Is this problem with Windows XP real?
I was at a computer club meeting yesterday and there was one discussion about how Windows creates many files that over a relatvely short time significantly degrade the system's performance. One person there, taken by most present as being something of an expert, said yes it is a problem and that the...

Boot password lost.
Someone here has somehow set a boot password for his R40 and doesn't know what it is. Does he have any options other than parting it out?

You would probably do just as well with AVG free (antivirus) and ZoneAlarm Free (firewall) as with Norton. You ought to leave them on since it would be easy to forget when you go online; then you could have troubles. If you have enough disk space and since the Lotus suite is free, give it a try. You...

It was a new drive, one in an USB external case. Using Swissknife I created a single partition the size of the whole drive and I formatted it NTFS. XP then recognized it by showing it when I opened MyComputer; it hadn't before that. Right clicking and choosing properties showed it was formated NTFS....

Acronis True Image, 2.5" hard disks and cases are pretty cheap. A clone of your hard drive can save you a lot of time and trouble.

Solved!
I found that the disk didn't show up under MyComputer except under Device Manager. There was no format command at that point. I did find a freeware program called SwissKnife that did what I needed. Only after it was formatted did it show up in MyComputer and upon right clicking was it able to be for...

Which optical drive for R40 2681 LU1?
Will all the combo and DVD writer slim drives available at retailers like Newegg.com work with my ThinkPad R40 2681 LU1? I see ones from NEC, Samsung, LG, Pioneer and Lite-on.
Thanks.
Thanks.

Have you replaced one? Looking at the maintenance manual I downloaded, it doesn't appear to be too difficult. Agree? I do have Acronis 8 for creating a disk image. But first I'd like to determine if it is a program malfunction. Replacing good parts is something my auto mechanic does; I'd rather not.

PC Doctor trouble with HD test - what does it mean?
In running PC-Doctor on my hard disk it gets to the second test, SMART Self-Test and stops at 29%. It gets no further and consequently doesn't run the last four tests. The first test, SMART Status Test, it gets to 100% with no problem.
So what does that mean about my hard disk?
Thanks.

I started PC Doctor and there may be a problem?
PC Doctor has six tests for hard drives. The first one, SMART status, worked fine. But with the second one, SMART short self-test, it stops at 29% and will go no further. That leaves that test unfinished and the next four not started. I tried it several times on fast and slow testing and get the sam...

Can I test my ThinkPad's hard drive?
Are there ways built in, or as downloadable software, that can test the hard drive in my ThinkPad R40? I'm thinking of s.m.a.r.t. particularly. Thanks.
I ask this because earlier today my drive seemed to be stuck but on reboot it is working fine. It could have been software or hardware.

Are contents of Recovery CDs the same as HPA?
I bought the Recovery CDs from IBM several months ago as a long term investment. To this point I haven't had to use them nor the hidden partition (HPA). It occurred to me that I have been operating under the assumption that the contents of the Recovery CDs and the hidden partition are the same. Is t...

Recommendations for light weight ThinkPad?
I would like to have a light weight laptop for travel. I would only use it for Internet and email (need wireless) and some word processing. It doesn't need to be very fast and I suppose I can even use some version of Windows before XP. Which models should I be looking for? Thanks.

Well I restarted it and voila! it's on my network! It also worked after a second restart. It must have been a conflict but there wasn't any messages that indicated that was the case. So now I must be using only the Windows Wireless Connection. PS: I recognized the possibility of a conflict although ...

R40 wireless problem and questions. Need help! (Conflict?)
My R40 2681-LU1 wireless connection had been working fine for months at home. Yesterday I went to another location and got onto their network albeit with a bit of difficulity. Now I (mostly) can't get on my home internet connection. I had got on once last night but not at all today. I suspect I have...

Flashing battery light?
Does a flashing battery light mean the battery is fully charged or something else? My R40 was off and plugged in when I noticed it.
As you can tell from the question I am either new to Thinkpads or forgetful. I plead guilty to both.
Thanks.

User accounts, standby (sleep) and dropping wireless
Either Lenovo or MS put an account on my Thinkpad named ASP.NET. Now, with a second account, when the screen goes to sleep I have to click on an icon of my account to awaken it. In the process my connection to the Internet is dropped. That didn't happen before that account got there. Is there a way ...

I've since found this:
<http://www.mvps.org/marksxp/WindowsXP/aspdot.php>
I did sign up for automatic updates from MS and Lenovo/IBM. Has either of them put it on your Thinkpad?
I don't know the consequences of deleting it. Any clue out there?
