Thank you for that pointer. Disabling the touchpad in the BIOS does still disable the lower pair of buttons.

I've disabled the touchpad (via the UltraNav control panel plugin). However, this does not disable the left/right buttons below the touchpad. I've looked at all the "buttons" tab on the mouse control panel; there is no option there to affect which set of UltraNav mouse buttons are enabled. Any hints...
