I connect the T420 kit today with this screeh: https://www.ebay.com/itm/-3/182340411925
The display is totally garbled.
Machine uses coreboot for its bios.

Anyone try this kit with coreboot or can suggest a way to debug this?

Re: Has anyone succeeded at swapping cpus on X6x boards?

The L2500 is faster than the L7400 and works with libreboot. It requires a 32-bit OS. Another option is to use a faster machine. I have some modified quad core T400 with open source Coreboot for sale -- you could easily put libreboot on them. Or, you could try an x200s, or x200. They're both much fa...

With a decent IPS screen and a small msata disk they are fine machines for day travel. I prefer the i5 models over the i7 as the fan doesn't turn on as often.

If you can get by with 768 vertical pixels...

Re: WTB: BIOS locked T60

If your intent is to flash the board with Libreboot, you (likely) need a board with Intel graphics. Flashing to a motherboard with ATI graphics is not at all simple.

The cost of shipping will outweigh the cost of the motherboard. Consider searching ebay.co.uk for 't60 motherboard'.

often there is a kernel parameter which can solve this sort of graphics problem. Or, you boot into run level 3.
vga=normal
fb=off
are a few which may work. Search around for other boot parameters.

What's are the required screen specs?

I've been using my coreboot T420 with quad core Ivy Bridge processor but the screen makes the machine difficult to use. If this works, I could use a few of these kits.

The Intel 2100 is only an 'B' card. If you PM me your address I can send you a better card, either an Intel 2200BG or something similar. You may need to flash bios to use it though.

There are motherboards which fit into the x201 which has 7th, or 8th, generation intel processors (i7-7500U Core i5-8250U, or Core i7-8550U). This modified x201 is usually called an x210.

Samsung is the comsumer-ssd leader. Check out their 860 EVO 1TB.

Before buying larger drives, I first spend a few minutes trying to clean up my disk - deleting crap, shrinking images, moving archived stuff to an archive disk.

Re: 72% Battery Wasn't Charging. Now Won't Power On

If it blinks fast and orange, it's toast -- the cells inside the battery are possibly fine, and can be removed and used in other projects. There is a circuit inside the plastic casing which decides the battery should disable itself and there isn't much you can do.

If you have coreboot , the machine will run with the 3840QM. But, I'm not sure if it will overheat. My 3630QM does not overheat but it may throttle, cpu temps reach 90C under extended load, >20minutes.

Re: Help! The frequencies cpu do not change when the charge is connected.

Some users see cpu throttling when their power brick is bad, or under powered. Is it a 65W or 90W? Better is 90W.

What happens on the charger and battery removed?

I'm using 'powersave' and, with a 4 threads under load, get 3099 MHz:
- with battery
- with charger
- with battery + charger

Re: Suitable replacement for T420

There are a few heat sinks for the T420. The dual-pipe models runs much cooler than the single-pipe models under 100% cpu load. Remove your keyboard and see if you have one heat-pipe or two. The T420 can be modified to accept an Ivy Bridge (3rd generation, i7-3xxxQM) quad-core cpu; you replace the s...

There is a quad core mod for the t400 which is pretty simple if you already have coreboot on the machine. I may have an extra processor if you're interested.

If someone wants to hack into your machine and has physical access to the machine, you are going to get hacked. Likewise if they have access to your wifi router. Approach the problem like a parent, and not like a system administrator.

On my daily driver my root partition uses 4.2 gb. You can run some systems, like Debian and Arch, on a 4gb disk. Install a 'minimum', or 'bare', or 'core', system and then add only the packages you need. For Debian systems this could mean using the --no-install-recommends switch: apg-get --no-instal...
