Re: T61: On displays, durability, and dissuasion
I had a T61p with a 1920x1200 display. It's the dimmest display I've ever encountered - one of the reasons I've mostly switched to Dell laptops, which seem to have brighter screens.

Re: How to brick the fruit device easily
That date represents the reference date for unix-based systems. So I guess that some bunch of bits inside a Unix-derived operating system gets confused if you say that's the actual date. I don't feel like experimenting with my linux laptop to check if that's true!

Re: Info request for t61 upgrade
Replacing a mechanical hard drive by any SSD will give you a very noticeable increase in performance for boot up, program loading etc. The prices seem to be dropping almost daily. You can get a 120 GB SSD for $40 USD and up depending on brand, claimed read/write speed etc.

They can make use of 8 GB of RAM if you have a 64 bit operating system. If not, no go.

Its really strange that 2 x 4 GB DDR2 memory for a laptop typically seems to cost about $100 whereas the same configuration for a desktop is only about $15.

Re: T61 and non-brand memory
I've used generic 2 x 4 GB DDR2 pc2 5300 ram on both Dell Latitude D830s and Thinkpad T61s without any problems whatsoever. Whether or not you need 8GB of ram depends on what you use your computer for. If you want to make your computer really run faster, the easiest thing to do is replace a mechanic...

Re: Your favorite Linux distro on a Thinkpad? Why?
Interesting thread. I've been using unix-based operating systems since 1983 and linux since 1998 for both professional and personal use - I only use Windoz about 1% of the time - usually for administrivia related to my employer. Although I've used thinkpads in the past (mostly from the T6x line) at ...

Sold: Possible trade? 2x4GB DDR2 for 16GB DDR3 laptop memory
I have two matched pairs of generic no-name 8GB 2X4GB DDR2 667Mhz PC2-5300 memory. These have worked fine for a number of years in T61 laptops with absolutely no problems. I'm moving on from the T61 world and would be interested in trading each pair for 16 GB DDR3 PC3L 12800 1600MHz memory (L -> 1.3...

Re: T60 CPU upgrade with pre-installed Windows 7 Professional 32 bit
I wouldn't think its worth putting 64-bit anything on a T60 as I seem to recall that the motherboard / system can never see more than about 3.5 GB of memory anyway.

Sigh - it would appear that all the 4 GB modules that I have are the slightly slower 667MHz PC5300 variety.

Re: WTB: one module of 4GB DDR2 PC6400
4 GB DDR2 laptop memory modules are very expensive - they typically sell on ebay for $ 50 US dollars or more, So the memory in a laptop computer with 8 GB of 2x4GB memory may be worth more than the underlying machine itself - LOL And in fact I have a T61 with 8 GB of memory (2x4GB). However I'm not ...

The T61P can hold 2 x 4 GB memory, but its no use to you if you have a 32 bit OS. 64 bit linux sees 8 GB with no problems.

WTB: genuine lenovo hinges for T61 14" standard model
Has anyone got genuine lenovo hinges for a T61 14 inch 'standard' machine i.e. model 8889, 8895 etc available? I purchased some of those cheap chinese knockoffs on ebay but after installing them about two months ago the screen is already flopping around - grrr!!
