Thx,
That would the the right clever test - if I had another machine of the type. :(

Re: T60p black screen right out of the clear blue

Thanks to RBS my venerable T60p is happily purring again. Got a Sharp LQ154M1LW02 off fleabay for the princely sum of 23 bux & installed it today. Really nice bright screen! Belated update: Screen was beautiful until I turned the machine off at the end of the day. When I turned it back on the next ...

I doubt it's worth it but if anybody has use for the original, in need of a new backlight, it's yours for shipping. I can most...

Re: T60p black screen right out of the clear blue

Did you READ my previous post? Oops! Guess I was so focused on the inverter at the time that I forgot completely that you'd suggested a couple of screen replacement options. Apologies & thanks. Any reason to prefer one over the other? Certainly good to know I don't have to wait for shipment across ...

Re: T60p black screen right out of the clear blue

Happened suddenly this morning with no warning whatsoever. No ghost image or anything, just a very black screen. Hooked up another monitor and everything appears normal there. Is this most likely an inverter or something disconnected or what? If I hold it just so when opening the lid to see the scr...

That all sounds like real good stuff. BTW, looks like I erred in typing the original subject line; the machine is a T60p.

Re: T61p black screen right out of the clear blue

Thx RBS,
No warnings of ccfl failure, so it sounds as though I should replace the inverter & if that doesn't do the trick, send it to James for backlight replacement.. That sound about right? Is James still around and doing this?

Re: T60 T61 fan lubrication - illustrated guide by msb0b inside

Yep. I don't pretend to any particular expertise, but with the Hardware Maintenance Manual in hand and an old egg carton as a screw organizer I don't recall any particular difficulties. An Arctic Silver kit for renewing the thermal paste is readily available and not at all expensive. I took the fan ...

Re: T60 T61 fan lubrication - illustrated guide by msb0b inside

My T60p is still going strong with a little synthetic atf having been applied to the fan quite some time back. It started to overheat a couple of months ago but has been just fine again after I blew some canned air through the fan inlet & outlet. Didn't get much dust, but I'm thinking something was ...

T42p available (otherwise goes to the recycler tomorrow!)

Anybody want to make worth my while to ship before it goes to the electronics recycler tomorrow morning? Probably best for parts as it has a marked tendency to overheat under at heavy use, won't recognize the network cards since I reinstalled XP preparatory to unloading it, and the right touchpad bu...

Display issue after fresh re-install of W7, T60p

Not sure of the nature of this issue, so I posted this over at the T6x board as well. I don't have any reason to suspect it's a hardware issue so this might be the better venue. Anyway, long story short, brand new installation of W7. I've installed and run System Update a couple of times. Yesterday,...

Re: T60p display issue

I'm not sure it's pertinent, but maybe I should also mention that I've modified the stock "balanced" power settings so that it never hibernates on its own either on battery or plugged in. And the issue so far has surfaced only with the laptop plugged in. I've not tried it to see whether the same thi...

T60p display issue

Long story short, brand new installation of W7, I've installed and run System Update a couple of times. ...IIRC, though, Win7Pro does allow for running Windows Virtual PC and Windows XP Mode. I've gone into the bios and enabled hardware-assisted virtualization. Re: T60p Windows upgrade questions

My only reason for wanting to install 64-bit was the vain hope that it might be a way around the 3GB limit on memory, but as that hope has been dashed it's really no longer an issue with me. IIRC, though, Win7Pro does allow for running Windows Virtual PC and Windows XP Mode. I've gone into the bios ...

Re: T60p Windows upgrade questions

Win 7 or 8 will work just fine on a higher spec T60. Being that yours is a T60p, it's definitely juiced up. All my T60 have 3 GB RAM, at least a T7200 and a SSD. It runs Win 7 32 bit very nicely for my needs (Internet and Office). Of all the Thinkpads that I have, the T60 generation is my all time ...

T60p Windows upgrade questions

I guess it's time to do something now that end of support for xp is nigh. I've a couple of what I hope are fairly specific questions and wouldn't mind at all hearing opinions as to the relative merits of 7 & 8 as relates to this old machine. First of all, a quick search didn't reveal anything about ...

Re: T60 T61 fan lubrication - illustrated guide by msb0b inside

Kudos for the illustrated guide. It sure was nice going into this for the first time to have some idea as to what to expect. I think the fan in my T60 differed a bit from the illustration, but after I figured out that the fan would lift right off the motor revealing the spindle and the hub in which ...

T42p weak audio

Since I had the machine apart to replace the power supply socket several months ago the sound volume has been very limited. Re: T42p overheats & shuts down

Joe: A quick question (from another avid T42p'er!): As I understand that you have ThinkPad Fan Control installed; have you noticed whether it is the CPU temp. or the GPU temp. that goes abruptly so abnormal high? [your post seem to indicate that it is the CPU temp., but I'm asking just to be sure!]...

T42p overheats & shuts down

Apologies if this isn't the proper venue for this issue. My old laptop has recently started to exhibit the subject behavior under at least a couple of circumstances. First was when running Disk Cleanup from Scheduled Tasks; I've found a workaround for that. More recently though after a number of upd...

Re: T42p, continuing charging saga

You can buy all new power sockets for ThinkPads, to fix the problem. You'll have to do some disassembly to replace it, but no soldering needed. Here is an example: http://www.ebay.com/itm/NEW-IBM-THINKPAD-T40-T41-T42-T43-R50-R51-R52-DC-POWER-JACK-CONNECTOR-WIRE-/261137463353?pt=Laptop_Adapters_Char...

Re: T42p, continuing charging saga

Hard to believe nobody's experienced this. Anyway, I used some Caig deoxit on the charger's connector and the socket in the T42p with a cut down toothpick for application and the tip of a shop towel for cleanup. Connection on might be marginally improved but I still get intermittent disconnects when...

T42p, continuing charging saga

Problem currently is with the socket into which the charger plugs. Unlike my T60p, the socket is loose in the case and appears to not make reliable contact with the outside connnector on the charger's plug. Upshot is that it's becoming increasingly difficult to maintain the connection when the charg...
