Someone here has somehow set a boot password for his R40 and doesn't know what it is. Does he have any options other than parting it out?

I bought a refurb R40 2681-LU1 last year, 1/17/2005, It came with XP Pro on the hidden partition which I had to install. Its initial shipment date was 6/16/2003.

Regarding the wireless, I turned off the IBM one and the Windows one works just fine. Unknowingly I had both on for a time and it made the wireless flaky.

Today you can buy any of several Macs that will run Windows as well as a T60p and MacOSX as well as can be done.

You would probably do just as well with AVG free (antivirus) and ZoneAlarm Free (firewall) as with Norton. It was a new drive, one in an USB external case. Using Swissknife I created a single partition the size of the whole drive and I formatted it NTFS. XP then recognized it by showing it when I opened MyComputer; it hadn't before that. Right clicking and choosing properties showed it was formated NTFS....

Acronis True Image, 2.5" hard disks and cases are pretty cheap. A clone of your hard drive can save you a lot of time and trouble.

Have you replaced one? Looking at the maintenance manual I downloaded, it doesn't appear to be too difficult. Agree? I do have Acronis 8 for creating a disk image. But first I'd like to determine if it is a program malfunction. Replacing good parts is something my auto mechanic does; I'd rather not.

In running PC-Doctor on my hard disk it gets to the second test, SMART Self-Test and stops at 29%. It gets no further and consequently doesn't run the last four tests. The first test, SMART Status Test, it gets to 100% with no problem.

So what does that mean about my hard disk?

I downloaded PC Wizard 2005 and indeed it says I do have that Intel i845MP chip set. I don't feel any need to go beyond what I have now but it's good to know I can go up to 2GB.

A deal came along for 512 modules, $35 AR from MicroCenter. I bought it. Now with a total of 768MB memory my R40 2680 seems snappier.

PC2700 works with my R40 which specifies 2100. I believe the faster memory works it just functions at the slower speed.
