2 beeps when booting up T60

I just tried powering on my T60, and I heard 2 beeps and then it powered off. I tried powering it on again, and everything is working fine. What were those 2 beeps about?

I have had occasional screen problems recently (totally black screen), so I'm not sure if it might be related to that.

Does the T60 use the same screws as the T61?

I ordered a pack of screws on Ebay advertised as being for the T60. I just got it and there are around 70 or so screws in the little bag, although there's a sticker on the bag that has "T61" handwritten on it. I just want to make sure they sent me the right item. Does the T61 use the same screws as ...

Re: Still get a "Fan error" after replacing fan

The cpu has a thermometer inside itself. The cpu will shut itself off when it reaches it's T Junction temperature, which is around 100 C. I run all of my thinkpads with the fan turned off. Having said that, the T60 with ATI graphics runs very hot (75-80C for temp4) with the fan off. Oh you do? Does...

Re: Still get a "Fan error" after replacing fan

I just tried pressing Esc on the Fan Error, and then it continued but quickly printed out "Fan Error" again. I pressed Esc again and it went into the Windows bootup. But then I didn't feel any air coming out of the vent anymore and I chickened out and did a hard power off for fear of damaging the CP...

What if I'm wrong and the fan isn't actually working, or if it stops working after I press ESC - could that cause any damage to the CPU?

Still get a "Fan error" after replacing fan

One day last week I came home to my T60 making a loud grinding noise. I shut it down, then tried to boot it up again, and got a "Fan error" message and it shut down. So I got a new MCF-210PAM05 fan, which is the correct type of fan for the T60 and installed it. When I turn on the computer, I can fee...

Would a CPU upgrade provide noticeable improvement?

I have a T60 with a T2500 2.0 GHz CPU and 3 GB of RAM. I have noticed a couple programs run slow, and I still have plenty of free RAM when they're running, so I'm wondering if a CPU upgrade would help. I've read the fastest CPU the T60 can take is the T7600 2.33 GHz. How significant of an upgrade is...

Antivirus GUI is very slow

I've just installed the latest version of Avira Free Antivirus on my T60 running XP, and it is very slow. Re: what happens when microsoft ends support for XP?

In addition to having an antivirus program and EMET, I would recommend installing some sort of program that lets you run your browsers and other internet programs in a sandbox or some kind of virtualized environment so that if malware gets through, it's trapped in the sandbox and can't actually touc...

Anyone know what this strange popup is?

I have seen this strange popup a couple times now on my Windows XP machine. Both times it has happened while logged into my Administrator account - it has never happened while logged into my limited user account. Also both times it just popped up by itself - I didn't do anything to cause it. http://...

Re: How thick is the gap between GPU & heatsink?

Final question which just came to mind: Does your CPU run in "balanced" or "adaptive" mode (and hence automatically throttling down the clock down to the lowest possible, when in idle mode), or have you perhaps set the CPU to run at "Maximum speed"? I have it set to maximum. (also: Do you have Powe...

Re: How thick is the gap between GPU & heatsink?

Thanks very much for sharing this highly interesting information! One question however: What model T60/p do you have? (what CPU, what GPU and what fan assembly?) I have a 2007-CTO with T2500 2.0 GHz CPU, X1400 128 MB GPU, and 41V9932 heatsink/fan. Compared to the idle temperatures of a T60 of mine ...

A few times now (since replacing my fan and putting in a copper shim) I have done a cold bootup of my T60, and when I log in, I check TPFanControl and it always reports the fan speed as 0 RPM for maybe 10 or 15 seconds before the fan finally starts moving. I have TPFanControl set to BIOS mode, so th...

Re: How thick is the gap between GPU & heatsink?

Got around to replacing the fan this weekend. The thermal pad between the GPU and heatsink is 1.0mm, with an indentation of about 0.4-0.5mm caused by the GPU, meaning the actual gap between the GPU and heatsink is 0.5-0.6mm. So I used a 0.5mm copper shim. I also used MX-2 thermal paste, which is one...

Re: How thick is the gap between GPU & heatsink?

If you do find a thick shim, then use it by all means. Bending the heat pipe is not an ideal solution. If you find out the correct thickness please do share it, as I'd like to re-do this without bending it. I just received the 5 different sized shims. They don't appear to be 100% flat, as they have...

OK I was able to get an ebay seller to sell me 5 different thicknesses of shims: 0.5mm, 0.55mm, 1.0mm, 1.2mm, and 1.5mm. Will take a few days for them to arrive. Looking at photos of the T60 internals, it seems there will be memory chips right next to the GPU core. These copper shims I ordered are 2...

Re: How thick is the gap between GPU & heatsink?

ThinkPadophile said the thickness doesn't matter much, since there are springs in the heatsink. I've never removed the heatsink, so I'm not familiar with how it all works. If the springs do compensate for various widths, then the thickness shouldn't matter. Then again, the fact that we need to use a...

Re: How thick is the gap between GPU & heatsink?

Thanks for the reply. I initially dismissed the idea of using a shim, since I thought the thickness would need to be exact. I thought if it was too thick, then trying to put the heatsink on might result in the GPU being (slightly) crushed. I also thought if it was too thin, then there might still be...

What if you only have 1mm thermal pads? Is it OK to just put 2 of them on top of each other, to effectively form a 2mm thermal pad?

At this point I don't suspect that it's actually a problem with the T60. I'm not getting any shocks touching the fingerprint reader right now, after being in fr...

A couple of times now today, I have placed my right hand onto the palmrest of my T60, and I got a bit of a static electricity shock when my hand touched the fingerprint reader. Every once in a while, the Wifi radio on my T60 will turn off. Toggling the hardware radio switch on the front only toggles the Bluetooth radio. Hitting Fn-F...

It's pretty easy. You need to remove the palm rest, keyboard, keyboard bezel, and then the fan/heatsink. Get some Arctic Silver thermal compound form Radio Shack and a new fan before you take the machine apart. There are hundreds of threads here that discuss this process and where to get fans, etc....
