Re: 72% Battery Wasn't Charging. Now Won't Power On

Maybe one could replace the board inside the battery with a generic 'battery charging' board.

Samsung is the comsumer-ssd leader. Check out their 860 EVO 1TB.

Before buying larger drives, I first spend a few minutes trying to clean up my disk - deleting crap, shrinking images, moving archived stuff to an archive disk.

Re: 72% Battery Wasn't Charging. Now Won't Power On

If it blinks fast and orange, it's toast -- the cells inside the battery are possibly fine, and can be removed and used in other projects. There is a circuit inside the plastic casing which decides the battery should disable itself and there isn't much you can do.

Re: Thinkpad T420 and I7 3840QM

If you have coreboot , the machine will run with the 3840QM. But, I'm not sure if it will overheat. My 3630QM does not overheat but it may throttle, cpu temps reach 90C under extended load, >20minutes.

Re: Help! The frequencies cpu do not change when the charge is connected.

Some users see cpu throttling when their power brick is bad, or under powered. Is it a 65W or 90W? Better is 90W.

What happens on the charger and battery removed?

I'm using 'powersave' and, with a 4 threads under load, get 3099 MHz:
- with battery
- with charger
- with battery + charger

Re: Suitable replacement for T420

There are a few heat sinks for the T420. The dual-pipe models runs much cooler than the single-pipe models under 100% cpu load. Remove your keyboard and see if you have one heat-pipe or two. The T420 can be modified to accept an Ivy Bridge (3rd generation, i7-3xxxQM) quad-core cpu; you replace the s...

There is a quad core mod for the t400 which is pretty simple if you already have coreboot on the machine. I may have an extra processor if you're interested.

If someone wants to hack into your machine and has physical access to the machine, you are going to get hacked. Likewise if they have access to your wifi router. Approach the problem like a parent, and not like a system administrator.

On my daily driver my root partition uses 4.2 gb. You can run some systems, like Debian and Arch, on a 4gb disk. Install a 'minimum', or 'bare', or 'core', system and then add only the packages you need. For Debian systems this could mean using the --no-install-recommends switch: apg-get --no-instal...

A firewall on the computrace-infected machine is useless. Low-level spyware, like CT, does not need the OS to communicate over the internet. A firewall placed between the infectred machine and the internet could stop CT's communication, incomming and outgoing, but you would need to know what you're ...

Re: SSD in an X60s - which model will work ?

The intel 330 is six years old. Newer models (520, 530, 535) draw less electricity and have lower latencies. Another way to speed up 'hard drive' performance is to use the hard drive less. Lower the number of disk operations either by off-loading the operations to ram, for example with a ram disk, o...

Re: T420 Running Hot?

You've already gotten the correct screw drivers. But, it's worth mentioning: the key to screw drivers is to have one which fits the screw. If the fit isn't snug, wait to get the correct screw driver. Your probability of stripping a screw is 40x higher if you're using the wrong screw driver -- and st...

The T420s is easier to carry around and thinner. That said, it gets hotter and the fan runs more often. The stock screens of some T420s are terrible. Color calibration helps but you should plan to get a new screen. I don't typically take the T420 or T420s out of the house. The only exception is when...

I tried making the same jump - from the x6xs to an x301. Other options I tried included: x62, x200, x200s, x201, x201s, x220, T420s. The size and weight of the x301 is great. As is the construction. Keyboard has about the same spacing as the x61 - kb on my x301 is a bit too stiff for me. I don't hav...
