Re: Which T series Gen to pick?

No, **20 series is Sandy Bridge, **30 is Ivy Bridge. **20 Thinkpads do not have an option to permanently disable AMT in BIOS, **30 series do. However, both model lines have many individual units with non-AMT motherboards, which do not have AMT to begin with (only consumer 1.5MB "defunct" ME firmwar...

Re: Which T series Gen to pick?

Some systems (like Ivy Bridge generation for example) allow AMT to be disabled permanently via the BIOS. Also, some of them come from the factory with non-AMT motherboards. Usually it means that there is some kind of defunct firmware there still, but it doesn't do hardly anything. That should be OK...

Re: Which T series Gen to pick?

If you don't care about performance or weight - then a T60. It's the last generation that had absolutely no ME to begin with. You can get 15" 4:3 IPS screens at SXGA+ (1400x1050) or UXGA (1600x1200) variants. Otherwise - kindly answer the following questions: 1) Do you have preferences for screen r...

Which T series Gen to pick?

I'm looking at picking up a used T series laptop. Mainly require two things.

1. IPS screen
2. Intel ME fully disabled (not just a gimicky disable)

which generation will be the right choice for me?

installed linux on the t42 with 64mb ati radeon chip. maxed ram and 128gb SSD, it flies. plus it is more secure than core series. not affected by intel ME backdoor and also now with patched kernel for meltdown the most secure machine i have . easily does 720p on ytube. easily handles 15 odd open tab...

im on ATI 9600 64mb ram with chromium installed on linux. it has full hardware acceleration and easily does 720p full screen on youtube in the browser. it even runs 1080p in the browser on YT but isnt as smooth. check your hardware acceleration using "chrome://gpu" in the address bar. Re: water spill touchpad killed t42

I had the issue of both trackpoint and Touchpad stops working from time to time in a T43 I've spilled water on a long time ago. Then for some reason, after me swapping the actual pad with another palm rest assembly coming from a dead T41p, that problem never happens again for both of them! So I gue...

Re: Custom CPU instead of t50 motherboard possible?

The components that were used to create the T50 board are stock, off-the-shelf parts, like the i5 processor, the chipset. the CPU socket etc. Of course HOPE and his team needed to design and build a circuit board to put them all together, but that's peanuts compared to what's required to roll out y...

Re: Custom CPU instead of t50 motherboard possible?

It's impossible unless you can design and manufacture your own processors. Between the Pentium M and the Core i series is a major difference in CPU design that cannot be surmounted. Heck, no one has even succeeded in upgrading a laptop from a Pentium M to a Core Duo. yea HOPE from 51nb.com designed...

Re: Custom CPU instead of t50 motherboard possible?

Not to mention that the CPU is intimately intertwined with the chipset. If you could somehow pack all the new CPU technology into the same socket/form factor, you would still not be able to talk to the old chipset through its ancient interfaces. And if you could, it would tremendously bottleneck th...

Custom CPU instead of t50 motherboard possible?

if with the 479 socket there was a new 14nm CPU with latest instruction sets SSE4.2 AVX AVX2 etc. and integrated GPU wouldn't that be a great way to upgrade the laptop? i wonder if someone like HOPE from 51nb.com can make a custom 14nm CPU with 479 socket which fits existing t4x motherboards instead...

while purchasing a laptop from EBAY i was on lenovo parts lookup site searching for LCD panel type for 2325-4Z1 it shows both TN and IPS panels. How can one REMOTELY determine whether the specific laptop has an IPS panel or not? is the serial number required?
