W510 wont's start - power on but screen blank + warranty?
Hi, I was wondering if anyone could give me some advice on a problem I'm having with my W510. It powers on in that the power button light up and so does the battery indicator. I get 3 beeps (1long, 2 short = System board failure, Video adapter problem or LCD assembly failure according to a beep code...

Re: Fingerprint reader doesnt work with Windows 8 CP? (W510)
Yes the fingerprint chip works, but thinkvantage software that controls the chip doesn't work. So what's the point? Without the software loading properly the chip is useless. I had the same problem, fingrrprints software fails to load at startup. What I did is I kept installing older versions of th...

Re: Fingerprint reader doesnt work with Windows 8 CP? (W510)
Fingerprint software doesn't work in Windows 8. After several reinstall of different builds of the software I finally got the new BSOD for Windows 8. I'll give it to them, the new BSOD isn't as menacing as the old one, it now has a smiling face on it and a mellow blue tint with some basic UI. Regar...

Re: Fingerprint reader doesnt work with Windows 8 CP? (W510)
That's how it's supposed to work. Windows only does logons; you have to install that software to make it do the other stuff (personally, I prefer not to as there's an annoying grammatical error in the message it displays, but that makes it inconsistent as to when I can and cannot log on using a fin...

Fingerprint reader doesnt work with Windows 8 CP? (W510)
Has anyone managed to get Thinkvantage Fingerprint Software working on Windows 8 Consumer Preview (on a W510)? I haven't been able to get the software to work on both a clean install and an upgrade. I've also made sure I have the most recent version, have restarted, cleaned/uninstalled previous driv...

USB 3.0 failure on W510
Basically, when I connect my USB 3.0 hard drive (enclosure) into a USB 3.0 port, I can't transfer much data without the drive dying. Anything above 100 MB (one file or multiple) and it fails. It starts off, then it just stops and the hard drive disappears from my system. I can read data just fine (u...

PLEASE DELETE
I'm very sorry but I thought it would be expensive to buy from Lenovo (based on the keyboard bezel being $30 on eBay).
Turns out its's less than $10.

Replacement Screen Bezel for W510
I am currently smiling but that won't last. Being the idiot that I sometimes am, I've managed to strip away some of the paint on my bezel. Basically, I was annoyed by the flashing hard drive light and tape looked conspicuous, so I used nail polish. It overran, despite the tape... When furniture poli...

ThinkPad Accidental Damage Protection
Must accidental damage cover be purchased within a certain timeframe? I would think yes, and various posts would suggest this, but Lenovo UK store says nothing along those lines, so i just went ahead and bought 1yr coverage (it was cheaper per year than 3 and I plan to buy a netbook soon, so won't b...

Re: ThinkPad indicator lights (HDD) flashes too often
I see. Thanks guys.
Probably the same day I bought it (last year), I put some black PVC tape on it and didn't notice it until recently, when cleaning it. I'll try nail varnish.

ThinkPad indicator lights (HDD) flashes too often
My hard drive indicator light (W510) flashes a lot (normal behaviour: http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?sitestyle=lenovo&lndocid=MIGR-74248 ), and it can be distracting if you're in a darkened room or watching video. Until recently, I had a bit of black tape over it and forgot, ...

Re: truecrypt...
I've used it as a secure partition for a a couple of years, and it works perfectly fine - like an ordinary partition. It has numerous encryption options and other settings you can tweak. It's also pretty [censored] easy to use. I use KeePass (LastPass or whatever would be the same), so a long, long ...

Re: clean windows 7 install (activation questions)
i've come across this link and seems like it will do what i need: http://forum.notebookreview.com/windows-os-software/428068-legal-windows-7-download-links-just-like-vista-before.html with the backing up of the lenovo oem licence and restoring of it. Thanks for the link. I have this problem, sort of.

Re: AC/DC Adapter (Power Pack) - Cloverleaf Power Cord Question
The bricks vary too, the US adapters have a 2-pin inlet, the UK adapters have a 3-pin inlet. The worldwide compatibility refers only to input voltage, these adapters can handle anything from 100 V to 240 V. I thought that's what you might have meant. I haven't seen any pictures of two pin/prong (C7...

Re: AC/DC Adapter (Power Pack) - Cloverleaf Power Cord Question
Go to Lenovo -> Support and at the top, pull down United Kingdom. I see AC adapters for UK and Ireland, so you should be able to get an AC adapter that uses a three-wire line cord. You live in United Kingdom, right? ... JDH Yes, UK. And thank you for your help. I should have it in a few hours, so I...

Re: AC/DC Adapter (Power Pack) - Cloverleaf Power Cord Question
A British cloverleaf cord won't be of much help when trying to use the AC adapter that comes with your notebook. The AC adapter that comes with your notebook will be a 2-pin AC adapter. You can't plug a cloverleaf (3-pin) cord into that. You could probably use a plug adapter, but i don't know wheth...

Re: AC/DC Adapter (Power Pack) - Cloverleaf Power Cord Question
First, you do not need a transformer. Thinkpad Power Bricks work from roughly 90 through 250 volts. Second, you can always by a new cloverleaf cord, but I do not bother. I just purchased the plug adapters (many years ago) and they can always go with you. ... JDH Thank you. There's no reason I can't...

AC/DC Adapter (Power Pack) - Cloverleaf Power Cord Question
EDIT: Blue text is my original post, before I did a bit more research. Please (and thank you if you're reading this) just skip and read the bit in bold black font. I just bought my first ThinkPad (first laptop) and one of the reasons I could afford a ThinkPad and a W510 at that, was the fact that it...
