Re: T420/T430 a list of interchangable parts?

Hi, T430 seems like a minor upgrade from T420, and I am wondering how many parts they can share. Specifically, I would like to know if T430 fan assembly will fit into T420. It would be nice if T420 can be upgraded by putting improved T430 parts. Thank you! I'd say, any part of the lid interchanges....

Re: When did you first start using the trackpoint and why?

The world is changing but not always for better. With phones for example, there is the false notion that a touchscreen only devices are the future. My current phone, a P870, is the only device that I've ever had without a physical keyboard and while the screen is sightly larger, I don't think it's a...

If you're going to become political about laptops you should at least get your facts checked. X300. It's large enough to work comfortably on for extended periods of time. I've had X31, X60, X61, X200 and now an X220 and I can assure you that while portability is nice, you wouldn't like a small machine like this to be your main system. For writing, doing Internet stuff and the like, an X300 i...

Re: T60 HDD to SSD: Upgrade ... Help needed

I've popped my trusty 1.8" Samsung 64GB SLC with 2.5" adapter into every machine I've owned with zero issues. The only problem I've had is with AHCI support but that was with Windows XP which requiered a floppy drive to load the driver... now that I'm using Windows 7 I just leave it enabled. It's mo...

Re: T520 upgrades?

But I think upgrading from mobile Core i5 to a dual-core i7 is a waste of money because the extra cycles and cache make no real-world difference, except in very rare processor-bound circumstances. Thing is, both the i5 and i7 mobile processors support hyper-threading (unlike all desktop i5 processo...

Awesome!

Next project: properly fitting a classic keyboard into a T430. It seats and works, but some keys are dead and some are switched. If you manage to get it working right I'll buy the machine from you. Heck, I'll could kiss you!

Re: Any T450 series rumors yet?

Indeed. I've never argued about the quality or the typing feel of the "new" keyboard myself. Different it is, horrible it's not. The layout is a whole another matter. For those of us that were unhappy with the changes made, only two routes remain: a) Accept the change - to which I say "heck, no" - ...

Re: X220 much faster than 201?

Laptops are (currently) two core all across the range so the difference within a generation isn't that much to begin with. Maybe comparing an i3 from the first generation to a i7 from the fourth would feel considerable, but i5 from the first and i5 from the second is unlikely to make much difference...

T61 survived being drowned

Yup. I had a T61p (15.4") lying around, a friend of mine left it to me since the motherboard died from the nVidia bug. I replaced the motherboard with a Penryn compatible one (with intel graphics; they are getting hard to come by it seems) and a T8300 to replace the Merom chip it had. Overall an ama...

Re: Best O/S for an X31/X32?

I think running Windows 7 on an X31 is a bad idea but you can try. I think the golden rule of keeping old hardware usable is to stick with software of the same age. I still have a copy of Photoshop 5 installed and you'd be surprised how useful it is despite its age. Software and hardware becomes old...

Don't see a reason why it shouldn't work, it's just larger.

BUT I tend to think that those Chinese adapters are of bad quality ("too cheap"). I'd be extra careful to select a good quality one as it may eventually cause data corruption and such.

No idea but new UEFI BIOSes are very bad. I have a couple of issues that they never fixed: 1) The machine doesn't remember the mSATA drive password after restart. 2) The battery can't be charged to anything but 100% unless you want to miss calibration pretty fast. And this is with T420/X220. I can o...

Re: Death of a T42 - R.I.P. (What is the most classic ThinkPad?)

For me, the Thinkpad 600 is the all time classic. It was well built and its design exuded professionalism. It was very compact and lightweight without sacrificing features or strength. The 600X in particular was a keeper. The performance was amazing for such an old machine, easily making it a decent...

Re: T440s First Impressions

I used to have an X61 and I loved it. It had a huge screen compared to the footprint. When I switched to my X200, the first thing that came to my mind was "what a waste of footprint". I took careful measurements and decided there was enough space on it to fit a 13" 15:10 ratio screen, I think the re...

This is part of the problem with many of Lenovo's choices. They seem to be about looks, rather than functionality. Assuming you're right, to get rid of the LEDs just because they do not match a new more streamlined (and let's be honest, MacBook copycat) design is putting form completely over functi...

Re: T440s First Impressions

They wanted to make the keyboard thinner, so the whole laptop could be made thinner, so they switched. Fine, no problem here. Except: why did they have to change the keyboard layout? I believe the reasoning behind making the keyboard smaller top to bottom was to allow for a larger touch pad. That's...

Yes it does. And with reason to be honest. As long as you keep the notebook as it came from the factory, if it breaks, it's their fault. But as soon as you open it, they can't be sure if you're the one who broke it. If you don't mind breaking the rules, keep the old motherboard around and swap it be...

Great Thinkpad? The 600 series were great Thinkpads. I seen one a few days ago, a 600X. The guy said he keeps it because it works no matter what. Sounds like paid advertising... they've been slowly but steadily destroying the concepts that make a notebook a Thinkpad. Maybe good quality laptop overall, but one of this days they are going to wipe out the trackpoint for example. Wait and you'll see.

Re: Upgrading T420 screen

T420 uses LED displays; it doesn't have an inverter. From what you describe, the cable got damaged. It could also be that the new screen is damaged as garbled image is a symptom.

I'd try with a new cable first.
