Re: What Disk Imaging Program Do You Use in the Windows 10 Era?

Here are several possibilities, I have not examined them. (I may just license a newer version of True Image, as the program was good in general, first I’ll review lists of changes and read threads I found plus more of Grover’s articles. www.acronis.com Still available. Some users had problems using ...

Re: What Disk Imaging Program Do You Use in the Windows 10 Era?

I dug out old info on disk cloning/imaging/backup software and verified links I will provide below. General information is in: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Disk_cloning https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_disk_cloning_software Expert TIH user Grover has guides, such as at: https://forum.acr...

Re: T510 Why so many refurbished on market

London Drugs chain in western Canada is still flogging T410, $280 with Windows 10 Home. BC Surplus (British Columbia government) has various T and x models, no HDD, coa/licence on them is Windows 7Pro. $250. or less. My concern with them is getting IBM features if the model was never delivered with ...

Re: Time to buy thinkpad, which one?

"s" at the end means the slimline model, usually at the cost of expansion or connectivity ports."

Ah, thankyou!

Good for portability - USB pots for on the road, docking or equivalent adapter for desk.

Re: What Disk Imaging Program Do You Use in the Windows 10 Era?

True Image Image 2013 had very good features, but a defect that prevented test restore to an HDD of less capacity than the one imaged. IIRC cause appeared to be a meta value put in the image which mis-represented the image size by giving a value well above the actual space used as verified by anothe...

Re: Time to buy thinkpad, which one?

Certainly could use a good comparison table, which may be somewhere on Lenovo's churned-never-better web site. Some may have limitations on HDD/SSD upgrade. X1 carbon models sound great, iterated through seven generations or more, but OOOH the price. OTOH E390 is much lower price than T series and X...

Re: Any good newer thinkpads? Time to replace my T530

Certainly could use a good comparison table, which may be somewhere on Lenovo's churned-never-better web site. Beware that some recent models have fixed RAM such as 8GB, no easy upgrade. Some have half soldered and a module slot, as some older Thnkpads had. And may have limitations on HDD/SSD upgrad...

Re: T510 Why so many refurbished on market

Indeed, old computers can be used as test mules, provided they are not connected to Internet and access is restricted (because much AV SW does not run on older os). One fool bureaucracy was claiming that engineering departments had two PCs per employee. Well of course the departments said, there are...

T510 Why so many refurbished on market

Nearing the end of 2018 there still are many refurbished T510s in stores and on the Internet.

OS offered range from Windows 7 Pro through Windows 10 Pro.

Seems to be an old design by now - why so many on the market?

Re: KingSpec SSD into x41

Beware there is a problem with BIOS not supporting AHCI mode needed to use TRIM in Windows 7. Without TRIM the SSD's empty space is under-represented in Windows, and thus in an image made for backup. At least some SSD technologies need to have Windows tell the drive that space from which files were ...

Re: Screwdrivers to work on x41 basic model

I uploaded a photo of the three types sizes with a P00 and a P000 beside them, http://www.keithsketchley.com/x41lcdsc.jpg. You can readily see that the LCD screws have much thinner recess slots than the screws of same diameter but thicker head, and the larger black screws used to hold bottom corners...

Screwdrivers to work on x41 basic model

I have again confirmed the desirability of a P000 screwdriver for the side screws for the display rear cover, and other screws inside the LCD assembly, on a standard x41’s display assembly containing a Samsung LCD panel. The primary reason is that the screws have a very shallow head, thus the cross-...

Re: Tools to work on Thinkpad

Dunno why theorists kept claiming something without having their hands on what I have. The world is bigger and more varied than theorists like to think. As for screw length, a Dell manual gives the length of each screw by location, and basic size info. The pry kit is good, I have some of the long pl...

Re: Buying Windows 7.1 and Office 2010 Pro Plus

FTR, I was using Microsoft's new marketing numbering, as in Windows 8.1 which they use widely. (They are probably trying to get away from the stigma of blunt user feedback that Windows 8 original issue is not suitable UI for non-touch-screen use and is too radical a UI change for many experienced us...

Re: KingSpec SSD into x41

Speed of hard drive intensive functions is very fast, such as sfc (System File Checker) but Windows 7 annoyingly slow.
Windows 7 has good security features, very disappointing otherwise.

Re: Windows 7.1 in x41

Beware that the x41 standard model is limited by its video card. The DVD Maker software in Windows 7.1 will not run because it requires DirectX v9. (Why is a graphics feature needed? !) (The Aero look of Windows is not available due to the video card, but that is not a hardship.) I cannot find a Win...

Buying Windows 7.1 and Office 2010 Pro Plus

I purchased Windows 7.1 Pro from Tiger Direct, in packaged form. So far that has been satisfactory. Rather much money to spend on an x41 with its unreliability. KingSpec SSD into x41

My notes from successfully installing a Kingspec 128 GB 1.8” SSD into a standard x41, and installing Windows 7.1 Pro concurrently: Came with wrong screws – IBM ones are quite short and have correct diameter.
