Re: Lenovo boot diagnoastics recent

I can boot, with external display I can use the computer for now. The problem is the internal display is not working, Windows updates are a possible reason but it more appears the display system is simply not working. Lenovo downloads offer two utilities. One is UEFI to boot from CD or USB stick. Th...

Re: Time to buy thinkpad, which one?

Restating a general caution: Lenovo is changing models and features. For example, the x390 has a display almost as large as the T480's 14" (IIRC 13.9"). So given other features I purchased a T480 to replace my x41. (The x390 is the latest in the series the x41 was in, there are some other x numbers ...

Re: Time to buy thinkpad, which one?

Docks are pricey for current models of Thinkpad, heavily discounted if superceded - e.g. for T470 as T480 is different configuration. For T480 Lenovo sent to a slide--to-side fit, plug goes into a special USB-C or Thunderbolt port that will support USB-C accessories AFAIK. Earlier configurations wer...

Thankyou.

I'll keep that for the future, as I don't expect Safe mode would fix the display problem and I don't know if external display works in Safe Mode.

And the !! thing runs a looong disk check on cold startup unless you notice and stop it. Dunno the meaning of that with an M.2 SSD. So for now I have to get used to watching boot, which is very fast. It is short, perhaps 40mm whereas the main drive cage uses 80mm.

Re: KingSpec SSD into x41

T480 with "M.2 PCIe Gen 3 SSD on circuit board" is FAST compared to x4a with the Kingspec. (That's a recent new configuration, a Tower of Babel it seems, beware there is a SATA version of the 'on small circuit board' approach. They come in 40, 60, and 80 mm lengths - the T480 uses 80. It goes in a c...

And My Choice Software sales bunch are confusing, and Microsoft's Windows 10 activation system is awkward.

Unfortunately Lenovo will not sell office except with a computer purchase, I missed the option in the long list. (Best to save the list pages then read offline, then go back for purchase.)

Re: T480 advanced BIOS and KB matrix EC cracking - Some progress!

T480 certainly inferior keyboard to small x41, key feel worse, no protection for Caps Lock key (x41 key had depressed surface on right end next to A key).

Having a large caps Lock key is foolish as it is little used, but at least x41's was depressed on inboard half.

Re: T480 how to see BIOS setup

Confusion factors on the T480 with Windows10Pro include: - shutting down, the light in the power button does not go out until several seconds after the display goes blank. So you have to wait for light to go out (it flashes just before). - Function key commands are accessed by pressing F1 and the ke...

There is an option for Boot Display as internal LCD display or external monitor, it was set to internal, yet my computer now only shows external monitor on boot. Re: T480 how to see BIOS setup

Thankyou. Aha! I figured the POJ out. If command Restart instead of Shutdown can briefly see a prompt to press Enter to interrupt normal startup, below the red Lenovo box. That gives the traditional BIOS Setup display. (I have not played with normal cold boot enough to determine if that prompt flash...

T480 how to boot into Safe mode

Anyone know how to boot at T480 into Safe mode? Traditionally F8 or F12 gave that. Traditionally there's a boot process long enough to play with those keys, but this computer goes quickly through a red Lenovo box into Windows sign-in dialogue box. Bot is very fast on this machine, which has an M.2 S...

Lenovo boot diagnoastics recent

For making a bootable USB memory stick or CD, Lenovo has a UEFI file and a 'Windows' file, and seems to recommend use of the latter as newer. But their 'Windows' file has nothing to do with booting. Re: T480 how to see BIOS setup

Need is to troubleshoot blank display.
I have connected an external display.
The display switching menu appears to not recognize existence of an internal display.
It's been suggested that problems with Windows 10's August update might turn the display off in BIOS setup.

T480 how to see BIOS setup

- I can’t figure out how to get into view of BIOS settings nor Safe Mode nor boot options in my new T480.
-
- (Traditionally there is a prompt to press F1, but this computer flashes Lenovo red box then goes straight to Windows login dialogue box.
- Same for F12 despite UG/HMM claims.)

True Image Image 2013 had very good features, but a defect that prevented test restore to an HDD of less capacity than the one imaged. Re: Time to buy thinkpad, which one?

Certainly could use a good comparison table, which may be somewhere on Lenovo's churned-never-better web site. Some may have limitations on HDD/SSD upgrade. X1 carbon models sound great, iterated through seven generations or more, but OOOH the price. OTOH E390 is much lower price than T series and X...

Certainly could use a good comparison table, which may be somewhere on Lenovo's churned-never-better web site. Beware that some recent models have fixed RAM such as 8GB, no easy upgrade. Some have half soldered and a module slot, as some older Thnkpads had. And may have limitations on HDD/SSD upgrad...

Seems to be an old design by now - why so many on the market?
