Check the official HMM manual provided in the HMM archive of this website. That thing is more detailed. Also you are talking about the short fan, right?
Stay on track. He is not talking about a fan. He was asking whether anyone is able to help him fix his computer, if he should need help.

OK ... thanks RealBlackStuff and dr_st for the information. I will try removing the DVD burner first. I do have a spare burner put away that I bought new maybe six years ago. Hope that will be the solution ... I will just remove the old burner and see if the computer starts correctly and then insta...

Your router is 802.11b. That's out of date. It's like using a computer with windows 98.

Replace is with 802.11n.

If you persue this, I'd be very interested to know the result (and read the how-to).
I have a few 'dead' (firmware inflicted) original 4-cell packs hopeful they'll be revived.

I switched recently from x220 to x230 (I bought a completely new one, was forgotten in a company's stock!). I'm missing nothing from my x220 but the keyboard. I'm finally considering the keyboard mod, however I need to get a new US keyboard as the one from my x220 is a bit consumed. I know that the...

When you swapped the motherboard, did you also mount the heatsink?
Did you put some thermal paste on the cpu before mounting the heatsink?

A common debugging is to disconnect all periferal devices, dvd, wifi, hdd, one stick of ram, and try booting/installing/etc.

Are you sure it's not thermal shutdown?

To be sure, I would run a cpu intensive process (use all cores) and monitor temperature:

Here is a one-liner (requires lm-sensors)

Code: Select all

~$ while sleep 0.5;do sensors | grep "temp1:" ;done

You can test distros using Virtualbox. Also, once you have linux installed, you can test with
"grub-imageboot - boot iso, harddisk and floppy images with grub2 and syslinux memdisk"

Having said that, Mint is a popular choice. It is a modified version of Debian. I run Debian on my T60.

Of course USB 1.1 severely limits wifi performance-- its bandwidth is 12 megabits per second-- for comparison, Wifi-G is 54 megabts per second. 'Of course' is inaccurate. The machine COULD have an internal limit of 10 megabits per second and the USB 1.1 limit wouldn't limit anything. But, it doesn'...

A power flicker could turn the machine on if bios is set to 'wake on power' (I'm not sure what the exact wording is, or whether it's included on the w530).
