Oops! I spoke too soon. I started the laptop after coming home this evening and it reverted to the same problem. What a pain! I called IBM Tech Support and, after describing the problem, the rep said to remove and reinstall the hard drive. I did and the system booted perfectly. Go figure. BU...

It sounds like a video driver install went bad. Uninstall to remove the video driver. Reboot normally and you should get into Windows but will be using the default VGA adapter driver so your display may look crappy. Now go to IBM.com and manually download and install the corrrect video driver for y...

T42 Boot Problems
I had not been having startup problems until just recently. About two weeks ago, I used the auto software install utility to download the latest updates (don't remember which they were). Shortly after that, I started getting major boot problems. From a cold boot, I get a blue screen with a Stop erro...

Norton 2004 is driving me nuts!
I've had my T42 for a couple of weeks and have had more Norton crashes for different reasons than I can count. I don't know how many times I've uninstalled and reinstalled Norton...what a pain. I've followed Symantics instructions each and every time to the letter and it works for a couple of days a...

NewsGroups
I just subscribed to Direcway satellite internet service and discovered they don't provide any newsgroups. Are there any free quality newsgroup providers or do you have to pay to subscribe? If so, what do you suggest as a good provider?

Bad News!
I used the F11 at cold boot to get into Restore and Recovery. But, when it runs, I get a blue screen that says "STOP: c000021a {Fatal System Error} The Session Manager Initialization system process terminated unexpectedly with a status of 0xc000003a (0x00000000 0x00000000). The system has been shut ...

Thanks for the attention, guys. I do have the preload partition in place. Do I need to format the existing drive before trying to do a restore? If so, what is the procedure so I won't wipe the Recovery partition? Also, when I push the AccessIBM button during startup, it tries to take me to the Recov...

Need T42 Help - BADLY!
 I'm having lots of problems with my new T42. It has Windows startup problems, bluescreen system crashes, won't let me into Safe Mode. System Restore crashes when I try Access IBM button. When it finally boots, everything is extremely slow. Also, zillions of popups and IE auto starts. Can anyon...

Still Having T42 Startup Problems
I've downloaded most of the newest drivers from the IBM matrix and installed them. All the network cards and the modem now function. But, I'm still having the same boot error I had in my earlier post. The Thinkpad initial post screen comes up but when I press the Access button, it won't let me into ...

Yes, since this one has a 1 year warranty, it is probably a recertified machine. More than likely never used before. I downloaded the new Power Management driver and the machine booted first time. I'll test it some more because it seems to be an intermittent boot problem. I see the PXE-initializatio...

JD, it was sold to me by an eBay dealer as new...came in an IBM sealed box with nothing on the hard drive. Setup began to load at power on so I assume it's new. It certainly looks new cosmetically. Do you know how I can remove the current programs, clean the drive and run the initial setup again? I'...

New T42 w/problem - Need Help
I just received a new 2378xxg and ran the setup. It booted just fine but there were a few items (modem, network cards, etc.) that had the yellow asterisk in Device Manager. I tried installing drivers for them but only the modem was corrected. The next evening when I got home, I started the laptop an...

Balsam, are you running it on AC or on battery? If on battery, it might be that you don't have it set for high brightness in the Configuration Utility. Start it up and look at power management section, the display section and the LCD section. I've forgotten just where it is but I had a similar probl...

600E and 98SE Upgrade - Won't Boot
I have a 2645 4AU and flashed the BIOS to the latest with no problems. I then upgraded all the drivers from the website in preparation for installing 98SE. I ran the 98SE CD and everything appeared to load fine. But, when restarted the laptop, the ThinkPad post screen comes on and then it tries to g...
