Re: RAM frequency vs. power consumption for Carolina idiots

My thought is that for a given voltage you'll see more power draw and heat on the higher clock speeds, in much the same way you see that with CPU frequencies. It's probably negligible with RAM, but it's true... I've never seen it discussed or written about before! But that's not strictly true with ...

RAM frequency vs. power consumption for Carolina idiots

As I continue my journey down the path of hardware hacker, I'd like some help from someone who knows more about RAM than I do (which.... is probably most people!) Given a system with two channels of DDR3, is there an appreciable difference in power draw when populating them with modules that run at ...

Re: AC WiFi card to X230 (with modified BIOS flash)

If you don't mind opening up your laptop and flashing using a Raspberry Pi, you can flash coreboot onto the machine and then use whatever WLAN card you'd like. It's pretty simple to do if you're the careful, follows-instructions sort. :)

* First of all me_cleaner. Some of ME's functions were saving power.
I don't think that's the case. IIRC once the ME is out of BUP, it's not doing anything that should affect the power consumption.

Did you neuter it by setting the HAP bit, or did you just remove modules?

Re: Thoughts on the T440 and T450 quality

My take after having owned a ton of random ThinkPads would be this: QC has declined since the "glory days" of the early 90s. My guess is because going from 7K to 1K per unit means that you can't have quite as an extensive QC process. That, and production is often not done in house anymore. This freq...

[FOUND] X230 - local deadline to beat

I'm interested in doing some coreboot hacking and replacing my T470, so I find myself eyeing the X230. Now I have a local seller lined up with one for Friday, but I'm willing to call that off if I can get a better deal here. So without further ado, here's what I need: * X230 * IPS panel * decent phy...

FS: FREE ThinkPad T41

I've got a 14" ThinkPad T41 that I'm giving away. It's in great cosmetic shape (8.5/10) with a great keyboard, palmrest, case, etc. but there's one problem: The screen is wonky. Sometimes you boot it and the screen is dead. Other times it works but everything's this weird and gray-ish kinda inverted...

FS: FREE ThinkPad X40, X40 parts

I'm cleaning out my storage. I've got an X40 here in good cosmetic shape (7/10?). Powers to BIOS fine, but no drive and no drive door. Screen looks good, and keyboard works as best I can tell. No idea about other specs though. Also included: a spare keyboard. (Both the keyboard on the machine and th...

WTB: X220 w/ IPS, rest of specs don't matter

I'm Christmas shopping. If anyone has an X220 with an IPS display, I'm interested. I'm looking for one in excellent cosmetic condition with the IPS panel. Can't have any scratches or spots on the screen, but small scuffs/scratches on the case are acceptable. (But obviously the fewer the better...) A...

Re: WTT: ThinkPad X61s for X60(s)

Is the Coreboot boot-time of a few seconds really THAT important? It is if you want to get into BIOS-level development. I have a couple ideas for projects that I'd like to implement on top of Coreboot (well... Coreboot/SeaBIOS, but still). So... yes. ;) I mentioned the whitelist, etc. because that ...

I'm in the market for an X61s and I'm not having a lot of luck finding one. I could probably track down an X60(s) for a swap. Any specifics you would prefer if possible? Well the UltraLight screen is ideal, but no, past that not really. Coreboot means I don't have to deal with the BIOS whitelist, s...

Re: Is it time to leave Lenovo? Why stay loyal?

I would have to agree with the feel and touch of the new thinkpad keyboards. The island style one on my W530 has better feel than the one in a T420 I breifly owned, although it could have been due to a different keyboard manufacturer. However, it still did not match the feel or responsiveness as th...

Working with coreboot. The X61/T61 chipset isn't supported.

WTT: ThinkPad X61s for X60(s)

Anyone want a free upgrade? I'm interested in trading a ThinkPad X61s for a ThinkPad X60/X60s. It's got the standard LV processor, 4GB of RAM, no drive (you can keep your drive too), and an Intel WLAN card (I can't remember what I put in there, but it's at least a 5100). IIRC it's also got the BIOS ...

Re: Is it time to leave Lenovo? Why stay loyal?

That looks like an amazing machine: good CPU selection, seems sturdy, 2 RAM slots, IPS 1920x1020, mouse stick and fairly easy access to components. The downside seems to be that it is using a non-standard harddisk (maybe mSATA?). Also, I didn't find a description online of how to replace the keyboa...

Re: Is it time to leave Lenovo? Why stay loyal?

Why stay loyal? Well, I'm not a big fan of brand loyalty in general. That said, I keep buying Lenovo notebooks for a couple reasons. Specifically, that there are only a couple manufacturers that make subnotebooks/ultralights with pointing sticks. Of those, only Toshiba and Lenovo manage to make some...

Re: T430's WXGA++ vs R61's WXGA+

Well... there's variation between screen manufacturers, but in general I'd say that both laptops will have low-mid-range TN panels. i.e. OK for office work, etc. but useless for serious graphics work.

In person the new color is more like a very dark grey. The early ThinkPads weren't exactly jet black either. I have a 750cs, and I would not describe the exterior case as black... more like, uh, a very dark grey.i

Re: Anyone every try off-brand replacement hinges? Thoughts?

there are probably a thousand leaks in the supply chain from manufacturer to Lenovo.. They're not necessarily leaks. In some cases, they're "seconds" -- parts that didn't pass some form of QC or acceptance testing. In other cases it's just a case of "they ordered 15K, we built 16K and are selling t...

Pretty much what's in the title.

I want a ThinkPad X1 Carbon. It needs to be the first-generation one (the one with dedicated TrackPoint buttons.)

Let me know what you have, what condition it's in, and what you want for it.

Thanks!

Re: SSD for T430

For most uses, it's the latency, not the throughput where SSDs shine, so whether it's SATA II or III makes little practical difference. That and the performance under heavy concurrent workloads. Also, if you have the cash I'd go for the 840 Pro instead of the Evo. The Pro series has *much* better l...

Re: T440s First Impressions

Is the speed difference THAT much? The two are so far apart in terms of performance I'm struggling to think of a good comparison. It's like asking whether a jet is THAT much faster than walking... The big win for SSDs is that they tend to do well under heavy concurrent loads. In terms of sequential...

I've had good luck with Anker aftermarket batteries. They're a little better put-together than most of the generic eBay rubbish, and they're available on Amazon with Prime shipping.

AFAIK they only have a 6-cell for the X200(s)/X201(s), but that was good enough for me.
