Re: First time SSD install in T61p - system hangs or is slow

I use the Corsair 'FORCE' SSDs in my T60/T61 thinkpads. They work without a problem, even before Windows Update. If you do get a lemon; Corsair will replace it under warranty without issue.

Intel always makes terrible memory controllers and terrible memory storage.

Re: Breaking (?) news/rumor: Thinkpad W1!

I analyzed the photo for fun, and it's fake: #1 the sides of the lid are *too thin* (it's not possible to manufacture that, and if it was, it would be VERY fragile #2 the right side of the lid is thinner than the left side #3 the keyboard isn't getting the associated light reflected on the keyboard ...

Re: Hello everyone! (Intro and new T43 pics!)

Haha, yeah the T430s are not the most robust things.
For starters they lack a latch (you know, so they are 'sleek') keyboards are terrible, and pretty much what you described. I do like the T440s though.

Definitely a nice T43.

Re: ThinkPad 701c 133MHz AMD - Broken GPU?

The original motherboards only supported up to 48MB, I think. But the upgraded 133MHz boards definitely support 64MB , provided you use a specifically compatible 64MB chip. The 133 Mhz upgrade is still an aftermarket modification so the hardware is still technically not designed for it; and there's...

Re: Just added a 701c to my collection

IBM only ever manufactured two boards: #1 50 Mhz (with two onboard memory modules) and #2 75 Mhz (with four onboard memory modules).

Anything else beyond 75Mhz would have been a custom modification.

Close the laptop, rub the lid three times (careful that your hand doesn't get stuck from the sticky rubber coating), and wish for the modem drivers to be installed. Kidding, of course. Did you try installing the 'faxworks' program? Driver package here: http://ibmfiles.com/ibmfiles/701c/701_resources...

Re: ThinkPad 701c 133MHz AMD - Broken GPU?

Maybe this has nothing to do with the board, but rather the 64MB memory module. This translates into: If you upgrade to a 64MB module, the onboard RAM is disabeled. Another graphic driver is then used, which only gives 4 colors. Is the onboard memory shared for graphics, so that the disabling of th...

Re: Will these replacement TrackPoint caps work with the 701

I was actually just discussing this on this thread here: http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=115327 For starters those are knockoff non-genuine trackpoint caps; which are quite terrible to use. And they're for the second revision trackpoint stem. You'll want to purchase first revision tra...

Re: When did you first start using the trackpoint and why?

I first started using the trackpoint a few years ago when I discovered it on my first thinkpad: a T60. I use it since you can constantly input input without moving your finger back and fourth, and since you don't have to move your hands off the keyboard like with a touchpad. Another benefit is no t...

When did you first start using the trackpoint and why?

Curious when others started using the trackpoint-- and why ? It has a rather higher learning curve and is something that staunch touchpad users vehemently scorn-- and even to the point of ridicule. I wanted a thinkpad and knew nothing about what I was getting (so I wasn't expecting a "trackpoint" am...

I too have never understood why ajkula66 dislikes Dell's trackpoint so much. My first laptop was a Dell Inspiron 8200 with both a trackpoint and a touchpad. I tried both input devices and found the trackpoint much easier to use. Just a month later, I bought a Thinkpad 600E which of course was track...

Re: Switchable parts t60 - t61 - t61p

Is there a particular reason you want to buy a T61, which is only slightly more modern than your T60? I wouldn't call the ability to run a 64bit OS taking full advantage of 2x2=4GB or even 2x4=8GB RAM without being hardware limited by the chipset "slightly more modern". This is in fact a major adva...

A black 240 would probably be a nice match, otherwise I find those models too "boxy". Once upon a time I was living in Canada, and had a near-indestructible Volvo P544, 4-speed manual, B16 engine. Mine was imported from Sweden, before Canada started building them. With about 150.000 miles on the cl...

Okay so I just swapped in a T500 on my T60p. The temperatures are about 10C cooler now. So GPU will hit 60C max instead of 70C on load. My CPU is around 35C on idle. To install it you have to stick a northbridge thermal pillow on the northbridge part (but the GPU will hit the copper directly), it do...

Hopefully it doesn't have a SuperVisor password set.

If so-- your only option is to replace the motherboard or the alternative method which we do not discuss here (it would be too advanced for most people anyways as it involves soldering).

People use it when they need to type a bunch of capital letters in a row. That's what I figured-but you'd have to be pretty adaptive to do it, and be pretty quick about it. It'd have to be integrated into your method of touch-typing... and regardless of the task(programming, data recording) it's qu...

There are a couple more under sold listings. But yours can boot, which is a great thing to know. One pesky problem a ThinkPadder can diagnose. Aye well good luck if you do sell it. Re: New ThinkPad Keyboards from a Blind User's Perspective

Just for a quick dip in history: IBM introduced the function keys on the first IBM PC the 5150. And later expanded it to F12 on the Model M in 1985; which is where the standard ANSI 101 layout is derived from. This is also why keyboards have the 'system request' function still, which is a vestigial ...

How do you position your hand on the TrackPoint?

I was curious how other individuals besides myself position their hand on the TrackPoint.

For me my thumb goes on the very right edge of the left button, my middle finger goes on 'U', ring finger on 'I', and pinkie on 'L' (but sometimes 'O' as well).

Was the thinkpad sealed with one of the 'red lock' stickers? If not, it's not genuine and has been tampered with.

Older IBM devices such as the Model M13, older thinkpads, and the workpad Z50 all use a smaller perfectly 'square' stem. Later trackpoints use a larger square with some protruding pokers. Interesting...

I had a T40 that did the same thing (black screen, no LCD display, didn't wish to progress very far etc). Sometimes it would intermittently boot up and get to windows and display output. But it was very rare. I baked the board to no avail. Eventually binned it.
