Re: Lenovo reportedly caught installing spyware again...this time on ThinkPads

Nothing to do with the bios, your clearly confused over the latest missteps by lenovo. Although not as serious as Superfish and the misuse of the MS BIOS security feature, it begs the question that Lenovo don't get privacy. Would i buy one in the future, probably but i usually install Linux so most...

EDIT: Sounds like I should have read more carefully; thanks to those below for clearing this up. I'll leave the original post content below for posterity. http://gadgets.ndtv.com/laptops/news/lenovo-in-the-news-again-for-installing-spyware-on-its-machines-743952 According to the above, Lenovo is at ...

Re: Any EliteBook love here?

As my signature indicates, count me in as an EliteBook fan--I have the 8460w workstation variant of the original poster's machine, which gave access to higher-spec quadcore i7 processors and a FirePro graphics card (the latter being the draw for me, as I was at the time doing considerable CAD modeli...

I'm not sure that's a middle scroll button - on the Dells that I support, the one for the pointing stick is for scrolling, the one for the trackpad is for middle-clicking, and you use two-finger scrolling (like a Mac) on the trackpad. I can't speak to the software for the Dells, but the Synaptics h...

To be fair, I'm surprised there's an ExpressCard at all. And, if you have to avoid downtime that much, that's why you pay for NBD on-site service, and possibly keep loaner devices around. (Or, if you're a big enough customer, you pay for a dedicated on-site tech - my day job is being a dedicated on...

Most of the workstation class machines are purchased by large enterprises, and they don't really need the upgradability. They do however need reliability and dependability, since many of the workstations are used in harsh environments such as hot desert, freezing tundra and on oil rigs or explorati...

The P50 doesn't need to be thick, it has two separate cooling fan, which will help to dissipate the heat faster than a single fan system. Also, If Lenovo ever releases something like T440p and call it a P40, then it will be interesting. Granted, it's possible that the P50 has adequate cooling--but ...

Consider the success of machines like the MacBook Pro Retina 15-inch, though. While it's not ISV-certified, it's fairly similar hardware to a 15" workstation-class machine (contemporaries to the first generation (Mid 2012) were the W530, Precision M4700, and EliteBook 8570w). And, I mean, the Preci...

On a positive note, it's nice to see traditional hinges and the new processors--good stuff. No doubt that for those who need it, ECC RAM can be a deal-maker on its own. A 10-key makes sense on anything as wide as a 16x9 15" machine, and can be very useful for data entry. That said, I'm puzzled as to...

Re: RetroThinkPad survey #4 of 4 *** FINAL SURVEY **

Strange. Given that W7 is still the absolute standard in the corporate world and offered on many business-oriented machines, it's hard to believe there's really enough willpower to try to drown that out/pretend otherwise. That said, I'm confident we'll see a BIG push to get people on W10, both in co...

The early PowerBook G4 Titanium had a VGA port until the 867MHz model introduced a DVI-I port, which was there until the Unibody MacBook Pros - a brief period of sweet compatibility. Ahh, I can't believe I'd forgotten about the early TiBooks--had a 667mhz model for a short time. Pity they've thrown...

The first machine in the house that I got extended time on was a Macintosh IIsi, with a 30MHz 68030, 12MB of RAM, and a 40MB SCSI hard drive, along with the matching ~12" color Apple CRT (I believe a rebadged Sony). Rather nice little machine, and it had a WONDERFUL keyboard. I really should have ke...

Re: Any new Thinkpad with digitizer stylus support?

The Fujitsu T935 is a convertible like the old-style X-series Tablet that has an active digitizer. The previous iteration definitely had a Wacom digitizer; I'm pretty sure the current one does as well. 13.3" FHD IPS display. I don't like it is as well as an old SXGA+ X61 tablet, but I'd take it over...

Did the fruity company ever use VGA ports? I've never seen a laptop from them with one. Yep, way back when...the "Lombard" and "Pismo" G3-based PowerBooks did. Quite unlike the G4 models that followed, they had an impressive modular design too, with socketed processors (allowing a 3rd party upgrade...

I voted for the last one as well, I think it is a classy mix with a logical separation of colors. I'm going to restate again that I think "Retro" was a terrible choice of words. Survey 4 is not a deal breaker or maker. I think survey 2 and 3 were more important in term of the what to expect. What we can conclude is that nothing is set: could go either: -14" T4xx p , big and powerful machine, or -14" version of X301, ligther and not as powerful. David could have asked about...

Someone on the NBR put in a 45W SB i7 in the T420. They ended up with an oven. A very fast one, but not capable of really long runs. For a couple of generations HP had a far better cooling practices than ThinkPads IMO. ---- Here's the problem: it's Lenovo - not me - who came up with a 13.3"/14" for...

When I started buying laptops in the early 2000s, I was willing to spend well over $1,000 on a laptop, despite being a grad student on a meager stipend. My first laptop, bought in 2002, was a $1,760 Dell Inspiron 8200. I would buy several more $1K+ laptops later in that decade. Now I have more mone...

Please educate me with a real-world example. Some of the proprietary industry-related-software that I happen to run on occasion will shut down just about any laptop, short of possibly a Clevo with a desktop CPU. Don't presume that you know how I - or for that fact anyone else - uses their system, o...

By the _20 generation, QC and materials had taken a considerable plunge from years past. It's pretty sad to compare the bui...

I have a middle-aged EliteBook, albeit one that did not offer an IPS display option (sadly), and can support the other general claims about the high-end HPs: the keyboards, for what they are, are quite decent. True, although I don't recall the sound being good on my T6x machines. Then again, maybe that's just the implementation of the speakers, and not the mounting position. Yeah, my 14" T60 and T60p didn't have especially good sound, to be sure. But I'd blame the hardware, not the positioning. I had an ...
