Re: Which ThinkPad gen suits best for Net/Free/OpenBSD?

Thanks! I saw the link for downloads, I was only curious which would be the easiest hardware platform.

Top performance is not relevant for the moment, is just for toying around.

For Free/OpenBSD roughly anything that has an ipw2200 intel wifi onward till machines 2 or 3 years old.
That new? I may give it a try in a T420/T420s probably... I was expecting it would be safer on older hardware and was cleaning up my xx00 gen machines...

Thanks for the hint! :thumbs-UP:

Which ThinkPad gen suits best for Net/Free/OpenBSD?

As the title says... I got curious about the above mentioned OS's and was wondering which ThinkPad generation would be good to start playing with them? I was guessing some older Core2Duo or 1 Core i gen would suits best. To start with I'd like to use hardware that is soported ootb and if I like it, ...

I forgot to add that I always use the net install, it's a tiny image that downloads all packages from the net, so once the install is ready you have up to date system and don't need to run any additional package...

Sorry, I forgot to specify that you should look for the original panel, not the cable... :|

Sorry for that...

You could also check some overseas eBay sellers, you may get better prices there but the shipping will take longer.

Re: Looking for a devil's advocate: why SHOULDN'T I move to Linux completely ?

I use Debian in many of my ThinkPads and I never had any issue. Coincidentally, I installed LXDE not so long ago on an old X41 with an IDE SSD and I was positively surprised how well it worked (same on an old Toughbook of similar age that I later gave away). Playing devil's advocate  , my m...

I see that the W510 and W520 seem to have different palmrest parts, but I was wondering if anyone has actually tried putting a W510 palmrest on a W520 I tried that ages ago and it did not work, if I remember correctly is because the mg frames are slightly different. I took some pictures at that tim...

No. The 2012 X1C is the first X1C. The 2013 is the 2nd gen with the nasty keyboard and clickpad and touchbar.

price is firm at $280 CDN (213 USD, 182 EUR) Translated into Swiss francs that's an excellent price! I don't know how is it in Canada, but here 2nd hand X1 Carbon's are rare to find for a price like that. I have one with 8GB, 256GB SSD and a modded FHD panel. Re: Mixing and matching X220 and X230 parts... Anyone with any experience on it?

If I use the bottom housing and motherboard from the X230, but the keyboard and palmrest from the X220, that should work, based on all the info I can find. Yes it will work, but you need to mod the BIOS to get the 7row KB working fine, more info in this thread: click me! A FHD screen mod seems very...

You just need to open the file "Xorg.0.log" file, which is located in the directory "/var/log/", use the file manager that is available by default in your distro

Normally I open the /var/log/Xorg.0.log file and look for a string called "EDID", most of the times (at least in my ThinkPads) the panel model is listed there.

Re: T530 vs T550?

+1 for the T550, it has a more modern architecture, options to 3K screens and can take max 2x 16GB RAM vs 2x 8GB RAM of the T530. Though the latter has the advantage that you can mod the BIOS and install a 7-row keyboard from the xx20 generation.

Yes, you can. I did it in one of my ThinkPads (I think in a W520, cannot remember 100%). It's a plug & play replacement.

Re: Installing classic keyboard into X230 with EC firmware mod

The pin taping is to prevent some burn marks on the KB when used in a X220. Is not bad if you tape them, but you spare some work if you don't have a X230

But as you said, now you can swap KB back and forth, I also normally tape mines, even when modding them for non X230 models...

You don't need to tape the pins for the T430, only the X230 needs that (IIRC)

This reminds me of my own T30 I used from 2003 till 2005 on my former employer. It was a tank that survived lots of traveling without any failure. Even the (in)famous RAM slot issue was not present in my device. Unfortunately at that time I was not a deep ThinkPad fan, so later I gave this T30 to my...

My T430s has 2x 8GB Corsair Vengeance modules but is an Intel only Mobo. My screen is not blinking though as said above, I only tested it with a Live Linux Distro instead of an installed OS.
