped config from Dell at least). Note the dual-core versions can apparently only use 2x4GB @533MHz like the X201. I've tested a number of module...

indeed I sorely wish there was a Thinkpad in the "X" series which had a "UM" ("ultra low power") i7 CPU, but it seems no such beast exists.
All the newer X-series (starting with X240) use only "UM"-equivalent CPU (15W TDP). 25W-35W are not even options.

As a related question, why would a manufacturer put NAND on a hard drive to speed up read write time and then reduce the speed that the hard drive spins from 7200 rpm to 5400 rpm? Seems at cross-purposes to me. Presumably they think that the large cache makes the speed of the underlying spinning di...

Well, the only advantages the X201 really has are screen resolution being 16:10 rather than 16:9 (and slightly more vertical pixels) and that it can take a 9.5mm drive rather than only 7mm. X220 has better CPU/GPU and optional USB 3.0, optional IPS screen, faster & higher-capacity memory, mSATA slot...

In the strictest sense I don't think anything like that exists. I think the general consensus is that the best way to get an SSD in a PATA machine is by using either PATA-mSATA adapber, PATA-M.2 SATA adapter, or PATA-CompactFlash adapter. The generally-available PATA SSDs are not well-regarded and I...

The X220 is . . . one of the last with a full-power cpu --- it's faster than many later laptops. Yes, only with the current Kaby Lake have the 15W CPUs used by newer 12" laptops finally beat the Sandy Bridge 35W in terms of clock speed (by a good margin too). The newer CPUs do supposedly do more wo...

ODDs will be gone everywhere soon. There are only three systems left in the Thinkpad lineup, L570, E570 (so 15" budget) and P71. Probably. Even 17" Precision has no ODD. They are rare enough that there are specific web reviews of 'laptops that still have optical drives in 2017'. Having an extra 2.5...

No Ultrabay / Wired LAN? I guess even that would not be a deal breaker.
Ultrabay is probably gone for anything less than 15" screen. Wouldn't surprise me if that happened to LAN soon as well; seems like manufacturers have decided anything less than 15" should be an "Ultrabook".

Lightest laptop I've traveled with is the Surface Pro 4 at around 2.5 lb. including keyboard and stylus. I think Vista updates aren't available anymore. We can relish in the fact that Vista lasted so long for one of the worst MS OS releases. I'd probably put most versions of consumer Windows prior to 2000 above Vista (with SP2) as 'worst' (starting with ME of course). It certainly had one of the worst...

It looks like the newer modules are rated at a higher clock speed but also higher latency (i.e. slower timings). Possibly the latency doesn't drop enough to meet the laptop's requirements when they are run at slower speeds (usually determined by values stored in SPD chip on modules).
