Re: General Questions about x230 FHD mod, coreboot, ME cleaner, etc

Will this break any compatibility with anything? Not if done right, although this depends on the payload you choose and how you configure it. Will I really even notice it after booting? Aside from faster boots and fewer backdoors, probably not. ;) Will it affect my FHD mod? It shouldn't, although m...

Re: need thinkserver/thinkstatation reccomendations

I love Lenovo (and IBM's) case design, but I'd like to reiterate my recommendation for a DIY solution, particular if price is a concern. You don't have to buy new parts either; eBay is full of cheap, second-hand full ATX cases. Personally I'd go with a FreeNAS setup with one RAIDZ2 pool with: 8 GB R...

Re: need thinkserver/thinkstatation reccomendations

I've built quite a few storage servers, and I've got a couple tips: 1) Build your own. Thinkservers/Thinkstations look cool, but you'll get much better value from doing your own HW build. Personally I'd get a SuperMicro chassis (if you're doing a high budget build) or a desktop tower with lots of 5....

Re: Lenovo’s ThinkPad team would like to move to 3:2 right now but are having trouble finding suppliers

My guess is that the rest of that sentence is: "... that can provide screens at prices that won't send Fortune 500 CTOs running for the hills." The days of the $2000 laptop are over. If a 3:2 screen makes ThinkPads cost what the Surface Book Pro did, then it ain't gonna happen. Annoying for us enthu...

SOLD: X230 w/ IPS screen, 16 GB RAM, and Coreboot

For sale is my personal X230. It's got 16 GB of RAM, an IPS screen, and has been flashed with Coreboot (so no Intel ME backdoor ). I'm also including a dock an a power adapter. Cosmetically it's about 8.5/10. There is a small crack near the ExpressCard slot, that doesn't affect functionality, as wel...

but that's expected as there are lots of issues with it. Boy ain't that the truth. It really seems like Intel has been caught totally off guard here, and the first patches seem to be half-ass at best. I mean, I'm sure they work in the sense of closing the hole, but from what I've read there are som...

Re: What is the 14 inch, and 15.x inch sibling of x230?

The latest old-style 7-row keyboard can be found on the 14" T25 with FHD screen. But by now it's (almost?) completely sold out, but you might get lucky (if you can afford it). A few crop up on eBay with some regularity. Maybe they'll *not* be overpriced now that it's actually out in the wild... Oh,...

Re: BIOS update from Lenovo for Meltdown / Sceptre

If you're using Linux, you can always load microcode from userspace. I know Fedora packages microcode updates via the usual mechanism. Not sure about other distros (or, for that matter, other OSs. Maybe Windows and the BSDs support this somehow?) The benefit of this is that you're not dependent on L...

[WTB] LED upgrade for X61s

I'm not sure if this is the right place to post this, but it's the closest I could find. So without further ado... I'd like to get someone to do the LED upgrade on my beloved X61s. I have too many projects piling up, and all the space on my workbench is taken up with the components of an NFC-powered...

[WTB/WTT] X260 or X270 w/ FHD screen, trade for my killer X230

See title. ;) I'm looking for an X260 or X270 with the FHD screen. Ideally I'd also get 8+ GB of RAM and a 72 Whr battery, but if not then that's not a deal breaker. I don't need a charger or any other accessories, just the laptop. As far as price, that depends on what you have. I'm trying to upgrad...

Re: Lenovo CES 2018

Do not buy any X series if the memory is only 1 slot with no onboard memory. This will limit to single channel mode, needs dual channel mode (either onboard memory *with* memory slot memory module installed also, or two slots memory), to help with integrated GPU performance (important) and some peo...

Re: Lenovo CES 2018

I could hold out for a machine that will never happen again (7-row, 4:3 screen, etc.)... but if I'm not going to do that, the current and upcoming lineups both look fine. I'm not really a fan of the X280 from an industrial design standpoint, but spec-wise it's not bad. I'm still probably gonna go wi...

[FS] ThinkPad 600X for parts

For sale is a ThinkPad 600X with a 500 MHz CPU. The screen is 1024x768, but it's also some 16+ years old, so it's starting to dim a bit. Still bright enough to use once it's warmed up for a few seconds, but I can tell that the backlight is starting to tire a bit. It would be a good candidate for an ...

Re: Anyone else ditching the Thinkpad?!

As soon as another manufacturer consistently produces laptops with great keyboards, high levels of maintainability, a non-useless pointing stick, decent Linux support and does so in durable cases that look professional, I'll switch. But that's been my policy for the last 8 years, and I'm still using...

Easier to said that, except for many people does not have budget for SSD especially ongoing too high price problem. Re: Get a new Thinkpad?

@Boy2006 just put a hardware-encrypted SSD in T520. On side note, I personally prefer software encryption - if something happens with the laptop, accessing the data on another machine - or even in a USB enclosure - is not a problem. I'm going to second the recommendation to go with software. On mod...

Re: X230 Power Consumption with Coreboot

lspci still shows MEI, but it can be hidden via `echo 1 >/sys/bus/pci/devices/0000:00:16.0/remove`. IIRC the MEI controller will always show up. It's just that you can't actually talk to the ME once neutered. After BUP, the ME should be basically sitting there crashed. Now regarding power consumpti...

Re: RAM frequency vs. power consumption for Carolina idiots

I'm running coreboot, so yeah, it actually should handle higher clock speeds just fine. coreboot's RAM init will handle higher frequencies (and IIRC can even be made to ignore what it reads via SPD...)

But thank you, that answers my question nicely! :thumbs-UP:

Looking for a T400 in good physical condition for more coreboot hacking. Dead screen is OK (plan on replacing), dead battery is OK, no HDD required, any RAM is fine. Re: RAM frequency vs. power consumption for Carolina idiots

My thought is that for a given voltage you'll see more power draw and heat on the higher clock speeds, in much the same way you see that with CPU frequencies. It's probably negligible with RAM, but it's true... I've never seen it discussed or written about before! But that's not strictly true with ...

RAM frequency vs. power consumption for Carolina idiots

As I continue my journey down the path of hardware hacker, I'd like some help from someone who knows more about RAM than I do (which.... is probably most people!) Given a system with two channels of DDR3, is there an appreciable difference in power draw when populating them with modules that run at ...

Re: AC WiFi card to X230 (with modified BIOS flash)

If you don't mind opening up your laptop and flashing using a Raspberry Pi, you can flash coreboot onto the machine and then use whatever WLAN card you'd like. It's pretty simple to do if you're the careful, follows-instructions sort. :)

Re: X230 Power Consumption with Coreboot

* First of all me_cleaner. Some of ME's functions were saving power.
I don't think that's the case. IIRC once the ME is out of BUP, it's not doing anything that should affect the power consumption.

Did you neuter it by setting the HAP bit, or did you just remove modules?

Re: Thoughts on the T440 and T450 quality

My take after having owned a ton of random ThinkPads would be this: QC has declined since the "glory days" of the early 90s. My guess is because going from 7K to 1K per unit means that you can't have quite as an extensive QC process. That, and production is often not done in house anymore. This freq...
