The FRU 04W0627 was not able to cool an i7-3610QM. The machine quickly overheated under load.
FRU 04W0407 is able to cool the i7-3610QM -- max observed temperatures, 81C.

Re: Tell me about your T420 cooling fan!

I've been using a single-pipe T420 all week and, usually, can't hear, or feel, the fan. For what it's worth, I tried the single-pipe heat-sink with an i7-3610QM. At 100% cpu usage the machine overheated and shutdown within 10 seconds. I immediately turned the machine back on and ordered a dual-pipe ...

Re: Tell me about your T420 cooling fan!

there must be a Linux alternative. apt-get install thinkfan lm-sensors vim /etc/thinkfan.conf for a T420, you must tell it where the get sensors data...i.e. include this line in the config file: hwmon /sys/devices/platform/coretemp.0/hwmon/hwmon2/temp3_input add a line to thinkpad_acpi.conf echo 'o...

I took the T420 back apart and mystery solved; I have the 04W0627 single-pipe heatsink.
The double-pipe versions outperform the single-pipe models. There's currently $5/piece on ebay.

Sold: T420 MB 63Y1989 w/ Coreboot -- accepts Ivy Bridge CPU

This is a nice upgrade for anyone with a T420. It's a standard motherboard whose bios has been replace with 'Coreboot', an open source bios. With this motherboard you can upgrade your T420's cpu from Sandy Bridge to Ivy Bridge. The benefit is 25% better graphics performance and better processing per...

Re: X201s constantly overheating

This [overheating] has been happening on every Thinkpad I've run Linux on, going back to the X32, X60, X200s and my current X201s, with 'buntu versions 12.04, 14.04 and now 16.04. If you had heating problems with the x200s and Xubuntu 14.04 and 16.06, something is physically wrong with the machine(...

Yes.

Performance feels to be between a T410i i3-370m and a T420 i5-2520m, closer to the T420.

Bare board, no fan. I accidentally ordered this board on ebay.

The board has stock bios, I'd be happy to flash libreboot onto the board at no charge.

More CPU power won't be found in the Core 2 Duo lineup, you'd need a new laptop. I've been using the Q9100, $22 and free shipping on ebay. It's a huge upgrade over the P8400. I'm in the middle of preparing some machines with this upgrade and will post them in the marketplace in day or two. Going fr...

Re: My Thinkpad x61 is too hot ? please help

The half-sized 6205 is the best for low-heat. The 6300 is hotter. Also, the Atheros AR9280 is cool. Next you will need to lower Tx power on the card, and enable powersaving mode on the wifi card. The hotness is not entirely from the wifi card. On my x60/x61 I also put 4 pieces of paper and a 2mm pie...

Other option is get T530 and get ivy bridge quad with 8MB cache (specifically 45W type)
You could probably put an ivy bridge in the T520. For what it's worth, my T420 has zero problems with over heating -- the hottest it gets is 71C.

Display type - CCFL vs. LED - has no bearing on motherboard compatibility when it comes to these systems. Doesn't the CCFL display require an inverter card which is part of the motherboard? Fitting the metal bar is a good case of "a picture's worth a thousand words". Search youtube for a video showing how to repair the keyboard, i.e. where the metal bar goes.
It's a very useful trick to know (same bar is hidden under the enter key, the shift key, and perhaps even the caps lock key).

The T400 is the last thinkpad with a serial port -- but there's a hitch. The port isn't exposed, which is to say there is no physical port on the notebook. You need a 2504 docking station.
