Re: R51e CPU upgrade
Thanks for your quick reply, George. Is any hack out there how to make the FlexView screen run on ATI Radeon 200M-based R51e board? As I understood by searching this forum, this might be some firmware/BIOS limitation only. Even the Radeon driver for T43p (FireGL V3200) is exactly the same installati...

Re: R51e CPU upgrade
New donor has arrived on my shelf - very hybrid ThinkPad IMO: - 15" version in a good shape, LCD label says T42p, but: - Motherboard is T43 with an ATI X300 GPU - LCD is not UXGA typical for 15" T42p/T43p units, but SXGA+ and definitely is a FlexView screen - CPU is 2.13GHz Dothan but heatsink/coole...

Re: R51e CPU upgrade
Thanks dr_st, yes, I know about that design flaw in T43/R52/X41 series which are using Marvell SATA/ATA converter chip, but was not sure about R51e. Now it's clear for me, thanks. I also plan to do a further upgrades of this nice ThinkPad (I really love the TrackPoint-only palmrest it has by the way...

Re: R51e CPU upgrade
Thanks, I'll give it a try. Just a side note: R51e, although being a 533MHz FSB Centrino ThinkPad, is not suffering from HDD error 2010 when using non-IBM's hard drive, is it?

R51e CPU upgrade
Hi guys, recently, I have acquired really nice, near mint R51e - no scratches, no shines on the keyboard etc. It runs pretty nice with Alpine Linux and I found it only has a Celeron CPU which of course lacks SpeedStep, has a half of L2 cache compared to the proper Pentium etc. Now I have the opportu...

T420 and i7-4610M?
Hello,
I own a T420 ThinkPad and I have recently got a CPU which has P/N on it: SR1KY. Per Google, this seems to be 4th generation of i7 (4610M). The question is if I can use it in my ThinkPad T420 to get some performance boost? Currently, the laptop has a Sandybridge CPU inside.
Thank you.

R52 Intel motherboard and power-on through LAN?
Good day! I have an R52-mobo-based T41 laptop at home and I would like to use it as a server providing multiple services like OpenVPN to connect from outside to my home, DLNA server for my TV providing storage for my films etc. and I would like to ask, whether the motherboard supports power-on over ...

Re: T400 --> T420 Upgrade
T420 came home today. I finally picked the LG cells-based battery which has 120 cycles and Fedora Linux informs 5-6 hours remaining at full charge. The body is very nice, KB has no shining. I was shocked that the laptop took my Intel SSD with Fedora Linux on it (was installed on my previous T400) an...

Re: T400 --> T420 Upgrade
I have done the physical review of that ThinkPad, the seller has many of them. Few of them are in mint condition, one is excellent so I have selected it - it has German keyboard layout but it's not a big issue for me and the keyboard has absolutely no shining on the keys, the laptop probably was mos...

Re: T400 --> T420 Upgrade
T420's configuration is Intel i5 2520M 2.4 GHz, 8 GB DDR3 RAM, 1000 GB HDD (I will probably put there my SSD from T400), LCD 14" (1366x768), DVDRW, WiFi, battery lasts approximately 4 hours. In my current T400 I've standard LCD resolution 1280x800 so the given one is not a big issue for me since e.g...

T400 --> T420 Upgrade
Hi there! I got an opportunity to do the T400 --> T420 upgrade. The configuration of T420 is i5-2520M, Intel GPU, 8GB RAM, no HDD (I have an SSD), DVD-RW, LCD is 1366x768 and the battery lasts around 4 hours. I am Fedora Linux user, so I don't care a much about performance - current T400 runs GNOME ...

WinXP activation fails & some OS/2 findings
After playing a bit with OS/2 Warp during few previous days, I have decided to switch to Windows XP recently. Few things I don't like on OS/2 Warp: - Very slow boot - the T43 boots OS/2 very slowly, splash screen is on for few minutes until it reaches desktop - Unstable - putting a new driver caused...

Re: OS/2 Warp 4.52 on a ThinkPad T43 / T43p
I finally made the installation finished - the problem with formatting was caused by large partition (over 64GB) I used before. Now I am using 60GB partition and it formats well. After the first restart, I am getting the same error as micrex was getting (that one with COM.SYS), after hitting Enter, ...

Re: OS/2 Warp 4.52 on a ThinkPad T43 / T43p
I have been trying 4.52.14.086_W4 yesterday. The first CD disk created LVM and requested me to restart the ThinkPad. After the restart, installation program started and I went through few of the screens to the format window where I have selected 'Complete format' (sector by sector), but when the for...

Re: OS/2 Warp 4.52 on a ThinkPad T43 / T43p
Hello, I have got a T43p (with T43 ATI X300 GPU) and UXGA FlexView LCD. It is very late T43(p) with only Lenovo logos on it. Is it possible to run OS/2 on it? How fast is the OS/2 performing on this laptop? I have an experience with multiple Linux distributions on it but all seem to me a bit slow. N...

Re: Would you buy a T43 today?
I have one of the last T43(p)s ever made (ThinkPad T-series sticker on the palmrest and Lenovo sticker under LCD) and it is still my favorite companion. I am running Debian on it and the work is still very comfortable - only trouble I have is, that it generates high pitch noise when running on AC so...

Re: New project: ThinkPad T40 mobo to work with 533MHz Dothan CPUs?
For the operating system I'd recommend a stripped down Windows 7 with ati display driver version 6.14.10.6606. I've tried many light weight Linux distros on T40 and many of them do beat Windows in boot times but once the system is up and running it's surprisingly almost always been Win7 which offer...

Re: Upgraded T40 to SXGA, now have LCD earthquakes!
The problem is definitely not caused by the interferences from the inverter board. Running the ThinkPad with disconnected inverter and using the table lamp, I still can see the stuttering is still there.

Re: Upgraded T40 to SXGA, now have LCD earthquakes!
Inverter board is getting warm to hot (depends how long the ThinkPad is turned on). I have now put the LCD into lid assembly and using the left hole in the inverter board I tightened the inverter board to the lid. As there is contact on the board, I was assuming the connection between the inverter b...

Re: Upgraded T40 to SXGA, now have LCD earthquakes!
Can be the stuttering somehow caused by exposed inverter? I am not running the LCD with cover attached, only LCD on hinges, inverter connected to cabling etc. (I did not want to assembly it without initial testing).

Apologizing for opening old topic, but I am experiencing the same issue. After upgrading to SXGA+ screen in my T40 project, screen is shaking. I took a picture of that behavior: http://1drv.ms/1UnwsuI When reseating old XGA LCD back, everything works fine. I am sure the screen has been working befor...

Re: New project: ThinkPad T40 mobo to work with 533MHz Dothan CPUs?
Why are the high-end Pentium Ms so expensive? Looking at feebay, ie: Pentium M 765 (top processor for T40 - T42 series with Dothan core and 400MHz bus) is 4 times more expensive than Pentium M 755 (2GHz vs 2.1GHz). The same is for Pentium M 770 vs. 780 (2.13GHz vs 2.26GHz). For my T40 project, I cur...

Re: T43p experiments and analysis *pictures*
I am running similar configuration with my T43p, however with T43 ATI X300 board. I have noticed that the rubber pad, which is at the top of heatsink (thermal conductor from heatsink to the keyboard's sheet metal) is very helpful and I would say that it may significantly improve CPU and GPU cooling ...

New project: ThinkPad T40 mobo to work with 533MHz Dothan CPUs?
I'm curious if T40's mobo (designed primarily for 400MHz FSB Dothans and Banias') will work with 533MHz Dothan CPU? I do remember times of my former Dell Latitude D600 which has had almost same HW as T40, that 533MHz Dothan CPU worked well there, even underperforming on 400MHz FSB. Is it going to wo...
